Audition #63: Molly Hodges

Number sixty-three: Molly Hodges of 611 West Pollimer Street, Apartment number twelve, Brooklyn, New York. Female. She was a beautiful girl. Hal Osborne looked at the front of the audition card. It didn’t tell him anything that he couldn’t know by just looking at her. She was five ten and weighed one hundred sixty pounds. Honest. She obviously hadn’t lied about her weight.1

Hair: brown. Hal smiled, dark mahogany was more accurate. It fell on her shoulders in perfectly straight locks. Hal was not a stylist, but knew enough to know that on a humid day, her hair would fall in lush chocolaty waves. But, for today, she had straightened it. Most likely a flat iron.2

Eyes: brown. Sad brown eyes that had more of a story than her audition would let Hal in on. Probably more than years of dating would let any man in on. Her eyes were also nervous. Her whole face shone of nervousness. From her thin glossy lips to her high, lightly blushed cheeks, all the way down to her soft chin, and back up to the sharp little nose that rested daintily on her face, it all revealed a deep nervousness. A deep nervousness that revealed a fact that he would read about on the back of the card. She was not an actress.3

Hal flipped the card over. He had hit the nail on the head. Experience: none. Molly Hodges had never set foot on a professional stage in her life. It was quit apparent by her attire. It wasn’t ugly or unfashionable, but it wasn’t that typical thespian class, and it was much too loud to be an appropriate audition ensemble. It took away from the face. A tight white top that would have nicely accented her curves had it not been for the knee length brown leather coat. She wore tight jeans tucked into her high heel brown leather boots at her knees. This girl sure liked her earth-tones. Judging by her attire she was either a musician or a photographer. Hal glanced over at the seat she had sat in while waiting for the audition. A guitar case and a camera sat with her woven purse. Also brown.4

The girl had no experience, but she had ambition. Hal put the card in the “To be reviewed” pile and smiled at the girl, “Thank you Miss Hodges,” He took a deep breath and shouted, “Next,” as he watched Number sixty-three, Molly Hodges return to her seat.5

Good use of the prompt - an audition is quite an interesting way of portraying your character through the eyes of another. I enjoyed how you had your observer make supposition about what sort of person she is - and then follow that up with another observance. For instance he believes she might be a photographer or a musician - and another glance reveals that she is.

Thank you for your entry in Walk A Day in These Shoes and good luck!
