Alamaria; My Greatest Adventure Yet: Other World College

1

No one in my village saw this coming, not even I, the daughter of King Moralig himself.2

I didn’t understand why my mother was making me do this retched thing! My father, King Moralig, haven died a few years before not being here to stop her definitely didn’t help. 3

“But muma, I mustn’t acquaint with the outside world! My powers are weakened if I cannot at least see the castle of Barthil!”4

“Alamaria, please don’t argue with me. I am not in the mood. Now go see Tyrell, he has asked of me to send you to him.”5

“What does he need now?”6

“Help gathering the rams.”7

“Fine, but this conversation is far from over.”8

I walk down the village path to Tyrell’s ranch. 9

“Alamaria, Alamaria!” The twins of the village run to me with concerned looks on their faces.10

“Becky. Mary.” I greet them.11

“You can’t leave! Our world won’t be safe without you!”12

“Yes! You are the protector of the Zorak people! Only you can save us from the dangers.”13

“Girls, do not worry, there haven’t been dangers for a few years now. Besides, I’ll be back before you realize it.” I smile, and gently brush the back of my hand across their faces. 14

“But what if something does happen?”15

I pull out the necklace of Oradox I received from a great spirit when only a young child. 16

“I shall know.” 17

I continue walking up the village, past the mayor’s house and through the wooden gate to meet Tyrell outside his stables. 18

“Ah Alamaria, you have come to help me I suppose?”19

“Yes. What is it that I can do for you?” I chuckle. Tyrell is always in some kind of mess.20

“I need you to round up my rams please. I’m already a few minutes late to meet…”21

He stopped in his tracks and looked uncomfortably at me. Then his face turned red. I looked at him with a face of confusion, and then it hit me. He had been admiring a lady in our village by the name of Marli. 22

“No need to explain, I get it.”23

I laughed as I watched him hurry up the path to her house. Love, it’s such a wonderful thing. If only I could fall in love. I don’t think there is a man out there strong enough to handle my life. 24

I called for Ross, my horse, and got the rams into their stables as fast as I could. I wanted to get home and talk to my mom about this whole college thing tonight. 25

“Muma! I’m back!! Can we please talk about this?”26

”Fine, but don’t expect me to change my mind any time soon.” She replied while climbing down from the loft. 27

“Okay,” I took a seat at the kitchen table. “why do I have to go?”28

”I want you to get a good education and live a normal life from now on. No more of these life threatening adventures.”29

“Dad would be proud about the way I handled my last task.”30

“Yes, but he’s not here now is he?”31

“That is so unfair. What good is an education going to do me? I’m a warrior. Besides, what is ‘normal’ anyway? Everyone and everything is different in some way, so you really can’t define the word normal in a way that would satisfy everyone.”32

“You see? You are so smart and you think in a highly intelligent way, now you should put it to good use.”33

“Right, because saving the people of this world is not a good use of my intelligence.”34

“Ala! Please, I will not have this.”35

“I went through what you ‘normal’ people would call high school, that’s plenty of education.”36

“I think you would benefit more if you went to college.”37

“Maybe you shouldn’t visit the other side anymore, people out there are giving you ideas.”38

“Well, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if everyone here weren’t afraid to acquaint with them.”39

“Excuse me! If we weren’t afraid? The people out there would treat us as creatures if they knew about us! I’ve seen how they treat unusual things. We would be just another project for them to ridicule and humiliate. It’s not us that are afraid of accepting something different, it’s them.”40

“Then why not try college? Get an education, get a job…”41

“My ‘job’ is to protect my people. I was sworn to do that from the day I was born.”42

“I as your mother am telling you what is best for you.”43

“My father would NEVER approve of this. What if someone finds out? I’m done for, everyone here is done for. I’m not risking it.”44

“You risk your life fighting creatures out there when you need to, and you’re not going to do something as simple as learn more then what you know?” 45

“I am not a thing, a creature, or a freak, none of us are. Why do you want us to be classified as that? We are all happy here.”46

“I’m not talking about everyone else, I’m talking about you.”47

“I am alive to protect my friends and family, and those in need here in our world. I can’t leave. What if the ‘Dread’ comes back?”48

“How dare you speak of that in my house?” 49

“Because I’m not afraid of anything! But I’m not going to be humiliated!”50

“That seems like you’re afraid to be humiliated.”51

“No, I just have self respect, and take pride in being who and what I am. Maybe you should try.”52

I storm out of the house and to the edge of the garden where the doorway to the other side awaits. I peep out. The doorway is located on top a rocky hill they call a mountain. The lights down there are beautiful and taunting, but I have to stay and keep my people safe. 53

I live in a bungalow behind my mothers house. It’s where I keep my armor and souvenirs from my battles. Slowly I climb into my bed and wait for sleep to take me under it’s spell. 54

This is kind of an interesting premise. I like the idea of living in a presumably magical world with the option of going to a "normal" college in a world like ours. She's very adament about protecting her people - I wonder how this will all resolve itself. Nice job with this beginning - I hope you choose to continue it! Best of luck to you and welcome to Storywrite!
