The response was deadly silent. Until he grinned and let a chuckle escape from his lips. “Why are you laughing? This isn’t funny! Did you really do this?”1
“Of course, I did. She stole from me.”2
“What would she take from you?”3
“Five dollars.”4
Allie left without saying bye. 5
She arrived home, and hugged her from behind. “Mother, I’m sorry,” pulling a bobby pin from her hair, Allie shoved the small aluminum piece into her mother’s jugular. She continued to say, “but it’s for the best.” She kissed her mother’s forehead and walked away. Pulling a five-dollar-bill from her purse, she swallowed it while on her way to the police station. 6
“I’ve killed my mother,” she said to the man at the counter. She raised her hands to him as proof, and he simply nodded. Moments later, she was in the back of a black and white car on the way to the State Penitentiary . . . with Jay.7
The prison had two wards - one for women and one for men. The government didn’t have enough money to pay for two full prisons. Allie was brought in, and the first thing they did was take away all of her belongings. She had none with her. She was in awe of the jail house, much like a child in a candy store. 8
After she’d been thrown into her cell, she waited until no one was looking, and bent over the toilet. Following that, she, after several tries, regurgitated her five dollars. She wanted to give it to Jay, but she wouldn’t be able to quite yet.9
As time went by, Allie made friends, enemies, and connections - connections to Jay. Her cell mate, Bobby, had been rewarded for her good behavior. She was able to have notebooks; she loved to write.10
“‘Ey, Bobby.” Allie got her attention, “I know you11
love your notebook, but can I have a paper?”12
“What for?” She questioned Allie.13
“For Jay. I need to write him a short note.” 14
Allie got the paper and one of Bobby’s pencils, and wrote the short note she spoke of:15
Jay, even though I can't be with you, I am at least16
where you are. Here is your five dollars. I love you.17
-Allie18
She had the letter passed to Jay through her friends. That night, she laid in her bed and stared into the ceiling and imagined the sky with a satisfied smile upon her face.19
