Face in the Mirror

A man walks these streets without a gleam of hope in his eyes1

He just longs for the day this world will pass him by2

Every face along this street he neither acknowledges or sees3

but when one recognizes him, he pays them no heed4

At home the scene is no different, he doesn't even recognize himself5

All of his dreams and wishes; all of his aspirations collect dust on the shelf6

He looks into the mirror, and then questions aloud7

"Oh my dear James, how about came that dark cloud?"8

And without warning, to his dismay, a voice answered back, all the truth in which it would say9

"Dear James, how can you inquire of such things?10

It's been with yourself that you've been having the greatest fling"11

With a fright, he jumps back from the sight of the face12

A man trapped in the mirror, which did not belong in this place13

In awe and wonder, James looks deep into the glass14

Stepping slightly forward until he no longer saw his own mass15

There he was, wearing a sneer along with evil eyes that shone16

And when his voice rang out, in its echo was a hungry tone17

"Who are you and from where do you come?"18

"Ah, good question, though I only appear after I have been shunned19

By you, none the less, when you closed of the doors,20

when you set aside all thoughts and lived like a stone in this world"21

"Still, my query of you has gone with no proclaim22

And of why have answered? How does one know my name?"23

"Your questions you have answers for, if only you knew24

But I guess it's what happens after you pick up the booze25

You're a foolish man for thinking and for living this life26

Yet, you long for death, but find no courage to die27

I am here to facilitate your death, to help along, so to speak28

Reflect we will on what's happened, what's to become, and what lies at your feet"29

"I know all there is to know, what has happened before30

I know of what is to become, but still I think there is more"31

"Foolish lad, you've thrown all of it away,32

from the love of your life to the family in their graves33

Must you be reminded of your heinous acts?34

Surely, you remember, or should I bring up all of that?"35

The man falls to his knees, shaking in the wake36

as all the memories start flowing, no drugs around for his sake37

Laughing, the face in the mirror continues on with his speech38

"Not man enough to stand on your feet?39

How about when you pushed all those friends away?40

Or better yet, the ones you found loyal but you betrayed?41

How about the family who loved you, the brother and sister who cared?42

Do you still recount the burden you were and how you left them bare?"43

James looks up into the mirror, the face laughing harder than ever44

He knew he was right; every word of fact, and it was now or never45

He found the spot, dragged with him a stool to stand and reach46

He made one end in a noose, and tied the other to the highest peak47

Atop the stool he stood, and with one last sigh, he tipped it over48

Now swaying in the middle of the room was the dead James Rover
