Sure

I don't think there is anything wrong with sex in young adult books, long as it's not full-out erotica, like romance novels. Teens have sex. Parents like to tell us not to say words like "suck" or make sex jokes or read sexy books, but in truth a lot of are sexually active. They're trying to hide us from something we have already willingly experienced.1

I don't want all the books I read to have sex in them. I like historical novels, and adventure books, and some love stories. If two characters have sex it's nothing out of the ordinary.2

Something I really appreciate in young adult books is when the author doesn't just have the characters have sex and then move on. When they address it, talk about some of the people that SHOULDN'T be having sex, like an emotionally intense girl and an noncommittal jock. The books deal with issues that a lot of people don't think about when going into sex, like the risks that come with it, emotional and physical. I think it's productive of the authors to realize that kids are going to do it either way, so it's good if we have some knowledge about what we're getting into.

  • lmao@the jock and emotional girl

I agree with you, that people should be prepared before having sex. Perhaps the choice of whether to abort a child or give them up to adoption won't have to be IF people were responsible enough to use condoms without holes. Kidding IF people were responsible enough to do it when they're prepared. Fully.

There's a reason we have hands.. lmao

      HAHAHAHA nice. Agreed. (:

  • Many, many, many books now-a-day have sex in them, especially young adult.
I am 15 and the majority of books I read have sex in them. It isn't a law not to have it in young adult books but there are different religions that believe different things about the subject.
I think it is alright as long as it isn't full on erotica. The author can always skip those bits if necessary.
I myself, am not a huge fan of sex scenes and erotica in novels but like you said, it is good if there is a moral.

Haha I don't know if you've realized it or not but that's what I said. Pretty much all YA books have it except historical novels and stuff because it's just part of adolescence for most people. Sex in YA books is fine but erotica isn't.

  • I definitely agree with you. I'm 16 as well but I read do read erotica. I like it when it's done tastefully. However, I do not believe that erotica should be in young adult novels because not every teenager is mature enough to read erotica, I think.

Yeah, well said, I agree. I don't really read erotica (sometimes on this site if its by an author I know or something) but I accidentally read a romance novel when I was little and didn't stop when I finally figured out what was going on.

I think erotica's well and fine and all, I'm just shy about reading I always feel like someone knows and is judging me. And I agree, a lot of teens are not mature enough for it.

      • The two friends who know I read it think I'm stupid and weird. But I don't care.

I bet they don't really think that I bet they wish they could admit it too! Haha most people who haven't come across that by our age are either sexually retarded or incredibly sheltered .

  • Thanks for entering.

Good example with the jock and emotional girl. It was helpful in expressing your side of the matter.
I appreciate your opinion and thanks again. ^.^
