A cool breeze blew Ryan's long hair as he stood on the cold dock near his house. Dull gray mists swirled around him like so many ghosts thrown together into a veil. From the expression on his face, you would never have been able to guess how he really felt. A thin smile was played out on his lips, but in his heart a burning fear lived.1
The day before a group of four boys the same age as Ryan had disappeared in the freak storm that had brought the fog that now circled his body. Ryan hadn't known the sixteen year olds, but their deaths had brought a sharp reality to his attention.2
Ryan lived on the coast of Maine. He was popular in school and was a strait A student. He played sports and had loving parents that were very proud of him. Death and even suffering were the last things on his mind. Until today.3
Some realization that not even Ryan could fully grip had been set off with a bang. The realization that people his age weren't invincible. That death would not wait until he had had his fun. He wasn't sure if it mattered to him, or if it was a stupid realization that he should have had long ago. It wasn't something he wanted to think about either. Just a hard truth that had presented itself like a slap to the face.4
Rhyan's head was pulled back to reality as the sound of his name being called broke into the silence. He recognized his mother's voice, probably calling him in for breakfast. He emitted a low sigh and turned back the way he had come an hour ago. At the end of the dock he turned for one last glimpse of the thick mist. He murmured a quick prayer before going into his house.5
