Curiousity Killed The Cat

Walking through the small kitchen heading for the family room, Megan's eyes stopped on the small, open, blue box leaning out of the glass ash tray. 'Why does she smoke them?' She asked herself.1

Megan's mother, who was spending the night at her boyfriends, was a smoker. She had been all of Megan's life, even though she knew it was bad for you, she wanted to know why her mother did it so much.2

She reached for the box but pulled back. She shook her head and continued into the family room, her dogs following at her feet. She fell backwards on to the couch and grabbed the remote and turned the channel to music videos.3

Not listening to the music, Megan grabbed her mother's laptop and opened the internet and went to myspace. She barely paid attention to what she was looking at, her mind was on the pack of cigarettes. 'Why do people like them?' She started asking herself as she watched the computer screen.4

She suddenly stood and walked into the kitchen. She grabbed the pack and opened it. She stared at the cigarettes, slowly taking one out and holding it in between her thumb and index finger. She sighed and shoved it back in the pack, putting it back and paced back-n-forth in the kitchen. Her dogs sitting quietly as their heads followed her.5

Megan stopped and closed her eyes and took and deep breath. She went into her room and dug out her hidden lighter. She never used it, but took it from her mom for no reason at all. She tested it, watching the little flame flick around as she exhaled slowly.6

Turning quickly, she almost tripped over one of her dogs. She got her balance back before she could fall. Sighing, she walked back to the kitchen grabbed the little blue box again. Taking out the cigarette she had taken out before she put the box back and took the lighter and cigarette into the family room. 7

She sat on the couch again, her dogs sat and watched her as she smelled the cigarette. 'Well it sure isn't the smell' She thought. She put the cigarette on her lips, she removed it soon after and looked at it. Then she put it back on her lips and flicked the lighter on, she brought it close to the tip. She lifted her finger of the lighter, the flame disappearing.8

Megan stared at the wall in front of her not seeing it. She remembered she had a conversation about smoking with her friend, she had said that she had wanted to be able to say she had never smoked before all through high school. 'Do I really want to do this?' She asked herself.9

She put the cigarette in place and lit it. She inhaled and blew out the smoke, surprised she didn't cough. She did it again, watching the tip burn. The third time she inhaled to much and as she blew the smoke out, she felt a burn in the back of her throat. She coughed, the taste pasted onto her tongue. She took a few more long drags, soon the taste made her not want to swallow.10

She quickly put the unfinished cigarette out in the ash tray next to her. She swallowed and started to cough, she got up and went into the kitchen, scrambling she found a cup and filled it with water and chugged it down. 11

It calmed the burning but the taste came back quickly, she ran to her room and found her watermelon flavored gum, she started chewing it as soon as it was in her mouth. She closed her eyes and the watermelon over powered the disgusting taste.12

She went back to the ash tray, making sure the cigarette was completely out before dumbing it and the ashes in the trash can. She made sure to cover it with something else, so her mom wouldn't see.13

Megan went back and sat on the couch, the music videos still playing. 'I just don't get it, its not the smell or taste. How do they get addicted to it?' She thought, 'This was a dumb mistake, I didn't learn anything! I'm such an idiot!' She thought to herself as tears started to form in her eyes, but none ever fell.14

Soon the gum lost it's flavor and she threw it out, the taste started to form again on her tongue, this time fainter. Megan took a Mountain Dew out of the fridge and opened in, she took small sips hoping to wash the taste away.15

After about an hour, the taste decrease to a slight tickle in the back of her throat. She had told two of her friends already, both telling her she wasn't dumb because they had both done it too. It didn't make her feel better though, she still wished she could take it back, no matter how curious she had been.16

'Curiousity killed the cat.' She thought as she switched the channel. 17
