Short Story (Kalima & Vincent)

Chapter 11

‘The night sky was always captivating. I loved it; I always sat on the manor roof and watched the stars….’2

“Do you mind?”3

“Hmm…”4

“Kalima?”5

I let out a drawn out sigh of happiness and turned around dreamily.6

“Oh!!”7

I stood abruptly on the side of the roof dropping my pen and paper. Vincent looked at me, his head tilted slightly. 8

“Vincent, where do you get off scaring me like that!”9

“ I scared you? It looked like you were lost in your own world; I was talking to you for almost half an hour.”10

“Sorry Vincent I didn’t realize, I’m trying to get this book done”11

I bent down to pick up the paper and almost slid down the roof. 12

“Watch it Kalima, I thought vampires were supposed to have good balance.”13

Vincent grabbed my arm and pulled me back up. 14

“Who told you that? I am part human; maybe I missed out on that part.”15

Vincent chuckled and pulled me next to him, his arm around my shoulders. 16

“Anyway, that’s what I’m here for, and like I said before, do you mind?”17

I shook my head and looked at the stars. 18

“Not at all, I mean you have to do it every once and a while don’t you.”19

Vincent frowned at looked at me, noticing my words came out faster then I meant them to. 20

“You sure you don’t mind, because if you do…”21

“No I’m fine with it really.”22

“Okay then, if you don’t mind”23

He removed his hands from my shoulders for the briefest second to take his shirt off then put them back as a dark grey shadow formed a circle around us.24

“If anyone saw this, goodness knows what they would think. They would probably take one look at me and run screaming”25

I interrupted him with a look of horror26

“I’m the monster here not you, you have nothing to be ashamed of.”27

I moved his hand, slid down the side of the roof, landing quietly on the ground in a crouch before rising and walking towards the street.28

“Kalima, you know I didn’t mean that.”29

Vincent landed with grace in front of me his wings folding against his bare back. 30

“You’re an angel Vincent, I’m from the deepest pits of hell, How could anyone run screaming from you.”31

I walk around him. 32

“Kalima you know you’re not from hell, you didn’t choose to be a vampire did you.”33

“That still doesn’t despite the fact I’m a creation from down under.”34

Vincent rose slowly, his wings beating lightly, creating barely any noise to fly next to me.35

“Nobody thinks of you like that…I don’t.”36

“Vincent, apart from my mother you’re the only one that knows about me and what I am.”37

To that, Vincent didn’t reply, he couldn’t and I knew it. The only people that knew were my mother and him.38

All of a sudden I felt myself lift off the ground, a pair of arms around my waist, my stomach dropping the higher I went. 39

“Vincent what are you doing?!”40

“Don’t scream Kalima, you may wake everyone up.”41

I could feel the chuckle in his chest rather then hear it as we went higher and I struggled to stay still. 42

“Stop it Kalima you don’t want me to drop you by accident”43

“Can we go back down?”44

“Why, are you not having fun?”45

“Of course I am, but my stomach is still down there.”46

This time when he laughed I heard it, and I laughed with him until his flying faltered and I almost choked. 47

“Vincent please, I don’t want to become a spot on the road.”48

His laughter died down at once so he could concentrate on flying. I held the pen and paper in my hand loosely as I looked at the lights of the city. Sydney was a marvelous place to live; there was so much to do and so many places to go.49

“I should have brought my sketch book, such a nice view.”50

“Oh? Well there is always next time”51

I smiled, liking the thought of there being a next time and felt the night air growing colder. If not for his warm chest against my back, I would have been freezing, but I didn’t say anything as we neared the water.52

We started circling down to the ground near the harbor.53

“This a good place to land?”54

I nodded in full bliss as we finally reached the ground and he planted me on my feet gently.55

“Don’t let me go please.”56

He kept his hands around my waist. 57

“Why not?”58

“I’ll fall on my face.”59

“Oh.”60

He tried to stifle his laughter but failed miserably.61

“I can’t feel that you know.”62

He stopped for a second, only to burst into more fits of laughter.63

“Sorry Kalima.”64

“That’s fine, I know how utterly hilarious I can be.”65

I grinned and spun around to face him.66

“Of course you are Kalima.”67

His answering grin told me he was being as sarcastic as I was. 68

“I think I can stand now.”69

“Oh right.”70

He let go somewhat reluctantly and moved next to me as I spun around. 71

“I love Sydney Harbor at night.”72

I checked my watch and had to stop myself from gasping. The last time I checked my watch it was twelve o’clock, now it was almost three in the morning. 73

“Don’t you mean early morning?”74

“Early morning?”75

I flashed him my watch as his eyes grew as large as saucepans. 76

“That’s what I was thinking.”77

He nodded once. 78

“Yes I meant early morning.”79

I sat down on the bench facing the water by the opera house. 80

“Kalima...”81

Vincent sat next to me, looking out over the water, not making eye contact.82

“Mmm, what is it?”83

“We have been friends for years now, I was just wondering, will it stay like this?”84

“Like what?”85

“You know, being close to each other like we are now?”86

I smiled though a wave of panic went through me. 87

“Of course I’m only 18 and your 19 so we have years ahead of us.”88

His brows furrowed together in concern. 89

“But what if…”90

He saw the worry in my eyes as I looked at him. 91

“Don’t worry, I’m just being stupid.”92

I relaxed slightly. 93

“Okay, well if you need to tell me anything just remember you always can.”94

He nodded and stood. 95

“I had better get you home, before your mother finds out your missing.”96

“Yea, I bet I could race you home.”97

He raised his eyebrow, the look of concern still in his eyes.98

“Is that a dare?”99

A wicked grin spread over my face.100

“It is now, runners get a head start!”101

I tapped his shoulder before blurring and running towards my house, hearing Vincent curse behind me as he took off.102

I arrived at my small house, not the slightest bit out of energy and looked around.103

Vincent wasn’t here yet. Either I was faster then the last time or he decided to let me win. I sat on the porch steps leading up to the veranda out the front. Amazingly during my run back here I managed to hold onto the paper, well what was left of it.104

A rustling came from the side of the house making me jump.105

I walked over cautiously sniffing the air. I couldn’t smell anything so I crept closer only to find nothing but a few leaves.106

It must be Vincent trying to scare me107

“Its ok Vincent you can come out now.”108

I heard the whistle of wind letting me know someone was behind me. I turned around fast planning to pounce at Vincent and caught a glimpse of a black shape before it disappeared again.109

“This is getting weird”110

I mumbled the words to myself as I walked towards the front of the house.111

I would wait for him there.112

I got half way before another sound of warning came from behind me. This time I ignored it.113

Big mistake.114

A hand was pulled over my mouth as a sharp pain seared through my neck, making me crumble to the ground and see nothing but darkness.115

Chapter 2116

I awoke to the sound of whispering near my head.117

I chose to keep my eyes shut tightly, the pain in my neck throbbing, did someone bite me?118

I changed to my other senses; I needed to find out where I was.119

I was lying on something solid and hard, relatively cold.120

A steel bench maybe and that smell, was that antiseptic? 121

I stifled the urge to gag as the smell of decay wafted towards me.122

What was this place, I’m sure no such place would exist without the health inspectors shutting it down for rodent control.123

The whispering ceased as a door banged closed and I slowly opened my eyes, it was now or never.124

The light was blinding. Everything was white. White walls, white floor, white shelves, white blankets. It resembled the one place a dreaded the most.125

A hospital.126

I sat up quickly, noticing I had little clothes on and I was covered in wires.127

A fresh wave of panic went through me as I ripped them all of, making the machines do their annoying beeping. 128

I looked around for something to wear, preferably my clothes but found none.129

“That would be bloody right, they took my clothes.”130

I jumped down and grabbed one of the white blankets.131

It would have to do. 132

I eyed the room suspiciously; no doubt there would be cameras and when they see what I they will come running, so first things first, destroy them.133

I paced the room, my feet making little sound, until I reached a mirror and gaped in horror, my hand flying up to my neck.134

There was a purple and blue bruise that covered half my neck trailing up it like a bad tattoo. Tears well up in my eyes as I moved closer and traced my fingers down my neck. I had to get out of here, I had no idea what they were intending to do but it can’t be good. I smashed the glass and found a camera tucked away in the back. 135

Idiots.136

I crushed the camera before looking around for more, finding two more and disposing of them.137

A few shadows passed under the door frame making my heart beat wildly. They were both men, I could tell by their heart beats. I stood to the side and listened to the conversation.138

“Is she awake yet?”139

“No she should be out for another few hours yet, that’s what he told me anyway”140

“Did he say where he found her.”141

“Nope, all he said was she would be useful, you know where not supposed to know that anyway, it’s classified.”142

“I know, but don’t you think it’s a little odd, he always seems to bring them in unconscious.”143

“Don’t go judging his actions, if he finds out…”144

“I know I know.”145

The shadows moved away as she listened for the receding steps to fade. Who was this person they called he? The word useful replayed in her head over and over. Did they somehow guess what she was? It was near impossible, she was sure she never did, unless…146

The door opened suddenly as a young man in a lab coat walked in, his head down to his clip board writing furiously before looking up.147

“Hey what are you doing up...?”148

“What am I doing here?”149

I didn’t wait for an answer as he ran to get security; instead I lunged at him knocking his head against the wall.150

I grabbed his lab coat and wrapped it around myself, taking his access card with me.151

  • I think its good so far, I want to know more! lol, though in paragraph 146, you changed the point-of-view. It should be 'I' instead of 'she'.
Other than that it all looks good. oh and hurry up and post the next chapter!
