INTRODUCTION2

Of all the legends of different Shape-Shifters in the world, it is apparent that Vampires have the one of the longest and most varied history of a supernatural species.3

When SSIT - Supernatural Scientific Investigative Team - first began to look into the Vampire in parts of Eastern Europe, the first Vampire species to become known was the European Vampire. Then as the investigation deepened, more and more legends, superstitions and stories based on historical and/ or cultural fact of this type of Shape-Shifter, became known. It turned apparent that Vampires like humans, differ culturally and biologically as humans do in different locations on Earth. However the common trait in this supernatural area is that Vampires are Shape-Shifters; because in their transition to the Vampiric ‘other’, their human forms can and do morph into differing supernatural shapes.4

With the case of Werewolves, their Shape-Shifter DNA could be linked to one genetic forefather ‘The First Werewolf’, which was a hot-blooded predator located back to the Paleolithic Age. As discussed in the introduction of the SSIT Report on Different Breeds of Werewolves, the ‘First Werewolf’ had many similar physical characteristics to its prehistoric cousins of carnivorous dinosaurs such as the Raptor. However the true origins of Vampire DNA are much harder to track, due to the range of cultural differences of ‘the cause’ of becoming a Vampire in each legend around the globe.5

What makes the Vampire a Shape-Shifter is the dramatic change that can mutate normal living flesh into a state of a near biological death; or scientifically put, some Vampire’s human bodies enter a kind of biological ‘stasis’ which shuts down many of their normal bodily functions. This permanent paralysis of particular human functions may heighten certain physical abilities but it will also decrease others to the point of necrotizing the flesh. By the mutation of human organs into their Vampire form, some Vampires have the ability to change from a human appearance to their other form, when either engaged in hunting or combat. With other species of Vampires, once humans have been contaminated and then changed into the Vampire; undergo a complete transformation from human to their Vampire bodies that it is sometimes impossible to look human once more.6

Interestingly many Vampires share the same genetically encoded traits as Werewolves or other Shape-Shifter’s such as certain humanoids who can change their physical forms. The two most common traits found in nearly all of the Vampire species and their Shape-Shifting relatives, are the ‘bloodlust’ which is the overpowering hunger or thirst to either eat fresh flesh or drink fresh blood; and the allergy to silver. 7

Many Vampire species are also allergic to garlic. This is because the unique combination of vitamins, minerals and other chemicals found in garlic results in a side-effect which can thin the blood. Vampires encounter great difficulty regulating their blood since many of their internal organs that normally do this in a human body, are either no longer functioning or functioning properly. Due to this, imbibing garlic or any kind of drug or plant which effects the thickening or the thinning of blood, is detrimental to a species whose health is solely based on the principle of never changing. However if a Vampire is poisoned by garlic or another plant or drug, they can regenerate by drinking human or Werewolf blood.8

By Vampires drinking the blood of their chosen prey, it becomes apparent that they take on many of their victims physical traits. What is a benefit but still needs further investigating into this matter by SSIT, is that we have been advised by the Lokoti Werewolves that if a European Vampire should feed on a human with ESP; they also develop this unusual ability. Werewolves as well as Vampires can differentiate a psychic human from a non-psychic human, by their differing bio-electromagnetic field which is also called their aura. It is by honing in on the human with the aura, they hunt psychics for their uncanny talent.9

The Vampire’s urge to feed on fresh blood or other biological matter, is similar to the Werewolf’s bloodlust to feed on fresh flesh because this hunger is attributed to their most basic survival instinct. If a Werewolf (this trait is the same in all the Werewolf breeds investigated) should eat ‘bad meat’ i.e. flesh from a corpse which has been dead for over 24 hours so decomposition had begun, or even if the human is ill; then this can affect the health of the creature just as if a human ate animal that was infected with a debilitating bacteria such as Salmonella. On this premise, most species of Vampires must feed on fresh blood from a healthy being as it can and does affect their health and therefore their longevity.10

Many English and European background cultures term Vampires (or the species of Vampires known to them) as the ‘undead’. As this term is scientifically impossible to replicate in the natural or the supernatural world, one can however relegate this term loosely to particular Vampire species. As a Vampire’s human organs undergo a change to become stronger, other organs became damaged and ergo useless. However, humans who have been changed into Vampires still do have a heart rate, pulse and therefore breathe, which in turn enables their bodily movements by transporting the blood to their muscles. But by the change of human to Vampire, the many medical drawbacks are numerous which in turn, is partly responsible for their need to feed on fresh blood.11

Another superstition about Vampires which needs to be quashed is that other than being termed as ‘undead’; that there is the notion that Vampires are immortal. This is scientifically impossible due to the fact that not even our current Universe is immortal. With differing scientific groups such as NASA; otherwise proving with their work with astronomy or physics on matter, anti-matter, dark matter, atoms and molecules, with the ‘The Big Bang’ as well as ‘The Big Crunch’; very little let alone biological matter can be deemed to be ‘immortal’ or everlasting. Energy cannot be destroyed however it simply changes form; this scientific fact can be applied to biological beings and even Shape-Shifters such as Vampires.12

Many Vampires do have a supernaturally long existence due to a successful feeding pattern. But what became obvious in this scientific report was that for many Vampire species, if their feeding pattern was not successful then neither was the longevity of the subject. This can be said for many biological species including animals or humans in the natural world. If the living conditions are plentiful in providing for the life-form, then the life-form will flourish. However if food or other necessary elements to ensure survival are not available, then the life form may either change to adapt to their environmental conditions or perish.13

Vampires maintain an ambient body temperature, depending on their environmental conditions. This means that they do not sweat from hot weather which the benefit to this, is it is almost impossible for them to suffer from hypothermia. With this said, Vampires can still encounter physical injury from frost bite although they would not feel discomfort from the cold. This means that some Vampires do not experience all physical sensations, with half of their central nerve system also in suspended animation. With this in mind, Vampires are very wary of what they touch as they must be careful not to damage their flesh even if they do not always feel it.14

By a Vampire’s body existing in a semi-state of biological stasis, as their flesh may not age or change, another drawback to this is that they encounter a great deal of difficulty in healing from physical injury. There are only two ways a Vampire may heal itself after physical harm; by drinking either human or Werewolf blood, with the latter their preferred drink of choice. Because of this, particular species of Vampires such as the European Vampire, have extensively hunted Werewolves primarily the European Werewolf. When they drink from this other supernatural creature, for up to 7 days they take on the Werewolf’s physical attributes such as their greater strength and their powerful regenerative ability.15

With this said, the same is applied when Vampires drink human blood. By drinking healthy human blood then the Vampire is able to replenish its protein, vitamins, minerals, sugar-level, white cell count, red cell count and anti-bodies. However should the Vampire drink blood from a decomposing body or a human with an illness, this can severely weaken them and in some cases lead to their demise. 16

Since a Vampire experiences such hurdles of constantly maintaining their physical health, another myth in popular culture that states Vampires are allergic to sunlight needs to be re-examined. As Vampires skin, flesh and bone must be continually hydrated by drinking fresh blood, they are photosensitive to bright light and in particular Ultraviolet rays. Humans encounter sunburn every day and from this exposure they can naturally heal by their healthy skin cells. However because Vampires cannot naturally heal by their own accord, their skin is unable to replace the damaged cells. Vampires will not turn to dust from exposure to sunlight but they cannot heal from sunburn unless they drink human or Werewolf blood.17

By examining the different species of Vampire, SSIT barely scratched the surface of this global phenomenon. However with the subjects of differing species of Vampires in this report, it shows just how polymorphic this supernatural creature can be. Each different species of Vampire that was investigated, differed physically by either appearance, dietary requirements, longevity and living conditions. Another important note was how humans or even other biological forms could be turned into ‘Vampire’ by different causes. It is due to this, that the true origin of ‘Vampire’ cannot be traced to one pure source. The only thing that can be certain when investigating this fascinating paranormal phenomenon, was from the altering of human DNA, is the Vampire a part of the Shape-Shifting category. 18

On a humorous note, from a brush over the subject of Vampirism in Wikipedia, there are people in the Balkans who believe and even documented that they have Vampire Pumpkins and/ or Watermelons. The symptoms of the vegetable are trembling, growling and ‘blood’ appearing on the epidermis of the fruit or vegetable. Scientifically speaking, the ‘blood’ can be explained as excreted vegetable decay and fungus, ironically which is of a red colour. Apparently in this folklore there are two ways this fruit and vegetable can become a Vampire. The first, is if the fruit or vegetable is left outside on the night of a full moon and the second; is if the fruit or vegetable is kept more than 10 days after Christmas. The first reason also leans towards Werewolf legends with the supernatural affected by the lunar cycle. The second reason crosses into the subject of religion and how Vampires can sometimes be called ‘The Damned’.19

Religious implications on Vampires is minimal nor does religion have any scientific effect on this species of Shape-Shifter. In this scientist’s view, religion is a folklore itself and is generally used to either inspire false hope or to try to explain the unexplainable; however my partner on SSIT Elisha Baker, agrees to disagree on this matter with her ever-present crucifix that is worn around her neck. Holy Water and crucifixes to do not work to ward off or injure the Vampires that SSIT investigated. On this note, Vampires can certainly attack human religious figures as well as freely enter a church, and set foot on sacred or consecrated ground. When SSIT investigated European Vampires for instance, we interviewed many members of the community in several different Eastern European countries. We encountered several stories of how humans had escaped a Vampire attack by the use of crucifixes as well as by running into a church. 20

When we asked the witnesses to show us the crucifixes, we found that they were in jewelry form and were in fact made of silver. Then we asked to see the church which the subjects had found safety in, to find the buildings had unkempt cemeteries surrounding them. As the up-keep on the said cemetery was not immaculate, this caused the grass to grow long and flowering weeds to appear. Two of these weeds were not in fact weeds, but upon closer examination there were smatterings of flowering garlic stalks as well as ‘Wolf’s Bane’, Arnica Montana that in certain locations in Europe grows abundantly. ‘Wolf’s Bane’ can be used for human medicinal purposes but if used incorrectly, it can cause severe gastroenteritis and even internal bleeding of the intestinal tract. These symptoms can be deadly to Vampires and even injure a Werewolf. With this evidence in mind, SSIT concluded that the European Vampires broke off their differing pursuits, due to the fact silver or because of the flora that was present, when the humans sought sanctuary.21

From examining the many differing legends of the Vampire, the idea that Vampires can also change into animals such as a bat or a wolf, can be allocated to their mutated cellular structure being members of the Shape-Shifter genetic ‘family’. However on this note, SSIT when investigating the European Vampire, North American Vampire, South American Vampire and West African Vampire; did not find any evidence that these Vampires could alter their shapes in such a way. The Vampires that SSIT investigated and gathered factual data and biological evidence, always retained a humanoid form. SSIT did another investigation on Shape-Shifters from Africa, India, Asia and the Americas, on beings who were not Vampires nor were Werewolves, but who were able to completely alter their shape into animals.22

The prior example of the ‘Vampire Pumpkin or Watermelon’, of how a fruit or vegetable may have characteristics of a supernatural creature, goes to show how sometimes the term ‘Vampire’ can be used to define in psychoanalytical terms of the ‘other’. This is generally feared as it hovers on the boundaries of the known and the unknown universe. Indeed by investigating the global legends of the Vampire, SSIT encountered stories of when a human was simply born different i.e. were albino or had red hair and this was even called Vampire by some cultures. By allowing fear to breed by simply not being able to understand something, easily results in stories to tell children when you tuck them into bed at night. It is through investigation and collecting observable facts that can truth be found and taught properly instead. 23

EUROPEAN VAMPIRE24

~Physical Characteristics~25

WARNING – This species of Vampire has poisonous fangs which can kill humans.26

When a European Vampire changes from human to their Vampire form, their eyes turn completely white and their upper canine teeth become long and sharp like the fangs on a snake. This species of Vampire has venom that is secreted by the fangs which is deadly to humans and it can paralyze Werewolves. The nails on the Vampire’s hands can become longer and sharper, although not as strong as claws on other supernatural beings. This means their elongated nails can pierce human tissue however they can break on harder substances like on clothing such as denim or leather. 27

The strength of a European Vampire is ten times that of a human. Although their physical strength is significantly less than a Werewolf’s, European Vampires can move faster. European Vampires have supernaturally fast reflexes which can be measured at the same rate as the speed of sound. However European Vampires are unable to maintain this speed by running long distances, but they are able to use this by jumping heights equivalent to four story buildings.28

European Vampire’s longevity is one of the longest in the supernatural world; with a lifespan typically reaching 500 years old. It was foretold when interviewing one European Vampire subject that there was a member of his species was surpassing his 600th Birthday although our investigators were unable to contact, meet and examine this individual. It was explained that the said individual was able to obtain his great age from successfully hunting to prolong his strength, regenerative ability and longevity. 29

On this note, in the European Vampire species, members were found to have direct contact with Werewolves to aid in their physical as well as medical short comings. Once a human has been turned into a European Vampire, many of their bodily functions enter a type of biological stasis or become dormant to almost necrotized standards. As Werewolves may age and die with their longevity differing depending on the breed; it can be seen that the European Vampire does not age but it can still expire due to the passing of time. If a European Vampire is successful in its feeding pattern on fresh blood, the Vampire can reach 500 years or perhaps longer. However if a European Vampire cannot feed on fresh blood at least once a week, then their metabolic system, strength and life expectancy fails.30

European Vampires appear to exist precariously on a double-edged sword as their supernatural state can bring many benefits but just as many downfalls. As their bodies are entered into a form of biological stasis, they do not age and can maintain the same appearance for all of their existence. To some this can be a vain benefit, however the medical repercussions of this type of existence are plentiful. As mentioned previously, Vampires do breathe and they have a heart beat which in turn moves the blood around their bodies to ensure motor function of their ligaments. However from the almost suspended state their bodies enter, their heart beat dramatically decreases which means European Vampires encounter difficulty with strenuous physical activity. Also on this note, this species is required to spend a significant portion of their time in a suspended/ slumbering state to conserve their energy. 31

The idea in certain fictitious books or movies of Vampires turning to dust from either exposure to the sun or from a wooden stake to the heart; may be attributed to a Vampire’s rapid decomposition when it can be clinically called dead. Vampires like all Shape-Shifters are severely allergic to silver; they can be killed instantly by either a silver weapon to the heart or by decapitation. As their bodies were already partially shut down from the moment they were turned into Vampires, their rate of cellular decay is rapid with a drying effect. Even their skeletons are broken down to basic components in minimal time with only a biological ‘ash’ left. The full decay of a European Vampire has been recorded in 7 days, when SSIT was studying its decapitated body. 32

European Vampires hunt Werewolves using not only their greater speed (especially when handling silver weapons to wound and to capture their meal); but they also have an excellent sense of smell. European Vampires can smell Werewolves by the potent pheromones they release and if there is a Werewolf in a 100 km radius they will track it with a 99.9% success rate.33

~History~34

The history of the European Vampire is ancient and can be found in texts that come from BC – Before Christ – in several different European and Middle Eastern countries. Most notably Ancient Greek and Imperial Roman texts horrified humans then as they can today, of tales of either Gods, Demons or monsters that had Vampiric tendencies as well as qualities. The bloodlust then as it does today can come in different shapes and forms by differing feeding and/ or hunting patterns. Logically speaking, it is not surprising to see how European Vampires have evolved just as humans have, as they are a life form too albeit a supernatural one.35

In the medieval ages and then during the European Witch Hunts, witnessed two of the greatest upheavals for European Vampires. Traditionally this successful hunter that has qualities similar to a parasite, have preyed on the rich to pay their way through the ages. Not only did hunting the wealthy fill their purses however the rich were considered safer to drink with less sickness than the poorer classes. But during the medieval ages and then again during the Witch Hunts, European Vampires had to hide their supernatural profiles to avoid being destroyed by religious authorities.36

During the medieval time period in the mountainous areas of Eastern Europe, there were many battles with European Werewolves. The wars were caused from European Vampires hunting the European Werewolves to excess with the volatile beasts rebelling against their predators. The battles became so public that it caught the attention of both the Roman and the Orthodox Catholic churches who were predominantly the authorities at the time. As the numbers of human victims who were caught in the supernatural cross-fire continued to grow, church-empowered Knights, Sheriffs and other Noblemen became involved. As there were too many witnesses to deal with, the European Vampires slipped into secrecy and continued to hunt Werewolves and humans on the sly.37

It was also during the Witch Hunts that European Vampires began to hunt Witches and other humans that exhibited ESP. Vampires at first became entranced by these humans for their auras which are caused by their higher bio-electromagnetic fields. However, as soon as Vampires learned that ESP meant these humans displayed either telepathy, telekinetic, pyrokinetic or successful prophesizing the past or future; these humans were put on the Vampire’s menu. Not only did humans with ESP now have to hide themselves from Church Inquisitors, they also had to defend themselves against Vampires who began to purposefully hunt them as they did with Werewolves. The Witches then began to create protective spells and charms made from silver or garlic or ‘Wolf’s Bane’ to keep the predators away, which on the positive side, also ended up keeping the wolves at bay. Werewolves are not allergic to garlic but they are severely allergic to silver, which in turn protected the Witches from an attack by this other supernatural monster.38

By feeding on humans with ESP, the European Vampires were able to absorb many of their psychic abilities. It is conjectured that this how the fable of Vampires and in particular, European Vampires are able to charm their victims. By adapting their new psychic ability to their hunting pattern, the European Vampires were able to seduce their victims into either be led back to the European Vampire’s coven to be fed on; or hypnotize their victims into blindly following the European Vampire’s will for other purposes. 39

~Reproduction / Mating Habits~40

European Vampires cannot reproduce by sexual means, or create vampire children due to the fact that their reproductive organs are shut down on the transformation into Vampire. As European Vampire bodies are in a biological ‘stasis’, so too are the areas of their bodies required for procreation. Due to this, European Vampires reproduce by infecting others with their Vampire blood.41

When a European Vampire changes a human into a member of their species, this is done by the human drinking the blood of the Vampire. The transformation can take anywhere between 1 - 7 days, depending on the amount of blood that was transferred. If the human changing into a European Vampire was done deliberately, the human’s transformation usually takes 24 hours and the new need to feed on blood is immediate once the change is complete. 42

However, there have been instances in the past where a human may inadvertently be turned into a European Vampire by the accidental ingesting of Vampire blood. This can occur if European Vampire blood infects a cut or another injury on the human, similar to contamination by HIV. When this happens, the transformation can take up to 7 days to transform the human, with the mutation a slow and painful process. In this example, often the human may not realize they have been infected until it’s too late and the majority of their bodily functions have been either necrotized or transformed. 43

On this note, when the European Vampire or its coven discovers what has happened, usually the accidental Vampire is destroyed. European Vampires are exceptionally choosy whom they change due to the fact that European Vampires do not to live alone. When a European Vampire transforms a human into its species, it is done to have the human remain with them in their current (usually youthful) form. European Vampires choose their companions by appearance, intelligence, wealth or other attributes. Their chosen companions are then inducted into the coven where in some instances instead of just one European Vampire sharing its blood with the human, it could be the entire coven which share their blood to transform them. 44

SOUTH AMERICAN VAMPIRE45

~Physical Characteristics~46

When a South American Vampire changes from human to their Vampire form, their eyes turn completely red with their black pupils disappearing and all of their teeth turn long, pointed and sharp. This species of Vampire does not produce venom like the European Vampire or the North American Vampire, however they rely on their teeth, nails and speed. The nails on the South American Vampire’s hands become long and sharp like small knives and are the strongest nails of all the species of Vampires SSIT encountered.47

The strength of a South American Vampire is ten times that of a human. Like their European cousins, South American Vampires have supernaturally fast reflexes which can be measured at the same rate as the speed of sound. However South American Vampires are able to maintain this speed by running long distances, but they cannot jump the same heights like European Vampires can.48

A South American Vampire’s longevity may reach 500 years, but this is only true if a member of this species is successful in hunting to prolong their strength, regenerative ability and longevity. If a South American Vampire cannot feed on fresh blood at least once every 3 days, then their metabolic system, strength and life expectancy fails.49

South American Vampires are extremely sensitive to the cold, with frost bite severely damaging them. Only once did SSIT hear of an instance where three South American Vampires ventured into a cold habitat, when they came to hunt the Lokoti Werewolves in Alaska. It was an Alaskan summer though, with no snow in the area which is how the South American Vampires survived the environment. With this said, South American Vampires are primarily found in the jungle parts of the continent of South America or regions where it does not snow in winter. On this note, it is not uncommon to find South American Vampires in Mexico either. 50

Many South American Vampires use their keen sense of smell to hunt their prey which is primarily human. Using their Vampire ability to slow their breathing or to take extremely long breaths, they can successfully hunt underwater. By utilizing their multiple sharp teeth, they are not adverse to chewing on the flesh of their victims to squeeze out more blood by masticating their meals. It is because of this that many human victims who are dragged from rivers in parts of South America such as the Amazon, are accounted to have been the victims of a piranha attack instead. 51

In other instances such as in Mexico, South American Vampires who migrate to this country, may prey on animals to avoid punishment and therefore destruction by humans. Quite often domestic live stock, such as goats are chosen for the accessibility and ease of hunting. By this choice in meal, the El Chupacabra ‘the Mexican Goat Sucker’ is blamed instead of the South American Vampire. 52

~History~53

With the invasion and subsequent destruction of the Aztecs, Mayan, Incan and other South American cultures by the Spanish Conquistadors; it is difficult to trace the history of the South American Vampire past this period. Therefore SSIT could not create an accurate time line, tracking the evolution or distribution of this supernatural creature before the 15th Century. But by talking to local historians, when our investigators pried deeper into Aztec culture and the fall of this empire, new evidence of South American Vampires arose.54

What happened to the Aztec people by the Spanish Conquistadors is a horrific chapter of history, which then coupled with stories of how the Aztec’s lived, fought and performed their own religious ceremonies; the bloodied tales lends credence to a South American Vampire’s feeding habit. A common practice of the Aztecs was to maim their opponent in battle, capture them and later use them in religious rituals. Aztec Priests would cut open their human sacrifices and pull out their organs which would become apart of the ceremony and even, part of the ceremonial costume such as wearing the intestines around the neck. With this a common practice for these humans, it is little wonder that some of these Aztec Priests were also South American Vampires.55

With the invasion and the ultimate decimation of the Aztecs by the Spanish Conquistadors, a coven of three South American Vampires left Mexico to migrate further north. It is told by two local historians who are also Shaman that when the Spanish authorities put an end to the human sacrificial ceremonies, the three Vampires who had been Aztec Priests participating in this bloodshed; decided to depart for new hunting grounds. This small coven traveled up through the United States feeding on several human Native American Tribes, before reaching Canada where upon they heard the oral history/ story of the Lokoti Werewolves. 56

It was summer in Alaska when the three South American Vampires hunted out the Lokoti Werewolves in the vast wilderness which is today called the Lokoti National Park, located in the Alaska Range. Lokoti Tribal Elders confirm the reports of the South American Vampires attacking the 15 members of the Lokoti Werewolf pack and even the humans of the Lokoti Tribe. It was a battle with high casualties, with the South American Vampires ultimately destroyed by the Lokoti Werewolves. The South American Vampires were ten times stronger than humans however Lokoti Werewolves are fifty times stronger, in Werewolf form. The South American Vampires managed to kill several Lokoti Werewolves and even more human Tribal members, with their greater speed and knife-like nails before they met their demise. 57

With the supposed end of human sacrificial rituals in other cultures than just the Aztec by the Spanish invasion; South American Vampires retreated away from the cities or large towns by hiding and hunting in jungles and/ or country areas. By ‘going underground’ they were able to continue to hunt and feed on human albeit in significantly lesser numbers, with ravaging their victims in a way that blames mostly natural causes such as animal attacks instead. However many of local historians and Shaman pass down the history of the South American Vampire to the younger generations in efforts not just to educate but to warn them. 58

~Reproduction / Mating Habits~59

South American Vampires cannot sexually reproduce but instead they create more of their kind by sharing their blood with the chosen. 60

If there is an accidental turning of a human that becomes infected with its blood then the accidental Vampire is destroyed. South American Vampires are territorial and can either live alone or in small covens up to three South American Vampires but no more, as they do not like to share their hunting grounds. South American Vampires prefer not to associate with other covens like European Vampires do for political reasons, with many a disagreement solved by destroying the arguer with their teeth and nails.61

As European Vampires prefer to live in towns and cities, their ‘cousins’ prefer to live in rural areas. South American Vampires are almost the exact opposite to European Vampires culturally, although they are by no means treated as ‘the poor relation’ but instead they receive the treatment of ‘steer clear’. South American Vampires may not be seen as ‘refined’ as their European cousins due to the facts that they prefer the outdoors to hunt, they are not interested in intellect nor are they as choosy over who they feed on. But on this note they are still extremely selective on who will become their progeny and therefore their future companions. It is not uncommon for a South American Vampire becoming dissatisfied with a new Vampire they turned and killing/ feeding on them instead. 62

NORTH AMERICAN VAMPIRE63

~Physical Characteristics~64

WARNING – This species of Vampire has poisonous fangs which can temporarily paralyze humans.65

When a North American Vampire changes from human to their Vampire form, their eyes glow and appear red on the outside of their irises with yellow in the middle. Their upper canine teeth become long and sharp like the fangs on a snake. Also when they change, their foreheads become pronounced giving this species along with their glowing reddish eyes a more ‘demonic’ appearance. This species of Vampire has venom that is secreted by the fangs which can paralyze their human victims for up to 3 days – if they survive. The nails on the Vampire’s hands can become longer and sharper. 66

The strength of a North American Vampire is fifteen times that of a human. North American Vampires are the strongest of the Vampire species investigated by SSIT. Although their fast reflexes are supernaturally faster than a human’s; they are not as fast as European or South American Vampires. They can run up to speeds of 360 km/h in short bursts. They are not as agile as European Vampires so they cannot jump as high or as far.67

A North American Vampire’s longevity can reach 400 years. It is believed their life span is significantly less than the other species because of their fast metabolic rate. With this species, they need to hunt either every day to maintain their greater strength and at least every 2 days to survive. The only time North American Vampires can go for long periods of time with out feeding is after they have fed on another Vampire or a Werewolf, where they can then rest for up to 7 days before they have to go hunting again.68

With their greater strength, North American Vampires can perform strenuous physical activity with ease. They can heal faster than the other Vampire species with out requiring Werewolf blood and can imbibe human blood to regenerate from serious injuries. This species of Vampire primarily hunts human and with their sadistic use of the bloodlust, they relish killing their victims in a bloody way as possible. North American Vampires hunt by using their heightened sense of smell and unlike their European cousins, do not use tact or cunning in choosing and then hunting their victims; they prefer a more ‘smash and grab’ approach. Many news reports of highway car-jackings with the cars found to be smashed and the owners missing, can be attributed to the North American Vampire’s destructive nature. 69

~History~70

The North American Vampire is an excellent example how polymorphic the Vampire gene can be; as this species is the result of a cross-contamination between European and South American Vampire DNA to have created this mongrel. 71

This species of Vampire owes its history as well as its physical characteristics to its genetic ‘forefathers’ of the European and the South American Vampire. Due to the North American Vampire’s nomadic culture, it is hard to pinpoint how this genetic transference took place. With the European and South American Vampire’s inability to procreate via sexual means, the creation of this species was obviously by blood transference from both ‘parents’. However SSIT was unable to use DNA testing methods on the North American Vampire subjects we encountered to create a biological time line to mark this species inception.72

What SSIT have been able to conclude though, is this species did not exist prior to the 15th Century. This information was obtained from interviewing several Tribal Elders of differing Native American Tribes whose history was passed down Orally. With the advent of Christopher Columbus ‘discovering’ America and the subsequent invasion of European and British settlers, what joined in with this cross-cultural foray was a coven of European Vampires. But as European Vampires prefer to live in already established large towns or cities, this coven soon became displeased with colonial living. Sometime before this subsequent coven’s departure, their blood was mixed in with a South American Vampire’s blood in a human victim, which incubated and henceforth developed into the first North American Vampire.73

By using several examples taken from human history, SSIT attempted to make a juxtaposition how this cross-contamination occurred. The coven of the European Vampires may have temporarily settled into the state which is now called Texas. But then parts of this land were still laid claim upon by Mexico. Several Covens of South American Vampires who had migrated to Mexico, during the Aztec period to partake in the rituals; would have surely seen this piece of geography as their hunting grounds. The South American Vampires would have most likely fought the European Vampire coven as they saw it as protecting their territory. In this violent altercation an unlucky human witness was somehow pulled into the violence and subsequent contamination by both Vampires occurred.74

To re-confirm, this is only conjecture with no actual evidence. However several differing facts lend credence to this theory. The first, was by interviewing several different European Vampire subjects from two differing European Vampire covens. They confirmed the story of a coven that departed for the ‘Colonies’, but only a few survivors made it back. These survivors were granted sanctuary by the other European Vampire covens on their return, because they sold an important piece of information; the existence of South American Vampires. With this knowledge, the ‘Colonies’ that eventually became the United States of America was largely avoided by European Vampires for nearly two centuries. It was not until many large cities sprung up and the borders defining California, Texas and Mexico developed that European Vampires came to this country again. 75

When they did, the European Vampire subjects that SSIT interviewed, expressed their shock that the North American Vampire existed; then their abject horror when they used their refined sense of smell to confirm it was part of their own DNA which had created them. With this ‘Accidental Vampire’, several different European Vampire covens attempted to wipe out the members of North American Vampires they encountered. However with the North American Vampire’s strength, this attempt at annihilation was unsuccessful. 76

~Reproduction / Mating Habits~77

North American Vampires replicate more of their numbers by sharing their blood with the chosen. However they are the more violent of all of the Vampire species and prefer to hunt by using brute force alone. It is because of this that there are hardly any female North American Vampires with predominantly a male population and many North American Vampire covens are all male. 78

When a North American Vampire attacks a woman it is not in sexual assault as their sexual organs are no longer functioning. However male North American Vampires derive a sadistic pleasure from either torturing or brutalizing their weaker victims. It is because of this, they often run into conflicts with European Vampires where female Vampires are treated as equals since their abilities match their male counterparts. If a male North American Vampire should try to feed on or physically assault a female European Vampire; the female European Vampire’s coven will declare war on the male North American Vampire’s coven. In this case, 60% of these battles are won by the European species due to their greater cunning and speed. 79

As North American Vampires are nomads and their attacks disorganized, it is a semi-frequent occurrence of accidental turnings of their human victims into other North American Vampires. When this happens, the new North American Vampire may meet other survivors and then they begin a new coven. On a sadder note, other cases of this type of accident occurring is that the new Vampire may be so repelled by the experience of how their loved ones who were slaughtered when the individual was turned; that they decide against becoming the monsters who inadvertently made them. By this personal choice they painfully ignore their bloodlust and starve to death after only two days.80

WEST AFRICAN VAMPIRE81

~Physical Characteristics~82

What was briefly mentioned in the Introduction to this report, most Vampire species appear as human but can change form to their Vampire other when fighting and feeding. However there are a few Vampire species which almost permanently look as their other and can only attain human appearance by feeding on humans. The West African Vampire is an example of this species of Vampire.83

West African Vampires are biologically a ‘blank slate’, that is to say they have a rare mutation of the albino gene that has no skin pigmentation, hair or eye colouring. This species is literally white because their bodies are unable to sustain natural colouring, which aside from the attempt to appear healthy or normal; their bodies are missing the vital hormones secreted from one example, the pituitary gland. The West African Vampire has the unnerving appearance of a human native to the continent of Africa, but with white afro hair, white eyes but for small black pupils and white, sometimes translucent skin. 84

This rare species of Vampire is usually male and their feeding pattern is concentrated on male humans. The West African Vampire’s choice of meal is not born from luxury rather it is out of necessity. The West African Vampire not only drinks the blood from the victim, but it takes other fluids from parts of the male human bloody that its supernatural body requires to function and to produce human colouring for its epidermis. By feeding on the victim’s blood, hormones and other bodily fluids, the West African Vampire adopts the colouring of its victim and sometimes other characteristics such as its body weight. This Vampire appears to be the most like a Shape-Shifter as its appearance can largely depend on the appearance of its victim. 85

On this note, the reason why the male West African Vampire chooses human males to feed on, is because if it fed on a female human and imbibed female hormones such as estrogen, then it would greatly effect its shift in shape. Although SSIT cannot confirm if this could actually cause the male West African Vampire to change into a female, scientifically we can project it would be worse than a transsexual undergoing medical treatment to change gender from male to female. The physical damage to this species of Vampire would be physically traumatic to the point of endangering it.86

West African Vampires do not have fangs or sharp elongated teeth or nails in Vampire form, nor does it have venom. Its strength is only five times that of a human being, although it is as fast as a European Vampire. Instead this species of Vampire uses the flora or fauna in its native grounds such as specific plants or snake venom that has a paralyzing effect, to make poison darts to stun their victims. When their meal has been neutralized and is unable to fight back, the West African Vampire then carries the human male to their hide-out/ home to slowly feed on the victim. The feeding is a long, drawn out process that the West African Vampire utilizes many of the victim’s bodily fluids to replenish its own, whilst keeping the human alive, paralyzed and in subsequent agony through out the entire time. 87

The West African Vampire’s longevity is one of the shortest in the Vampire species; with a lifespan typically reaching 150 years old. Of course, this age can only be reached from successfully hunting to prolong its strength, regenerative ability and longevity. However if a West African Vampire cannot feed on a human at least once a month, then their metabolic system, strength and life expectancy fails.88

~History~89

One of the parts of the male human body that the West African Vampire feeds on is the pituitary gland that helps regulates majority of the body’s hormones. As this is located in the human brain, West African Vampires use tools such as straws carved out of wood or metal to reach the gland. With the West African Vampire’s feeding pattern drawing them towards this part of the human body, quite often makes the West African Vampire mistaken in African history as another brain-feeding supernatural creature; the Zombie.90

SSIT had begun investigating the legends of the Zombie in Africa, when we accidentally stumbled upon this unique species of Vampire. At first there were several arguments within SSIT if this creature was in fact a Vampire or not; because the primary aim of the West African Vampire’s feeding habits was not just to exist on blood, but other bodily fluids. Also the West African Vampire can do something no other Vampire species in the world can; it can procreate via sexual means. With these two facts standing out, we postulated if the West African Vampire was a Vampire? Or was it just a Shape Shifter? Or was it even another form of Zombie?91

Since Zombies eat brain matter for the unique combination of chemicals and high concentrations of glucose, after further study of the West African Vampire it became apparent it did not eat the brain matter but it only drank from one part of the brain; the pituitary gland. Then as Elisha Worthall continued to secretly observe this species whilst taking scientific recordings, she noted a pattern. The colouring of the West African Vampire changed the more it fed, from white to dark. Then after our subject fed on an obese male human, Elisha Worthall noted that its physical form was heavier for approximately one month before the creature had to feed again. After drinking from its next victim, by draining it dry and absorbing its recent meal’s blood, hormones, white cells, red cells and other matter, its body such as its colouring and weight changed again. It became obvious that we were dealing with a Shape Shifter and not a Zombie. Then as we discovered our Shape Shifter long life was due to feeding on human bodily fluids? We officially categorized this species the West African Vampire.92

This species of Vampire has a long history and has always remained in Africa, never migrating away from the continent. As the European, South American and North American Vampires can both migrate as well as show territorial behavior; the West African Vampire is permanently situated. Due to this, they are particularly guarded over their secret identities to protect their feeding habit, which if they should miss a monthly meal? Then this is costly not just by starvation but by their human appearances slipping with their white colouring returning.93

~Reproduction / Mating Habits~94

West African Vampires lead double lives, as outwardly they can appear completely normal (if they keep up a regular feeding pattern). They can consume foods in soup form although it is harder for them to digest more solid matter. They can be married and have children, with one of their male children growing into another West African Vampire when it reaches puberty. In most cases the human females who become the wives of West African Vampires believe they have married human men and are oblivious to their husband’s and son’s supernatural feeding habits. However, should the human wife find out and if she should threaten their habits by the risk of exposure? Then she would be eliminated. 95

When the male child is ‘turned’ into a West African Vampire, this process begins during adolescence. Puberty damages their supernatural bodies which the result is many cellular diseases such as leukemia, cancer or even blood disorders developing. As their colouring begins to fade from both illness and from the albino West African Vampire genes emerging, the father takes the son out hunting. The older West African Vampire trains the younger West African Vampire on an eating pattern which it will need to sustain for the rest of its existence to not only survive, but keep up the charade of normalcy. 96

With the West African Vampire’s inability to sustain natural colouring or function, it is related to the other Vampire species’ stasis/ necrotizing of flesh or organs. The older the West African Vampire becomes, the more it comes to depend on their human victims to sustain their poorer systems. This coupled with their non-existent independence of bodily functions, they solely rely on the humans they consume to function in their day-to-day lives. 97

CONCLUSION98

In this scientist’s point of view, the West African species of Vampire was the most interesting by far in all the species that SSIT examined. The reason for this is, the West African Vampire appears to embody not just Vampire tendencies, but even supernatural cultural elements such as Egyptian Mummies, aside from the Zombie or Shape-Shifter legends found in other parts of Africa. 99

The Egyptian curse is that if a tomb robber or the archeologist (which can sometimes be the same thing) unearths a Mummy and their burial treasure; then certain death can become of the disturber. When looking at the process of Mummification in an objective sense, this burial ritual can be seen as a human’s attempt at the Vampire’s longer life. Vampire species have a long life because their bodies are in semi-stasis, or is the result of the necrotizing of the flesh or organs. When one looks at mummification, the same can be said of the priests who prepared and preserved the dead. 100

The Ancient Egyptian mummification process entails several of the deceased’s organs such as the brain or the heart which are extracted and much of the body is filled with salt, to dry and keep the flesh. The extracted organs are not discarded but are kept close to the Mummy, so the dead may use them as well as their possessions that are buried with them in the ‘After Life’. One could speculate that this Ancient Egyptian burial ritual/ funeral was the Ancient Egyptian’s primitive attempt at Vampirism. The necrotized body is preserved for ‘long life’, with vital organs removed as even certain Vampire’s species organs no longer function either. Vampires must feed on the living to ensure their survival, to take the place of the organs that regulated their blood which no longer work, since much of their body is in suspended animation. 101

With the Egyptian curse, the tomb robber is supposed to meet certain death for disturbing the sleep of the dead. Depicted in Hollywood movies, it is the Mummy itself enacting the horrible deeds of taking the organs from the living to replace its own so it may reform and become living flesh once more. This is Hollywood’s version which is clearly fiction, but it is remarkable how similar these feeding habits relate to the West African Vampire. It is also interesting to note historically of the run of ‘bad luck’ which has fallen on the different members of archeological digs; for example what occurred during and after, the infamous unearthing of Tutankhamen. 102

One may argue in this instance that it was a set of different circumstances which when lumped together, could simply be called unfortunate. But from all of the cases that SSIT have investigated on supernatural topics such as phantom lights, haunted houses, ESP as well as Devil’s Triangles; what has been proven is that sometimes a series of natural events can combine to create a supernatural event. Aside from the Western stories of the Tutankhamen dig, it is interesting to note that many Egyptians show a sizeable respect in leaving the ancient dead to rest in peace in their ornate burials; which is the same wariness as Koreans may feel towards the mine fields that separate the North and South of their countries. Why tempt fate which may seal your own?103

The cross-cultural similarities between Vampirism and many other facets of the supernatural are so alike that the borders between them can appear to be blurred. When one looks in hindsight at the fact European Vampires are not the strongest in the supernatural world, their hunting/ feeding pattern is traditionally nocturnal. This is not just for the fact that their skin has a great deal of healing from sunburn, but because their food source aka humans are usually slumbering during the nighttime period. 104

European Vampires use their agile abilities to feed on humans when they are asleep by slipping into the human’s bedrooms unseen, which saves the Vampires from physical exertion if they hunted the humans when they were awake. If the Vampire was unlucky, their feeding on the sleeping human could be interrupted by another human walking in. The witness finds the Vampire lying on top of the human so it can have a better angle to place their mouths on the major arteries such as the jugular and hence; the legends of the European Vampire are blurred into the Incubus or Succubus who are traditionally, sex demons. 105

Many species of Asian Vampires also prefer to hunt at night. With the Asian Vampire, as there were many differing genetic subdivisions of this species; SSIT could not include them in this report but had to launch a separate investigation on this group of supernatural creatures. Just as Asia is divided into many differing cultural entities and languages, so too were it’s Vampires. 106

To briefly mention though, a typical physical characteristic of several different species of Asian Vampires, was a genetic trait which made them very similar to the West African Vampire. As the West African Vampire is male, many species of Asian Vampires were predominantly female. The West African Vampire fed on male humans; the certain species of female Asian Vampires hunted female humans or to be even further specific, pregnant female humans. Their feeding patterns were directly linked to a biological function lacking in the Vampire’s bodies to force them to seek it out in others. As a Vampire Bat in the natural world must drink ten times its weight to survive, it’s humanoid Shape-Shifter Vampire cousins must follow similar behavior in their ongoing need to feed on human. 107

...thank YOU for putting in the time and effort for reading! (thank you, no thank you, I said thank you first, no *I* said thank you first...then the two writers topple over during a round of hair pulling) Sorry, it's getting late and my eyes are stinging

I really, really liked this. I'm amazed at the thought you've put into all of it, and I think with the new vampire fad, something like this was needed to take all vampire stories a step forward - no longer can people just simply make up new stuff about vampires(like, say, i dunno, glittery skin?) without reasoning behind it. Vampires can have culture, history, their stories can be in better depth if there's a common reference for all of them. And all of it seems very logical. You've done some amazing thinking.
As for the writing style, unfortunately, it's hard to read, and it gets very boring and repetitive. There's a LOT of repetitiveness here, and again, I got bored and couldn't read all of it. But well done!

This is hilarious; I was imagining Darwin, aboard the Beagle, ashore in South America, coming across the South American Vampire and jotting your notes down...right before he got bit to death!

It's disparities like these wot make me totally disbelieve in the logic of vampire stories...although making them different 'species' was a nice new way to try and explain the differences in so many of the stories out there.

      Hi Valkyrie!

Thanks for reading and commenting You know, I could imagine Darwin doing that as well! Mind you, when someone finds his body and quite possibly it could be dragged from a river? From the multiple sharp teeth marks, piranhas would probably get the blame.

You know, the immortal can leave for a different universe. According to the defnition, not even a cell will die, so the universe is everlasting in that way if immortals exist.

      Howdy Memo213...

...good point. Energy doesn't cease to exist it simply changes form. So on that note, you could say that everyone is immortal However I like Mulder & Scully's discussion. In the ep where a Vamp asked Mulder wouldn't he like to live forever? His dry reply was, "not if drawstring pants come back." Or in another ep Scully once hypothesized that by humans procreating, it's their way of immortality of passing on their genes

  • I have not had the opportunity to right on the existence and being of vampire like forms yet, but I honestly captivated by your understanding and definitions of these unique creatures that have become ever so popular. Good job and keep it up!!

Thanks for reading and I hope the story entertained I must confess I didn't do THAT much researching, as this piece was years long in the making and I have an unusual knack for remembering the strangest or most obscure facts. I consistently failed Math in school but I could remember what celebrity named their child or what kind of torture methods they used on Witches during the long years of the Inquisition. I used to rock up to my History lectures at Uni and sometimes just sit there instead of taking notes, happily listening away as if it were story time instead

I used to be a huge Vampire fan, but now I lean more towards Werewolves. But I've been writing about Vamps since I was 7 yrs old & read nearly every book I could find about them. However I was one of those kids in Sunday School who put their hand up and asked for technical details how God created Earth in 7 days. So I guess I'm doing the same thing with this 'scientific report' by putting my hand up and asking, "how can Vampires be immortal if Earth won't last and our Sun will expand and the universe will go through the Big Crunch where nothing will survive?"

      Hi Kami!

Nup, I haven't written an SSIT Report on Asian Vamps yet. I'm not 100% sure if I will, although I have written a chapter in 'Alma' where they come to visit my Lokoti Werewolves. They followed the Asian Werewolf Zen Hua to Alaska where Zen, Declan, B, Kevin and Walt all fought them off. The Asian Vamps tried to have a go at Mali, Kita, B and her daughters. In my story they're white whispy things that are so emaciated they appear to almost float when they move.

On Wikipedia on the entry on Vampires, it mentions how many of the Asian Vamps are different depending on the country. I thought it was interesting how many of them were females who preyed on other females particularly pregnant women or newborns. My flatmate who is also interested in the supernatural as I am, has a book that also mentions some Asian Vamps targeting females. This fascinated me, as I think I read somewhere that some of the female Asian Vamps had been pregnant women who may have 'died' from childbirth or something as such? Or something similar, you get the idea.

Anyways, I may end up writing a SSIT Report on them as believe it or not, I wasn't planning on writing one for Vampires. My first report on the Different Breeds of Werewolves stood alone until during writing 'Sororate' that I thought, "what the hell?"
