Against Abortion? What For?

(NOTE: The following is my opinion, but by all means take it personally and attack my views. I've always wanted hate mail and I can't wait to decimate your arguments. )1

Honestly, I don't understand you people who are against abortion. There are so many reasons why abortion should be legal. For one, it's not murder. To prove it to you, I looked it up.2

Murder: The unlawful killing of one human by another, especially with premeditated malice.3

Next I looked up Killing.4

Killing: an event that causes someone to die, the act of terminating a life5

Then I looked up Born. 6

Born: Brought into life by birth, brought into existence7

Now I just proved that abortion, according to definition, is legal. How you ask? Okay, to murder someone you must kill them, to kill you must take a life, and how can you take a life from an unborn child if, by the definition of 'born' and the object of abortion, it hasn't even been brought to life yet? You can't kill a non-living thing, you can't kill a sneaker or table, how can you kill an unborn child?8

Another argument the 'pro-life' people use (that I've heard anyway), is that the child-to-be that the mother wants to abort could be something great or help make this world a better place. Really? I broke down the odds of this happening using experience and some sort of math.9

There is a 85% chance that your child will be some average guy/girl.10

There is a 14% chance your child will become a killer/thief/rapist or some other criminal and make this world worse.11

There is a 1% chance that your child will make this world better. 12

You may consider me cruel and heartless, but if my percentagaes weren't at least a little correct, no one would work in cubicles, the prisons wouldn't be full to bursting, and world hunger and war would be fairy tales. 13

Let's apply these odds to something else, like gambling. If you only had a 1% chance of getting more then you went in with, you'd be considered a gambling addict to go for it. So why gamble on a child?14

Also, people that really don't want kids, probably won't make good parents. You can't force someone to be a parent, it will most likely end badly for the parent and child.15

Lastly, unborn children are like parasites. They steal nutrients from the mother, cause extreme pain, have to be removed forcefully or by surgery and the body's immune system even tries to KILL it. I would understand if some mother-to-be wanted that out of her.16

So, in conclusion, if any woman wanted to remove a pain causing, parasitical, low-odds-at-becoming-anything-useful-to-society unborn thing growing in her body, let her. 17

By the way, I do not hate humanity.

Please please please provide your opinion. It would be much appricheated.

Your dictionary definition argument holds no weight because, surprise, the dictionary is not the ultimate source of all knowledge nor is it the absolute authority on the meaning of human life
Besides, if you really want a definition to ponder on try this one:
    Life:
the condition that distinguishes organisms from inorganic objects and dead organisms, being manifested by growth through metabolism, reproduction, and the power of adaptation to environment through changes originating internally.
Well, guess what? A fetus fits the definition of 'life'. Not that it matters, the dictionary is not an all knowing super-being.
You also go on to compare a fetus to a sneaker or a table. Well, tell me this, can a sneaker grow? does a table require nutrients to survive? Do either of them have their own, functioning, bodily systems? No. Does a fetus? Yes. Does this make it a living thing? Yes.
Now, about those odds. There is a 1% chance of a person making anything of himself, you say? how about this; there is a 100% percent chance of a person being a human being. Just because someone’s life doesn't change the world in a profound way doesn't mean it isn't worth living. Just because the parents won't make a profit on their kid doesn't make that child's life worthless.
BTW, a fetus is not a parasite. humans are not a parasitic species. In fact, the woman's entire body is designed specifically to grow a person inside of them, so stop acting as though pregnancy is gross and unnatural; it is the most natural thing in the world.
Really, abortion is the unnatural thing. Let's face it, a woman's entire body changes, from her uterus to the hormones in her brain, conditioning her to facilitate the baby's growth until birth. If the baby suddenly disappears, don't you think that would screw with the woman's body? Don't you think that would mess up her hormones?
    Really?

First off, I want to say I love your counterarguments love. Even though you negated your definition of 'life', the rest of your argument was well written, and completely right.

      Except...

I am a very cynical, cruel person. So if a child will just end up being a drain on society, it doesn't need to live. But that brings up the question, how would we know if a child will grow up to be useful?

      I know I know, we don't.

So in light of your counterargument, I denounce my earlier stance on abortion.

Instead, if by age 35 a person with the means to do so has not given anything to society, he or she shall be executed.

And giving birth to a child does not count.

  • i totally agree.

Wow, nicely put. A lttile bit harsh in the end, bit you're point is till err, valid none the less. And you are so right about the whole percentage thing, even though its such a horrible system for our society to have. Great use of the definitions too, i might add.

Thanks for your comment and honesty. Wish I could put the story in the "Featured Stories" list, but alas, don't have the points.
