Joanie Excerpt

So now everyone knows I am a complete loser!3

I mean, who can forget a girl dressed up as a pawn, dancing in front of the school for showcase assembly? To Romanian techno beat? I'm glad I don't care about my dignity that much, or else I would slowly die inside from the social mockery. 4

I still have to hear the comments when they see Chess Club posters on the wall. "Oh remember that crazy girl..." I just imagine them all thinking as they laugh. 5

But not everyone laughs. 6

Some people actually thought it was funny (in the good way): hillarious, even! A few stragglers come to some meetings, but none of them stay for too long. Its an encouragement though, an encouragement to see that people know what chess club is and that they are even are beginning to see it like we do. That its a fun game that deserves notice. 7

I really didn't expect anyone to take it as seriously as it became for some. Like, now there are some adamant fans for chess club, some who see it as a way to bring an end to discrimination in High School. 8

And then there's the Lacrosse team. 9

      lolz. here's how it goes:

There’s lots of people out there. I take a peek behind the curtains, adjusting the circular cardboard thing on my head (really, I don’t know what it is, except that it’s supposed to resemble a pawn’s top), and wonder again just why I’m doing this. Right. For the name of Chess. And a bit for Chao, too.
We’re one of the first acts. Ana pulled out her Arsenium single of Rumadai, and has been proudly showing it to me in the time we wait. Maybe the techno will calm my heart that’s just about to explode right now. At least it’s worth a shot.
I hear a mentioning of the name Chess Club. There’s a few snickers, I’d guess jocks. Probably. Maybe. Then the techno comes in, and Arsenium’s high voice singing:
Everybody dance in the disco, rumadai!
That’s when I’m supposed to walk out. For once in my life, my legs waver and I feel some doubt. I’ve never flung my dignity out this far, with so many witnesses. For once, I don’t want people to laugh at me. I just want some friends, dang it. That’s really not supposed to be such a big demand.
“Good luck, Joanie!” Ana gives me a wave, and next to her, Chao gives me a grin and a thumbs up. I can do this. I do have friends backing me up. I probably won’t gain any friends out of doing this, but I can’t lose the ones I’ve got. We geeks have to stick together.
My first steps on stage aren’t too good. I’m losing the beat and I can already hear the snickers as I get to the center of the stage and start waving my finger across the crowd. I can hardly see in this stupid costume, but the one good thing about being on stage is that the crowd is impossible to see. Stage lights, stupid costume, being too afraid to look. Yah.
It gets better when I hear Ana, Chao and Patrick’s steps from the side stages. Stepping with the beat, they line up on either side of me and dance along, each of them wearing their Chess team jackets. It took a bit of persuation to get Patrick to do this, but Ana and Chao were fine with it. No matter how much we said, we couldn’t get Malik to do it. So he watched from the back stage and missed out on the amazing Romanian dance.
There are still some laughs, but they’re the good kind of laughs. The kind we were trying to get. The “that is so random that it is cool” kind of laugh. I like it. I like how it’s the five of us (Malik with us in spirit, of course), all united for a cause, all not caring how stupid we look: just dancing to Romanian techno in front of the school and having fun doing it. It’s one of those moments you never want to forget, that gives you a euphoria whenever you think about it.
We dance just like Arsenium in his music video: fingers across the crowd, and back, clap hands, left hand out, right hand out, move them back and forth, sway to one side, sway to the other…yah. Ana made it her job to shove the music video down our throats, and get us to memorize the simple dance to the point of being able to perform it in our sleep.
The techno beat simplifies and we file off stage. Wow, that was quick. Before Ana leaves, she cheers, “Go Romania!” Once we’re back stage, I see that she’s beaming in the face. She must have practiced all week to get the courage to say that in front of the student body. We all smile a bit when we hear the loud, enthusiastic applause explode from the audience. Never did we expect such a positive response, but we weren’t gonna question it. Even Malik has a bit of a smile on his face. Probably just amusement at seeing us make fools of ourselves, but whatever. I know the crowd’s loud cheers encourages him too. He just doesn’t want to admit it.
“Wow, we did it.” Chao looks to the front stage, watching the next club perform. They go for the serious approach, like actually intelligently explaining what their club does and why one should join. It goes without saying they don’t get as positive of a response as we did. “We’re getting somewhere with this whole Chess thing. Maybe. Hopefully.” The excitement spills from his eyes, and I can’t help but feel the excitement of the moment too.
“Well first, we have to go through doing that again, three more times, for the rest of the showcase assemblies,” I remind him, though my smile shows him I’m hardly able to wait to see Chess Club’s future either.
