Procrastination can be very bad

I struggle over the wording for a sentence for my essay. Dammit, I hate writing essays. I take off my glasses and set them next to me before burying my eyes in my palms, rubbing them fiercely hoping that I can rub the right word into my mind. Better yet, rub the whole damn paper there. I imagine the words pouring over themselves to be written until my fingers ache from typing, but I have the perfect paper. 1

My phone starts to vibrate in my pocket, pulling me from my daydream. I sigh and put my glasses back on. 2

I answer the phone and the voice on the other end says starkly, “You're going to be an aunt.”3

“What?!” My jaw drops. No, I'm not talking to my biological sister, but close enough. I'm talking to my best friend who's in a rocky relationship as it is. A baby's not going to fix that. She's going to be just another single mother trying to make ends meet. She wanted to be a doctor. Now what?4

“I just found out.”5

“What're you going to do?” I ask still struck.6

“Kill myself.” 7

I know she's only being dramatic, but my reply is automatic, “Don't kill yourself! Do you want me to come over?”8

“Will you? Please?”9

“Of course. I have to e-mail my professor that I won't be in class tonight.” I curse myself for not writing my essay sooner. 10

“Thanks. See you when you get here.”11

She sounds close to tears. I hang up with her and find I'm close too. Shit.

Hey, Rini. The beginning of this story certainly draws you in. . . are you intending to add to it?

I may. This actually happened today. Turns out she didn't really need me so I kind of skipped class for no good reason. I'm disappointed to say the least.

Well that sucks. For you, I mean. It made for an interesting story, though. I'm glad you were able to vent your frustrations in writing.
