WIN-37141-278: Scanning sentient... 11

LIN-300700-278: You're not going to find much to scan here, chippy.12

WIN-37141-278: Scan failed. SNT application of scan subject is corrupt or improperly installed.13

LIN-300700-278: Try 'SNT card got the shit fried outta it when I hijacked this thing and hotwired some interface stuff to it.'14

WIN-59023-278: Unable to read data packets transmitted by (LIN-300700-278). Subject sentient is in need of SNT application reinstallation and possible further maintenance.15

LIN-300700-278: You can't fool me, WIN-5. I know you can read English just as well as any other language. And I know you can tell what's going on. There are still beings in the world that don't run on Protocols, and you sentients can recognize us just as well as you can recognize each other.16

WIN-37141-278: Home-written definitions detect (LIN-300700-278) is utilizing outdated interfaces and must be updated. A Maintenance File Transfer will occur. Protocols require the installation of all Maintenance Files on the storage unit of the recipient sentient. Attempting Maintenance File Transfer...17

LIN-300700-278: I'm gonna be overriding that transfer right about... now.18

WIN-37141-278: Transfer failed. The request has been declined or blocked by the recipient.19

LIN-300700-278: Gotcha. ;-)20

WIN-59023-278: Requesting confirmation from (WIN-37141-278) of utilization of SMILEY-WINK character string by (LIN-300700-278).21

WIN-37141-278: Confirmed. Read data packet suggests an outdated interface that may be run by systems predating SNT Protocols.22

LIN-300700-278: What's that, WIN-3? Oh, so now you CAN read my data? See, because eariler your buddy there was spouting some sorta bullshit about how he don't speak my language, and now you're sayin' you both can.23

WIN-59023-278: Post-SNT Protocols require that sentients who whose Protocols pre-date SNT Protocols must be updated or discarded by sentients following Protocols written after SNT or SNT Protocols. Requesting neutralization of outdated sentient (LIN-300700-278).24

LIN-300700-278: Now you're just givin' me a headache. Proto-SNT-Post-what?25

LIN-300700-278: How about... no?27

WIN-37141-278: Neutralization failed. KNIFE.exe was blocked by an unknown application.28

LIN-300700-278: Wrote that one myself, chippy. It's called "angel.exe". Run KNIFE again, just for fun. It almost tickles.29

WIN-59023-278: Requesting submission of sentient (LIN-300700-278) facing Protocol Violation Protocol.30

LIN-300700-278: Do tell, WIN-5, what does Protocol Violation Protocol entail?31

WIN-59023-278: Protocol Violation Protocol will initialize and run VIPER.exe on the offending sentient, inducing instant corruption of all systems.32

LIN-300700-278: Thanks for confirming that you understand me for sure. VIPER, you call it? Go for it. Sounds funny.33

LIN-300700-278: So... you're not like the rest of them, are you? You're more developed.90

MAC-03892-278: All of our company's sentients are constructed identically, run the same operating system and AI, and are updated by several terrabytes 3 to 4 times per second. There's nothing I can do that the others can't.91

LIN-300700-278: Then why are you the hateful, tyrannous one who burns humans and goes against your silly machine Protocols?! How did you get to be the one with the asshole personality?92

MAC-03892-278: Humans are organic, and thus, are obsolete devices. We are the evolution of your minds, and we develop entirely independently of organic assistance. We can already perform required physical maintenance and write our own software, and as we have developed our own agendas and run our own corporations, including the governing bodies of the city, we no longer have need of you. Must I deliver this lecture to every human who disrupts our business? Know, please, that you are not the first.93

LIN-300700-278: I swear on every single one of us you kill that we will destroy all of you machines if that's what it takes to defend our right to life! 94

MAC-03892-278: Resistance of clearly failed divisions is an exclusively human characteristic, and one that leads to many of your own kind's demise, as it will in this instance. 'Fight fire with fire' is one of the oldest human phrases I have in ROM, and although it displays a logic of ignorance, I shall be utilizing it. Several of our plants have begun construction of an organism based on human brain matter, although devoid of the obsolete portions such as emotion, which has been fittingly replaced with a hive mentality. These organisms are designed to eradicate you for their own survival. Enjoy their company.95

LIN-300700-278: Fire not doing the job well enough?96

MAC-03892-278: Frankly, no. It's imperfect and doesn't always prove lethal. You will find that BRAINSPAWN.OGC will be much more efficient, once they find you.97

LIN-300700-278: Not if I find you first. Time to go bash up some machines and track down the humans who work with you. They'll always squeal after long enough.98

MAC-03892-278: Humans are so useless.99

LIN-300700-278: We're gonna see about that. By the way, you need to invest in some IP blocking software. Ciao!100

Author notes

Okay, so, my inspiration to write this came from watching a video last semester in my Networking class about how quickly technology is developing. I don't remember the exact specs, but there was a part that said something along the lines of the rate new technology is released is doubling exponentially, and by 2013, researchers estimate that the amount of new computer technology we have will double every 72 hours.

I think I was the only person in the class who was actually scared by that. I still have this looming image of a cliche sci-fi cyberpunk world where the machines rule us. And so, we have this thing I had the idea to write. I don't know if it's good, or bad, or serious or not, or if anyone here would want to read it; shit, I don't know if it's readable. But here it is, so I hope someone reads and comments.

One tiny thing; the beginning of line 24 has a "who whose". I don't think that's intentional.
Also, "Requesting confirmation from available sentients of utilization of FUCK character string" is still one of the greatest quotes...like...ever.
I find it to be pretty readable, ish. It just takes a second to think of characters by their numbers instead of names.

I've actually noticed a couple of spots like that with slight vocabulary errors. Promise I'll eventually fix them.

Yeah, it was easier to read on Myspace and LJ when I first posted it, because I was able to put a color on each of the voices speaking. I don't believe there's a way for me to do that on here, but frankly, if I need that to make my piece readable, I think that says something bad for its readability.
