"You're never getting out of here until I get what you want you hear me? Never!" 1

The old witch slammed the door. Locking me in darkness once again. I stuck out my tongue. I didn't care. I just ywaned and went back to sleep like I always did. Like I have been for twenty years.2

The scribe gave me a weird look, "Sorry Princess but that don't sound right at all. Who's this witch I thought we were talking about how you and lover boy met?"10

"We are." My hands smooth my skirt politely. "but I have to start at the beginning. The very Beginning."11

The squat little man bit his quill and rolled his eyes as I began again...12

13

It had all started before I was born. My father and Mother, king and queen at the time, had been trying had to have a baby. And they couldn't. You know how the story goes. They searched the entire kingdom for fairies and medicine men to help. But none knew magic powerful enough to conjure up a child. So they lost hope.14

"Oh William!" My dramatic mother had said. "There's no hope. You might as well sleep with my sister. I'm no good!" The poor woman ran over and locked herself in her room. Now my father wasn't that bright of a man, but he had enough smarts not to sleep with my Aunt Linda (who despite her name was quite unfortunate looking). So he went out on his own and soured the edges of the kingdom for any means that his wife might bare a child.15

Then he met Ellesmere. 16

And she gave him the means. For a price. Within days my mother was puking her guts out with joy. And later on down the road I was born. During those blissful regurgitating months, my father forgot all about his promise to the witch, who didn't. And on my naming day he remember.17

The old coot whispered the technicality into my mother's ear.
Remember when I told you my father wasn't too bright. Well, apparently he's not good at bargaining either. My mother had been livid. She cried and threw things, and cried and threw things, and cried more while throwing other stuff.18

And I was sent to live with the witch.
