Michael woke up slowly, but didn't open his eyes. Instead, he listened for the sound of other peoples' footprints. The government would definitely be after him, and there was no way in hell he'd be caught unaware.1
He was snapped out of his thoughts as he opened his eyes, the sunlight making him wince and close them again. Suddenly, they shot back open, and he stared at the sky in awe.2
Almost his entire life, he'd seen nothing but dreary, dark skies and the clouds of polluted air that blocked out all but the tiniest bit of light. Now, looking around, he stood in a huge field, so large that the grass resembled an ocean of green.3
It had worked. Michael had fronted a huge rebellion against the government, after discovering how they controlled the populace with drugs placed in the general water supply. Eventually, he'd been trapped in the government research center, and, seeing no chance of escape, had ran into a room that had never been open when he'd been there in the past, yet was strangely open then. He'd heard they researched some really unstable thing in there, so was surprised to see only a stone door frame in the center of the room. On second glance, though, he could see grass through the door. His decision had been made when he heard running footsteps growing louder by the second, and without a single regret he'd ran through.4
The door seemed to be gone now.
Author notes
This is very likely to be massively changed at a later date, as I need to write this character's backing story at some point.
