She leaned against onee of the fully bloomed blossom trees during the warm spring morning. It could've been the middle of December for all she knew. Her small body still shivered as the fresh tears spilled down her face.1
The small black dress wasn't enough to cover her long pale legs. They were exposed to the cold breeze that swayed around her. It felt kind of nice, but not at all comforting. Nothing could comfort her today.2
All the ones she loved stood around her, except for one. He, was laying in the coffin. The one she loved most, was being pulled away from her; ripped right from her heart. Everyone was clustered in a small circle around him, except for her. She had to leave, it was too much to bare.3
The priest soft voice was just a quiet murmur now. She perceived some words, and couldn't catch others. She did hear her name out of the jumble of words, however. After, people twisted and turned to look at her. She faced away towards to parking lot.4
Why couldn't have I died? She cried in her head. Why did he have to die? Why!? He had a future, I didn't have one unless it was with him. Why!?5
She cried to herself until she heard Evan's little sister, Isabella, come to her. "Mia! Mia!" She called, tugging at her hand. "Everyone's asking for you!" Her light blonde curls bounced on her shoulders, waiting for Mia to respond. She was much to little to realize what was going on, let alone what Mia was going through.6
"In a minute." Mia replied, not even turning around to look at her.7
"Okay Mimi!" She replied. Then, she turned, the dirt sticking to her to her little heels. "Tra la la.." She sang as she skipped back to the burial. 8
Mia wiped away the last of her tears. If her mother hadn't told her to wear waterproof mascara, it would have been a disaster. Everything about her today was black. Black shoes, dress, makeup, jewelry, purse, even her hair honey brown hair was dyed blacker. Not usual for the chirpy, high spirited Mia. You'd never see her in anything but bright colors, with a smiled plastered on her face. 9
She took her time walking back to the burial. They wanted her, so she could say goodbye. The only problem was, she didn't want to. She promised him, and he promised her. Her heart was his heart. Her soul was his soul. No world could break them apart. She promised, so she couldn't! More tears streamed down her face. 10
People cleared a path for her as she walked. Everything looked gray to her. The sky, the grass, even her friends and family. It was all gray. The blossoms fell down as the breeze shifted in direction. One landed in her hand as she held them out. They shook. She placed them on his coffin. People watched, some quiet, others crying. She dropped to her knees. They couldn't support her now. 11
"Evan, I love you, and I never got to tell you." Her hands clamped into fists. "I never got my chance. It's not fair, it's NOT!" She slammed her fists into the coffin, and bowed her head, crying. The tears rolled down quickly. "I miss you already, it kills me." She whispered. "I'm not saying goodbye, because I will be with you again, but I need you to know I love you. I love you more than the air I breathe. I love you more than anything. I just want to hold you one last time...." 12
She shut her eyes, stopping more tears from escaping. "I'm finished." She breathed. Her chest rose and fell under the fabric of the dress. The wind had mellowed, and the blossoms didn't fall as much now. The one she had held was stuck to her palm, crushed into a few pieces. She still held it. The dark black case was dropped into the dark hole in the ground. 13
"Come back." She whispered quietly. She felt a warm hand on her back. It was Isabella. 14
"Mimi, don't cry." She prompted. Her small fingers reached for hers. Mia took it cautiously, then relaxed. Isabella had the same face as Evan. Full lips, light sea green eyes, brown hair, and tall. Evan towered over her at 6'2, or at least he used to. Thinking of Evan only made her cry more. People coaxed her to think of the happy memories of him, but it was impossible. All she could think about was the last time she saw him.15
***16
"You have the most perfect face." He remarked, pushing a strand of loose hair behind her ear. She rested her head on his shoulder as they laid down in the grass in his mother's garden. A patch of daffodils was growing, and the warmth of the sun was comforting. They simply basked in it, enjoying the spring afternoon together.17
"You have to most perfect everything." She smiled, burying her face in his chest. He wrapped his big arms around her. 18
"I don't deserve you." She decided, pulling away from him. She scrambled on top of him. "But I am the luckiest girl there is." She reached down, kissing his lips softly. She melted into him, the kiss growing in intensity. He pulled her even closer, keeping one hand on her neck, the other on her waist.19
"I love you Mia Lynn Brookes." He whispered in her ear. She rested her head on his chest, listening to the shoft steady rythm of his heartbeat. "Nothing will change that." He declared, rubbing her cheek lightly. The colored ran up her neck to her face. When he touched her, every part of her body tingled. 20
"You could make me smile even if the world was crashing down around us." She laughed. They sat up, and she still was perched on his lap. She looked out at the woods next to the garden. After about 1 1/2 miles of trees, it led to a small lake, where they went swimming in the summer.21
She sighed. "I can't wait to go swimming in the lake." She strained to see through the tunnels of green, the moss camouflaging everything. She remembered the first time they tried going hiking in there, and they actually got lost. That was how they found the lake. 22
"Mhhm." He murmured. He hummed softly, drumming his fingers along her arm. Something else was occupying his thoughts. She looked up at his beautiful face. It glowed in the sun. He was like an angel, without the wings. He had bright blue eyes, and they shimmered like a pool. Light radiated off of him. She smiled. They were meant to be together. To spend the rest of their lives together. It was fate that brought them together. Unless you wanted to count their friend Jodi for introducing them, and the coffee shop where they meant, but that was irrelevent. All that mattered was that he was in her life, now and forever. They were meant for each other by the way his lips fit with hers. The way she fit perfectly into his arms. The way he always knew how to dry her tears.23
When she snapped back to reality, he was still lost, deep in thought. "What are you thinking about?" She asked, shaking him to pull him out of the trance. He shook a little, startled to be disturbed. 24
"What?" He asked, looking around him. he hadn't heard her question. He probably wouldn't have heard a plane coming towards them. 25
"What are you thinking about?" She asked again, growing eager to hear his answer. Placing a hand on his shoulder she reached up and stroked his hair. "Tell me, please?"26
He smiled down at her. Oh how she loved that crooked smile. "I'm thinking about the future." He kissed her forehead with great fervor. The kisses trailed from her eyelids, to her cheek, then lips, then her throat. She felt dizzy.27
"What did you see?" She asked excitedly. Her breathing was heavy. 28
"I saw you." He replied simply. His focus was off again. It was like he couldn't help but get lost in thought. The muscles in his neck strained when he got frustrated. He pulled tufts of grass out of the earth also. 29
"What's the matter?" She cooed, nuzzling her head against his like a cat. 30
"I wish I had a mirror to see into the future. It kills me that I can't see what's going to happen. I want to be ready."31
She kissed his fingertips. "Everything will be fine. You know we're meant to be together, now shush!" He went to rant on some more, but she silenced him with a kiss.32
"What are you doing tonight?" She asked him, playing with the ring he'd given her. It was a gold band, with a small emerald in the middle; her birthstone. It sparkled in the afternoon sunlight. She couldn't of asked for a better gift.33
"Working." He replied with a groan. "Might go to Paul's after."34
She kissed his cheek. "Well, I'm gonna go. Be good!" She laughed, hugging him one last time.35
She wriggled out of his arms, running towards the white gate. 36
"Wait!" He called after her. He got up and ran after her, meeting her at the gate.37
"Hm?" She asked, smiling at him.38
"What do you see Mi..." 39
She smiled, slamming the gate shut in his face playfully, and ran to the car.40
"Come to my window tonight, and I'll tell you!" Then, she started the car and drove off into the twilight. 41
***42
He never showed up at her window, but two policemen did show up at her door to tell her that one fatal car accident had pulled the love of her life right out of her hands.43
Mia and the little girl just stood there, hand in hand. 44
What do you see?45
The clouds gathered quickly in the sky. The blossom trees no longer swayed gently, but were shoved around in the bustling wind. She could almost taste the mist in the air. Soon it would pour, she could sense it.46
I see you...47
Mia's bottom lip trembled. Her heart was cracking, she was dying...48
She could feel it..49
They were covering his coffin, packing the dirt tightly over it. His beautiful face would never face sunlight again, ever. 50
You could make me smile, even if the world was crashing around us...51
She exploded, she ran to the burial site, crying harder than she ever had in her life. She didn't care if people saw. She wouldn't have cared even if it meant.. well, anything.52
"I saw you!" She half cried, half screamed. She grabbed as much dirt as she could in her hands, trying to recover him. "I saw you Evan I saw you!" Her whole body trembled, just as the sky began to quiver. Thunder began to rumble up high. Someone was pulling on her shoulder.53
"Mia, come on...." Her father urged. 54
"NO!" She screamed as he tried to pry her away. "NO!"55
She clawed at the dirt. "I saw you! I saw you. I saw... I saw..." She was crying so hard she was out of breath, hyperventalating. "I saw YOU, AND ONLY YOU!"56
The sky seemed to have exploded the big drops of rain pelted down. People ran to their cars, those who had umbrellas pulled them out. Mia stayed on the ground clawing at the dirt. She was drenched from head to toe. The lighting bolts flickered off somewhere in the distance. 57
"WHY!?" She screamed at the sky, then at the ground where her one true love now lay, dead. You couldn't even tell she was crying now, the rain came down so hard. The cold win danced around her while the rain came crashing down on her.58
She collapsed on the ground in tears. Dirty, distressed, and still in hysterics her father picked her up, to take her home. 59
All she could mumble through the shaking sobs were, "I just wanted to see him one last time."60
*** Later that night ***61
The dream seemed so real to her. It was like he was there. Holding her in his safe arms. They were dancing. He spun her in circles, and she laughed. Her face flowed brighter than anything. He looked down at her, smiling at her so proudly it was like nothing else. She cried in her sleep, but not from misery, but from happiness. Seeing him breathing, being able to feel his heart beating. She couldn't long for anything else that way she did for Evan. 62
The dream was so vivid. Everything was white. Her dress, his tux, the dance floor, and most importantly, the blossoms. They drifted in the sky, fluttering around them. They landed in her hair, and all around them. It was like Heaven, except no one had to suffer. It was nothing but bliss.63
Until she woke up. 64
Mia, sat on her bed. She pushed aside the tearstreaked pillow. If there were more tears for her to cry she would, but there just couldn't be. She was cried out. Every inch of her cheeks tasted of salt. 65
She walked out onto the balcony of her bedroom. There was beautiful moon, perfect in round. It was low in the sky, it almost seemed like she could touch it. Although she knew it was impossible, she reached out to it. Stretching as far as she could, onto her toes.66
Nothing.67
She sighed. "Evan, can you hear me? I know you can. Please talk to me, tell me you're there watching me. Give me a sign, please!"68
She really outdid herself by starting to cry again.69
Then, there was a shimmer of light next to her.70
"Evan?" she breathed, reaching out for the light.71
Her hand slipped right through it. 72
"Evan if thats you, I love you so much, and we will be together. She poised herself at the edge of the balcony. She slammed her eys shut. 73
1....2....3....74
Noooooo! The wind whispered. Or at least it sounded that way. The shimmering light came up to her face.75
"You really love me." She whispered. She put her hand up to the light. "We will be together one day, I promise. We can be angels together, flying around on Earth, in Heaven. I promised forever, and I'll never love another, as long as I live. I love you Evan Michael Patricks. Always and forever, whether you believe me or not. She kissed her hand, then blew at the light. It shimmered. It followed her to her bed, watched while she slept, and was with her everyday.76
Evan was her guardian angel.77
