How about some of these idea's

1) Write something serious and controversary. Like the empeachment of our Illinois governor. Rights of Gays. The election of Obama as president.1

2) Write something very emotional. Detail it in great detail. Really get into it. Say a person dying of cancer, aids, leukemia. Make it a child if you want to.2

3) Write something dealing with a reunion of some kind. Say lovers who were separated because of war... illness... something and then out of the blue they find each other again. 3

4) Write a follow up story on say 9-1-1. Write about a fire department recovering from the deaths of most of their crew on the day of 911.4

Write about a family who lost someone on that day. A father, lover, brother. Make it heart wrenching.5

Write about what is being done to remember those people. And how it is being done.6

5) Write a letter to a lover telling them how much you love and miss them. Have the lover be in the military serving in Iraq.7

Just some idea's to show how flexible you are in writing. I wanted you to be able to show that you can write facts. Emotion. And even respectful of other religions, races, and sexual orientation.8

Hope some of these idea's will help you.9

Good luck.10

Glad that you liked it. I was thinking along the lines of say you wanted to become a newspaper writer what kind of things would they want to see you write.

I think they would want to see a variety of different things. I hope this helps.
