The harlequin effect

I knew it was only a legend, and I knew I was probably going to be disappointed but I did it anyway. I knew my everyone would be angry when I got back but now was my only chance, it could be a while until the next rainbow.1

My eyes were glued to it's colourful rays. It almost made me hysterical and sometimes I swore giggles escaped my lips. 2

"Eris?!" Theo called.3

I stopped, Theo could be stern sometimes but he was really gentle and kind.4

"Over here Theo!" I yelled back. 5

I heard his hurried footsteps draw closer behind me. I started walking again. 6

"What are you doing?" Theo asked, puzzled.7

"Following the rainbow," I replied, hysterically, the word rainbow was hilarious.8

"There isn't anything at the end!" He replied dryly.9

"Oh but I want to see" I said brightly, putting my face right infront of him, staring into his earthy brown eyes.10

He sighed. I grinned stupidly at him. 11

We'd walked for hours, Ray had come after Theo hadn't come back. Ray had run back like he was susposed to, I didn't know why Theo had even stayed. Atleast I had company.12

"Eris, Eris! the rainbow is fading!" He yelled.13

I gasped. No, this couldn't happen, we'd come so far. I began to run, so fast that the trees were a blur of brown and green. I could hear Theo calling for me, he was lagging behind. I raced against the rainbow, I just knew there was something at the end. 14

I just didn't excactly know what it was.15

The amount of trees began to thin, I could see flickering bursts of colour. I forced my legs to go faster. I was breathing so fast. My head pounded, I felt the blood pump in my veins. I burst out of the trees and stood before flickering flames, all different colours. In my brain the pounding got faster, it hurt, badly, then something suddenly clicked. I smiled stupidly. Theo caught up with me, he was doubled over panting.16

"How..how could you run so fast?" He asked.17

"I don't know," I droned, still staring into the fire.18

The rainbow began to disappear more slowly, I looked at Theo, his golden eyes were entranced with flickering flames. I sat closely to the flames looking at the flames, not taking my eyes off of her. Minutes later Theo sat next to me. We sat staring into the flames until the rainbow completely disappeared. 19

Night had fell as the rainbow had diasppeared into the flames, rays of coloured lights beamed into the dark starry sky and the flames made one last burst and disappeared. The world turned to black and disappeared.20

I sat up to see the light blue morning sky and tinged with the orange of the rising sun.
