The End is Near

In the modern world, where all we humans dwell, we think we have discovered every possible corner of the Earth. We have evidence from satelittes, so obviously no errors, right? Think again. In the dead center of the Atlantic Ocean, there is an island. It's not terribly large, or terribly small. It's called home by about ten or fifteen thousand people. They are normal humans, like you or I, yet different in some ways.1

These people pride themselves on the fact that they have stayed hidden from us for so long. They control the population of their island, so as not to physically expand. Also, they have another secret power they posess, is that they control the physical world.2

Since these people have no contact with the world, they are unaware that they seem to control it, with harmless items. If they touched the wrong ones, they would surely blow up the world in a swift motion, but they are unaware of this great power.3

For example, one of these weapons is the Sword and Shield of the Fallen King. The island's first King, Saccarus, was a brave warrior, and prided himself in his steel sword and iron shield. When he died, a grave robber dug up his coffin, and tore the sword and shield from the King's dead hands. The grave robber sold off the items to someone for a hefty price, but it was the current King's servant, who returned it to the palace. Whenever these precious artifacts are touched, a war erupts somewhere in the world. For example, in World War II, someone had been tracing the lines on the shield, causing miniature wars to erupt between just two or three countries. 4

A second weapon that these people posess, is the Flying Dagger of the East. This weapon can only be activated by the King, because it is only he who knows of it. Luckily, this weapon has been lost. If it was used, a large asteriod would hit the Earth, and it would send the human race into the fourth demension. There have been a number of close calls though. Once the King was looking for this dagger, and almost stumbled upon it. That was when the asteriod killed the dinosaurs. Also, the King has a duty to go through every room in the palace once a year, and it seems that every time he goes into the guest suite, near the closet, a small meteor shower erupts. It is a great spectacle to regualr humans, but could be quite deadly if the King got any closer.5

Finally, the weapon to be most feared, is the Ax of Final Destruction. Some legend, buried deep in the book of legends that the island scribes had written over the years, says that the bearer of the Ax of Final Destruction will chop down the tree of life, causing the world to end. Nobody actually cared about this legend, scoffing that it had to be impossible, for there was no tree of life. Only one philosopher who lived on the island had ever cared enough about the legend. He devoted his life to finding the Ax, and to destroy it, but he never came close to it's actual location.6

So this story brings us to a young boy named Poch. He lived on a farm with his father, Spencer. Throughout Poch's life, his father had taught him everything about working on a farm: when and how to milk the cows, how to tell a fresh apple from a rotten one, and finally, the big tree. The tree that Spencer showed him had been alive for an uncountable number of generations, providing shade and firewood from it's branches. It was so tall that Poch couldn't see the top, even with his neck turned all the way up.7

Once day, in the early days of summer, Spencer was suddenly diagnosed with an uncurable disease, which would keep him in bed for a few weeks, then kill him in his sleep. Poch was horror stricken by the news. He couldn't believe his beloved father would be dead in a matter of weeks. 8

So on one of Spencer's final healthy days, he showed Poch the Ax. This ax had been passed down for many generations. Nobody actually knew that this was the Ax of Final Destruciton, they just happened to keep it because it was incredibly sharp. Nobody had really used it either. It was so sharp and beautiful, they were afraid with one chop that it would turn dull. But in tradition, Spencer gave the ax to Poch, and told him to use it wisely.9

Eventually, the final day of Spencer came, and Poch couldn't deal with himself. He went into the tool shed and got out the ax. He was so mad, that he ran and ran and ran acoss the fields of his father's farm, until he reached the gigantic tree. Now, his father or him or anybody knew that this was the sacred tree of life. Poch took the ax and began hacking away his sadness and anger at the tree. 10

The first chop of this gigantic trunk began global warming or awarness of it. 11

CRACK!12

The second chop started the global recession.13

CRACK!14

The third chop started the water shortage.15

CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!16

Poch kept hacking away at the tree, chopping and chopping, until his was so exhausted that he collapsed on the ground and fell asleep. It was a good thing that he did too. He had chopped the tree so far that one more chop would have toppled the tree over, ending the world. 17

I really liked this story, although the spelling errors take away from its rhythm. I am adding this to the finalist list.

The way you introduced this story was fantastic. The thought of an unknown island was pretty cool. How you introduced each weapon was a little blunt, and could use some more smooth transitions. Thanks for your entry, and good luck.
