Confessions of My Love: Part One

I was standing in line at the cafe, admiring the back of my crush's head. That shagged brunette-haired boy, standing at the counter, just three paces away. He's always been there, in the afternoon, right after school. No doubt that the only reason I come here is that I want to stare at the back of his head, not because I want to drink coffee every day. In fact, I'm getting pretty sick of the taste by now.1

But what would happen if I did bump into him? I would simply say 'excuse me' and he would just shrug and leave. Not really the conversation that I want. 2

"Ashley, Ashley," my friend was saying in an irritated voice while snapping her finger. She was probably trying to get my attention for the last five minutes that I was staring at the boy. "Come on, what do you want to drink?"3

I snapped back into reality. "Cappucino." She took out a five dollar bill and shook her head, probably by how stupid I looked like.4

I tried not to look when Brandon ordered his decaf and sat in a red chair with his friend, Dalton. By the time that I actually paid attention at what Ashley and I were doing, she was handing a five-dollar bill at the clerk, paying for both our cappucinos.5

"Jessica, I have money for my cappucino," I said. She grinned. "My treat."6

I managed to walk to the table with my wobbly feet without running into things. I laid down my cappucino on the table and sighed.7

"This is getting pathetic. Just go up to him and ask him out to the dance." It was sometimes complicated to talk to her by how she made things sound simple. She could easily win over boys by her dazzling smile and her beautiful brown straight hair. Now that I think about it, this is the first time that I've seen what she was wearing. She had on a green hat and a nice red coat; she did always look nice on a daily basis.8

Just as I was about to reply, Brandon and Dalton slid into their coat and stood up to leave. "Jessy, I don't have the nerve to even flirt with a guy. What makes you think that I would ask a guy out?" I said, ridiculously. 9

"Like this," she said, and in an instant, I was up on my feet, my body pushed by Jessica and lurching right onto Brandon. But instead, I toppled over his friend, Dalton. My heavy weight forced him onto the ground, where I laid on top of him, feeling humiliated and blushing into a nice red rose. 10

"Eh-erm...e-e-excuse me," I stuttered. I got up and helped Dalton up. I brushed off my jeans, not that any dirt got onto it. I quickly glanced at Brandon. His lips were slightly twitching, trying to hold back a smile. I glanced away.11

"Interesting choice of entrance," muttered Dalton under his breath. I put my hand into the pocket of my beige coat and clutched tightly around an crumpled paper that I forgot was in there. 12

And then, furious as I was with Jessica, she walked over so casually that made me want to smack her. "Hello," she said and took a sip out of her cappucino, while holding my cappucino with her other hands.13

"Hello," Brandon said and smiled politely. 14

"Brandon, do you have dates for the dance?" I immediately gave a death-glare at Jessica. "Maybe you could ask Ashley out." She smirked.15

"I could, but I'm already going with my girlfriend." It felt like my heart dropped like an atomic bomb down to the pit of my stomache. My smile dropped down into a frown, even though I tried so hard to cover it. "Sorry to disappoint." I shook my head as if it wasn't my idea. I stared at the floor. 16

"Well, we should get going," I mumbled, and gave a small pointless laugh just to show how I wasn't disappointed. 17

"Yeah. We'll see you in school tomorrow," said Jessica, and hurried out the door, tugging my hand along. I looked back and saw the back of Brandon and Dalton's head, just like before, but now, it seemed all wrong.18
