A Tale of Two Monsters

This world is no longer the world that I loved. Time has changed everything. In every year that passes, I hate my existence in this damned place more and more. I lived long enough. I loved long enough. And now I’m tired.1

After tonight, may we be able to kiss again in broad daylight. After tonight, may we be able to make love again without inflicting wounds upon each other. Tonight, we will leave this world for a journey beyond. Tonight, we will be with each other, forever.2

Walter and I grew up together in a fair Scandinavian valley. It was in the Middle Ages. My father was a wheat farmer while Walter was the son of the village’s blacksmith. Life was simple back then and we spent much of our childhood in fun and laughter. We used to play in the beautiful hills that surrounded us. We would catch grasshoppers and dragonflies. We enjoyed every time we had a dip in the cold waters of the stream nearby. Those were the days.4

We were seventeen when we confessed to each other about our feelings. We loved each other. Walter had turned into a handsome young man with a lean body and a long curly hair. He helped his father in his work as a blacksmith so he got those nice built of his. There were a lot of girls crushing on him back then. I always got jealous. But I was euphoric when he chose me among those aspiring beauties. He cared for me so much. He was my life.5

The memory of our first kiss is still fresh in my mind after so long a time. There was no electricity back then but I felt like being electrified when his sweet lips touched mine. I was comforted by the warmth I felt hugging and caressing his body; the neck, the arms, the torso. I was like Aphrodite seeing Adonis for the very first time. On a cold winter night, upon the haystack in my uncle’s stable, Walter and I made love for the very first time.6

It was a secret, though, our love affair.7

The wars began. The days of peace halted and all that was ill followed. Famine and disease roamed in the villages. Kings and other royalties battled for territories and enslaved the poor people. The screams of the women and children became the music of the night.9

And not just the wars of men destroyed the many lives.10

The two groups of silent mystical creatures of our region were stirred by the battles among us. From their silence they woke up and waged war against the opposite kind. The war had begun between the vampires and the werewolves.11

It was a horrible sight seeing the two species of monsters clash in a battle. Blood would gush everywhere. The vampires fought with their swords, the werewolves with their strengths. It was a nightmare upon awakening when a village of common people became the warzone of the two beast kinds.12

Our tranquil village was never spared.13

I thought I was going to die. When the vampires and the werewolves fought in our village, we became nothing but helpless beings. Many people were slaughtered being caught in the battle of the beasts. The vampires and the werewolves never cared of the myriad casualties. It was their war. We didn’t meddle with them but we were mostly affected.15

An old vampire happened to bite me that bloody night. He seemed to have sucked much blood from my neck so I lost consciousness. When I woke up, my mortal days were over. I became one of them. I then lusted for blood.16

The worse was when I knew what happened to Walter. He was looking for me when the vampires and werewolves came. Seizing the opportunity when the monsters caused pandemonium in our village, he decided that we should elope that night. We were tired of our secret love affair. We wanted to go somewhere where we could love each other freely. 17

However, in the middle of that night’s horror, a werewolf who had just killed a vampire attacked my dear Walter. It’s good that he was trained by his father in combat so he fought the monster with all his might, a dagger as his weapon. After some minutes of defense and attack, he managed to slaughter the werewolf. Unfortunately, he was badly wounded. The werewolf’s virus immediately turned Walter into one of them.18

I became a vampire. Walter became a werewolf. Everything the was harder for both of us.19

Years passed, decades, centuries…I lost track of time. Walter and I had seen the deaths of the ones we loved while we remained in everlasting youth. We transferred from place to place to escape societal taboos. Yes, it was too difficult for me and Walter. But we helped each other to survive.21

My dear Walter protected me from daylight. He provided the blood that nourished me. Sometimes he would get blood from animals or from people (mostly criminals). But his blood was sweeter than any blood I sucked. In return, I would control him every full moon. It broke my heart every time he transformed into a werewolf for he was far from the mind of a human. I would chain him against my will and wait until he comes back to normal. I cried much. We just loved each other. We felt not deserving of such fate.22

We left Europe in the Age of Exploration. Walter and I then became Americans. Some of our kind tried to bite other people in newly discovered lands so as to make colonies of their own. But Walter and I never did such despicable things. We lived in silence. We would stay away from people as much as possible to protect our identities.23

We witnessed much of mankind’s history. We’d seen presidents die or get assassinated. We’d seen the race of skyscrapers which were aiming for the skies. We’d experienced technology. Walter and I saw a lot. Nausea would be inevitable.24

And now, the millennium has come.25

***26

Walter and I are tired. We have seen much. We have suffered much. We never aged. We are still seventeen years old and we’re tired of looking at the same youthful faces in the mirror. We have to end everything.27

Tonight, we will end our lives.28

“Are you ready, Alexander,” Walter asked me after he readied the ropes.29

“I’m ready to be with you…in the next life,” I replied.30

And we savored each other’s sweet lips for the last time.31

After all, it is never the cursed and forbidden love of a vampire and a werewolf that burdens us much.32

It is the hateful stare of the world upon two males in love.33
