Promises

Promises are a dangerous thing to make because most of them can't be kept, no matter the sincere sentiment poured into them. 1

"I won't let anything happen to you."2

"I will never leave you."3

"I will never stop loving you."4

In my experience, these words, while said in love, usually only serve to hurt in the end. In situations where one is tempted to utter them, it seems better to show than to tell. While words can be a beautiful means of expressing an end, they can also fail. They often do.

Interesting and well-written. Although I agree that promises should never be made lightly, and needless to say, not dishonestly - I can't say I exactly agree with the statement that most promises can't be kept. I guess it's just a fact that people often make rash promises when swept away on a wave of emotion. ... Anyhow, I think you are right that it's better to show than to tell. After all, actions really do speak louder than words.
    Good job! Enjoyed the read

So very very true. I look back now in my old diaries and love letters and have lost count of how many times my ex bf said that he would love me forever and he promised there would be noone else. Pah! I never tell anyone I promise unless I know I can truly do so. Good write.

Same here. (: And look at it this way...at least you have love letters to look at.

Wonderfully accurate! Especially since many people say these things when they only think they're in love but are only infatuated. And yeah, these are certainly promises that even when you're truly in love are hard to keep because circumstances beyond your control often keep people from them. The saddest thing, as you said, is they do wind up hurting in the end.

I agree with this whole piece, but especially this line: "In my experience, these words, while said in love, usually only serve to hurt in the end." It's a well written line, and completely true. Good job.

when you make the promise you feel it and you really think you can keep it. but we are only humans and we are bound to fail but the important thing is that even for a momment we want to love and keep someone safe. That`s all that matters.

That's true too, I think. It all depends on your point of view and your experiences I guess.

Thank you. This is a beautiful piece, which captures *exactly* what I wanted people to enter into this contest. It made me smile more than anything I've seen today in this contest. The very best of luck to you.

    Very true.

I tend to think much along the same lines. A lot of people promise things that they can't do, like ensure one's safety, and others promise things they won't do.

I really don't see much difference between promises and lies, except promises are much prettier.
