Logic or Love?

"Hey, how've you been?" the good-looking boy asked, sounding confident, but completely nervous deep down.1

"Uh, fine, I guess. How're you?" the girl responded, a little unsure why this beautiful boy was talking to her. She was after all no one special. Sure everyone liked her, but didn't care enough about her to want to talk to her. Expecially him. He was handsome, smart, and talented in every way. She hated to admit it, but she was in love with him. She tried her best to cover it up, with hateful words and snide comments, but she could not deceive herself.2

"Actually, I've been a little stressed lately." 3

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Anything I can do?" she asked with sincerity. She tries to be sarcastic, but her nature is truly one of care.4

"Well, yeah. You know the dance, I kind of need a date..."5

"You do not need one, you want one." she chuckled, "and how can I help, you know I'm not a matchmaker."6

"I know how you can help" he grinned that gleam in his eye, that she so well knew and loved. Beneath the glint there was something she did not see. The truth that he so loved this petite girl...He wanted to hold, protect, and laugh with her. 7

"Well, tell me this diabolical plan of yours" she leaned close and smiled, which sent both their hearts fluttering.8

"You could always come with me to the dance..." his confident voice about to break. He was excited and scared at what she had to say. This wonderful girl. Ever since he met her all he could think about was her. Everything was in an attempt to impress her. No one understood this love he felt for her. He saw the struggle between herself. How she was so sweet and at times very scared. This one girl sent him into a flurry of emotions never felt before. He finally unleashed them in that one question. 9

"...so, do you want to go?" he asked again, a little more timid.10

"Uh, dances aren't my thing. I'm such an awful dancer" She laughed it off. He must be desperate or bored, she thought. He was probably just messing with her head, trying to see how naive she was. Though her heart hoped that he meant it, she liked to think she knew better.11

"I'm not into dancing at all either. I just kind of wanted to, you know, hang out. With you." he said, fear running into his mind.12

"Oh, well dances aren't the ideal place for me to hang out. I'll see you later" She said quickly and tried to escape the hurt she saw in his beautiful grey eyes.13

"Wait..." he said as he gently pulled her back toward himself. 14

"Yeah..." she said her heart pounding hard inside her.15

"Please, will you go out with me? Not just to the dance, but for real..." he said, almost pleading.16

"No." the girl responded, almost fiercely.17

"Wh...why not?" he asked, a little baffled.18

"Many rationable reasons" she said, but he heard the uncertainty in her voice, a sign of hope.19

"...like" he urged.20

"You barely know me. And we are in different groups of people. There are reasons, let's pretend we never had this conversation"21

"I don't see how..."22

"Let me put it in a different perspective. If this were in eightenenth century Enlgand, you would be a duke, and I a mere peasant. Different societies. It could never work..."23

"Is that it? We could work through it." he said, very convincingly.24

"We're totally incompatible, and it's just not sensible for us to date. We're so different; different goals, thoughts, expectations..." she trailed off.25

"We'd make it work!" he said fervently.26

She thought and said, "See... I would have expected you to interpret my rant, but you said no witty comment, no soothing coo, or anything! It's silly for us to date." They both knew she was making excuses out of fear, but he was beginning to believe the worst.27

"Ration? Coherency? Love needs no logic or ration!" he said in a fit of passion.28

Then calmly, as if she were talking to herself she spoke, "There's the problem, you do not love me." She walked away. The boy was left speechless. He had never wanted anything more in his life. He was also not accustomed to rejection. The one thing he wanted could not be his. 29

"I do love you..." he said to himself as he felt his heart sink. He'd give everything to be with her. What was wrong with him? He saw the want in her eyes, the love that she too felt. He knew her, not even logic would hold her love back. There was another reason...he was going to do everything in his power to find out what shut this lovely girl's heart away from the rest of the world.30

If only he knew...the girl thought to herself. She was stupid. She knew she made a mistake, but she hoped it would in turn come out to be the right choice. She usually could read people's emotions, but this time was different. His emotion was different, too hard to read. If he cared he would have stopped me...she thought to herself. Trying to reassure herself that the choice she made was for the best. She closed her eyes and braced herself for the flood of tears that were sure to follow.31
