"Damnit!" I throw down my pencil, tears of frustration pricking my eyes. I've been trying to write this essay for days and have gotten nowhere. Nothing I write has been good enough and there are piles and piles of papers cluttering my desk. My computer has three drafts of the same essay up on it's screen and yet I don't even have the first paragraph done. 1
I look at the clock and see that it's two in the morning. It is pitch black outside and I can't see a thing because of the bright lights on inside my room. I lay my head in my hands, massaging my temples. My head is pounding and my eyes are probably tired and bloodshot. This essay is something I'm submitting for a contest and although I probably could just throw something together, I want it to be perfect. Nothing however is coming. NOTHING! 2
My head is empty and yet it feels like it wants to explode. Thoughts running through my head but none of them are about the essay which is what I most need to focus on. The tears are coming and I'm so frustrated that I want to scream. 3
The phone vibrates beside me and I snatch it up. "What?" I snap.4
"Uhhh hi? Is this Lisa?" 5
I blush as I hear the guy's voice on the other hand. My friend and crush, Julian. "I think you have the wrong number Julian. This is Abby."6
"Oh. Abby, hi. I didn't think I had your number." 7
I have to smile a little as I hold the phone between my ear and shoulder. "Well I guess you do."8
There's silence for a minute. 9
"So what's up?" Julian asks. 10
"Ummm nothing. Just trying to write my essay for the English contest. You gonna enter?" 11
Julian laughs. "Are you crazy? I'm not good with English. I wouldn't stand a chance!"12
I laugh with him and when he doesn't say anything else, the silence turns awkward. "So, did you want Lisa's phone number or anything?" 13
There's silence again and I hold my breath waiting for his response. He probably was trying to call Lisa to ask her out. 14
Lisa told me at the beginning of the week that she thought Julian was hot and she wouldn't mind if he asked her out. Since then I've hardly been able to think of anything else. After all Lisa is a gorgeous, peppy, outgoing girl who attracts all the guys. Julian would be crazy not to want her. I sigh, my elbow leaning on the desk and my cheek in my hand. "Julian?" 15
"I was actually trying to call her to ask for...your number."16
"Wh-what?!" 17
I can imagine Julian blushing--it's easy to make him uncomfortable--and I realize that I am blushing too. 18
"Yeah do you want to go to a movie or something sometime?" he asks.19
"Wow. Yeah-yeah sure!" I say, laughing a little bit.20
"Okay. I'll see you at school then," he says. 21
I smile. "All right. See you. Bye." 22
I hang up and twirl my pencil between my fingers when suddenly, it clicks!23
With a squeal of delight I put pencil to paper and the words just flow. Writer's block, meet your maker!!!!!!!!
