The Word I Hate The Most

Irony: the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning.1

an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.2

a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated.3

an objectively or humorously sardonic utterance, disposition, quality, etc.4

Irony...oh sweet Irony...My aunt came to visit me and she leaves this Sunday...She says irony a lot...A LOT...5

Everything to her is "Irony"6

"Your Aunt Kim was so Irony when that happened!"7

"You should have saw junior, he looked so irony."8

"Well that's an irony thought isn't it!?"9

It kinda pisses me off 10

I mean don't get me wrong she is the favorite of all m aunts, But its just annoying when she uses it so many times in an hour..or a day..11

I cant stand when someone says plain out "That's Irony..."12

I mean are you kidding me!13

It makes you sound like you feel you need to use a big word, but you don't actually know what it means! Like your just using it just because it fits!14

I mean if you see something explain it like maybe "The look on her face was rather Irony to me."15

I seriously hate that word16

The definition of irony is a bunch of stupid people dancing on a plane to a song made famous to a band that died in a plane crash....

I don't blame you being annoyed at the over use of it. I actually like the word, but I don't use the word that much I use ironic situations

Start using some random word around your aunt, when she complains tell her "That's irony!"

    A+

You are very right about its overuse and misuse. I am guilty as anyone and your comment made me go look some stuff up...the difference between sarcasm and irony, types of irony, etc. and your opinion and insight challenged me. Thank you.

I think I am a fan of the situational irony and the irony of fate. BUT I dislike sarcasm - written or spoken.

And as for the misuse of the word "irony," we call many things ironic when we mean them to be clever or humorous or twisted.

Within your response, your use of socratic irony was very effective.

Kudos to you, my dear niece.
