Tears streaming down her face once again, Mina ran over the conversation in her head. Had she made a mistake? Did she really hear what she thought?1
Her father, hearing only one side of the conversation, saw the tears in his oldest daughters eyes and stood to go to her. But before he could reach her, Dr. Cotton rushed into the room.2
"She is awake, you may go in and see her", he said, turning to Mina he looked at her with concern in his eyes. "And Mina, as your family doctor, I am ordering you to go home and get some rest. You are going to crash eventually, and I would rather you be in bed than here. Your step mother has just arrived and is in with your sister no.."3
Before he could finish his sentece, Mina had pused past him, racing downt the hall to the recovery room. Her step mother was standing with her back to the door, her short brown hair hainging down her back. She had obviously just rushed from the hospital, since she was still in her scrubs.4
Mina walked silently to her side, looking at the little baby in the bed. She could barely stifle the sob that threatened to choke her. No matter how many times she saw it, the sight of Allie being hooked up to machines and tubes and wires coming from her was always too much to bear. 5
Allie had her eyes open and was sniffling softly. She never cried. Ever. No matter how much pain or how scared she was. She was so strong. Mina reached down and placed her finger in Allies hand, feeling the strong grasp of the tiny girl. She let the tears fall as she whispered softly to the sister she loved so much.6
"Allie, My love... Midgie... I love you so... You will be ok.. Minee is here.. My baby girl" 7
Without looking she knew her step mother was glaring at her. She knew why also. She hated when Mina called any of her brothers or sisters her children. But to Mina, they were. She had practically raised them all. She ignored the look and continued to coo to her sister as her father entered and stood at the other side of the bed, doing the same.8
"Daddy," Mina said softly, noticing that Allies eyes were starting to close, "I know you are tired. Why dont you and Mom go home and Ill stay here with Allie?"9
Bracing herself for the impending argument, Mina was suprised when her father nodded.10
"Your right Mina, I am very tired and I am sure you are too." He said, looking at Minas Step mother.11
Still holding Allies hand, Mina turned to her dad and gave him a hug, kissing his cheek.12
"Dont worry Daddy", She whispered into his ear "Everything will be fine. I will be here, and Dr.Cotton will update me on everything. Ill call you if anything changes"13
Watching as he walked out with her step mother, Mina drug a chair to the side of Allies bed. Stroking the soft brown curls of the baby, Mina began to sing softly, a lullabye she had known from years past.14
------------A Few Days Later--------------15
Mina was rolled out of the hospital in a wheelchair with Allie in her lap. The young girl was sound asleep and pale. Mina hated seeing her little sister looking so sick. 16
"Do you think it was wise for Dr.Cotton to let her go so soon?" She asked her father who had pulled thier large Limo around to the entrance.
