NOW:1
I sat watching as his labored breathing continued to be monitored by machines2
It's funny how in such a short space of time I've begun to love this person I barely know.3
Six Months Ago:4
I had been sitting in that hospital room for two hours. It was my extra curricular activity. Waiting for my grandfather to die was a game to me. I had been waiting for this moment my whole life. Ever since those pricks at the agency dropped me off with him, I've been wait for this bastard to croak.5
The double paned door slid open and the man in the lab coat walked in, punctual as usual. I greeted him with a melancholy smile. 6
"Good afternoon Frankenstein." 7
The young surgeon grinned and walked forward to check my grand father levels. "Now why my dear do you insist on calling me that?"8
"Because like the good doctor. You've been piece random body arts in to my grand pa. and I the nurse told me your first name is François. And everyone knows Frank is the nickname to François." I folded my arms matter of factly waiting for his rebuttal. But Frank is such a softy that he merely chuckles. I assumed then that he had a big family with lots of children and descendants who would miss him when he was gone. Unlike my grand father who wouldn't be missed at all. Much less by me.9
My grandfather sat up slightly with help of the remote bed to look up at his doctor. Partially bald with pepper gray gray Aloysius Hangweminger was not the most pleased of patients. His beady black eyes surrounded by yellowing withered skin searched the room and criticized all the machines around him. In particular he scrutinized his doctor. I had begun long ago to pay attention to how he posture was with certain people. IF he respected or wanted to fool someone he would sit up straight and smile weakly to seem kind and old. But if someone like the doctor, or me most of the time, he would sty slouching and grumble the entire time.10
It was really annoying when the old bat first got here. All he did was complain about how the staff didn't know what they were doing. Especially when Dr. James (Frankenstein) turned out to be thirty years too young. Grand pa threw a fit. The old man threw machine against the wall and bludgeoned the help. I sat back laughing as he was held down by restraints. It had been hilarious. But of course I was "too young" to be allowed to witness something like that. So the nurses ushered me out to the waiting room and gave me playdoh to occupy me. Right give a driving teenager playdoh. Sometimes I wonder if the old man was right to think them simple. 11
But I sat out their. In truth watching other families in the ward was very exciting. There had been the Fields'. Mrs. Fields had been in to have her third pregnancy. The previous two had, sadly, been failures. The young couple was on its wits end to finally have a family. This time she gave birth.....to sextuplets. Mr. Fields was an executive at a local company and had jumped for joy. He shouted all around the house he was going to buy for his new family. The young blond man had pranced up and down the halls lifting unsuspecting nursemaids off their feet and swinging them around. He came to me lifted me high, singing praises to Jehovah. After the fifth spin I got dizzy. He planted a teary kiss onto my cheek and went to go celebrate with his wife. There's a plaque near the room where the family spent their first night: "Here Miracles Are Made". Whatever the hell that's supposed to mean. I liked that family Right after Mr. Fields had a vasectomy. I guess they had hit the jackpot and were willing to stop12
That had been room 111. Right next door to room 113 had the more appalling story. Mr. Van Dross was in the same state as my grand pa. Both of them just can't let go of the pipe.
