A War Between Souls

She sat on her bed, Reading the newest letter, trying not to let the tears fall. She promised herself she wouldnt... But she couldnt help it.. They slowly ran down her cheeks, glistening in the glow from the overhead light.1

"Hey,2

I know I havent written you in a few weeks. Have been in Sick Hall all week. Got the flu. They were about to send me home but I told them I want to stay.. Missed the last few PT's but Sarge said that I can make them up.3

I want you to promis me something..4

If I dont Graduate, I dont want you to come down here. I wouldnt want you to sit there and drive all that way to just see me fail. I wouldnt be able to take it. 5

Anyway, going to bed, just wanted to let you know I am ok and that Ill try and write you more often.6

She couldnt stand it.. She looked and searched but knew that it wouldnt be there... The I Love You just happened to not be there8

"Maybe he forgot to put it down", She thought to herself,"He said he was sick..."9

But she knew that it wouldnt be there, and probably never would be... They had been engaged almost a year, and the only time he had said "I love you" since he joined was the day he left.... She knew what was wrong, But she just couldnt bring herself to think it. She knew he was cheating, But she had no proof.. just the lack of letters.10

Maybe she was overeacting...No, she wasnt. She knew...11

"Mina! Mina! Get down her Girl! I need you!" Her Grandmother called to her, from downstairs.12

She slowly stood up, looking herself in the mirror making sure she didnt have red eyes or blotchy cheeks. Her Deep red hair hanging over her soulders, Green eyes still watering slightly. She shrugged slightly and quickly skipped downstairs, seeing her grandmother struggling to get a pot down in the kitchen.13

"Oh gran! Why dont you ask me to get these down when you need it?" She asked, laughing softly at the sight of her 5' Nothing grandmother reaching above her14

"Oh hush, now help me! I want to get dinner done before your grandfather comes home and you sitting there snickering isnt going to help", She looked at her granddaughter carefully, "Have you been crying Mina? Whats he done now? I swear Ill go to Oklahoma myself and strangle that boy if he has hurt you agian!"15

Mina smiled softly, knowing that if she lied she would never get away with it, but she did anyway, "Its ok, Just got another letter from him. The first one in 4 weeks. It was so short, but I guess I should expect that..."16

Her grandmother looked at her suspiciously, filling the pot with water for spaghetti. "Child, I know when something is wrong with you, you carry your emotions on your shoulders. You know you can tell me anything. Anything Mina"17

"I know Gran. Thank you", Mina said as she carefully sliced tomatoes and onions.18

Later that night in her room, Mina layed on her bed, reading over the 20 something letters she had recieved since Ross went to Boot Camp. He was in AIT now and had a lot more freedom, she knew. He talked about going to the bars around the base all the time with his Computer Network buddies. 20

She never told him, but it bothered her that he would call in the middle of the night, trashed off his ass and telling her of his adventures for the night. She lay back on her pillow remembering one such phone call....21

-Ross, Slurring badly- "Heeeeeeyyyy sexy! Its me!"22

-Mina, murmuring sleepily- "Ross? Is that you? What time is it?"23

-Ross, Laughing histerically, Loud banging and glass breaking heard in the background- "Its only 3 o clock here Mina, Why do you sound tired? You should be up Partyinging!!!!"24

-Mina frowns, she can almost smell the alchohol on his breath- "Ross, where are you? Arent you supposed to be on base tonight?'25

-Ross laughs, and yells to those behind him- "Hey guys, Mina said we're supposed to be on base! Now SHES our Drill Sargent I see! HAha Mina, lighten up, We have a free pass tonight and Im dancin with all the nice hot girls here tonight! -laughs- oh man did I just say that!"26

-Mina sighs softly- "Ross Why dont you call me when your sober ok? You know I hate when you call me like this!"27

-Ross whispers into the phone slurring- "Aww baby, comeon! You're not mad at me! Ok alright Ill call you tomorrow night. Bye!"28

She opens her eyes, tears welling in them again. She brushes them away angrily, hating that she has let him get to her this way....30

"Damn him...Damn him and the Damn Army!", She thought to herself, pounding the pillow with her hand.31

She lays ther, praying for awhile, then slowly drifts off into a fitful sleep. Waking up suddenly at 3am realizing that her phone was ringing...32

-Mina- "Hello?....Yes this is she. Is everything ok Kaya? No...Sweetie slow down, tell me what happened? Is it your mom? Kaya, please.....No.....No it cant be... Please goddess no.... Not Allie... Are you sure? Ok, Ill be right there, just hang there. Dont leave!-33
