She sat back against the cool obelisk and slowly closed her eyes. 1

"The End Is Near!" echoed in her head as the slow vibrations continued. AS the wind began to pick up the icicles broke off from her hair, flying into the circle. 2

The guardians eyes opened. She had been waiting to hear those words. Deep magic was being practiced and she had to act. The Demon must not be set free! The guardian squinted her eyes so that she could get a better look at the dark floor before her. A dark figure stood over the edge of the cliff with his hands held high. With the incline of his head, the guardian could almost make out the white of his eyes. Deep magic. He must be possessed. If i can get him to look at me I can break his concentration. He will die. But it will be for the greater good. 4

The figure turned, as if he heard her thoughts. A sly grin spread to his face. A soft voice escaped his teeth. "i almost forgot. My honored guest." the man thrust his right had into the sky. "Winds of the North I call you to me. Winds of the West I cal you to me. Winds of the East I call you to me. Winds of the South I call you to me. Winds of the North I call you to me!" As each direction was called red tendril sprouted from his chest. His life's energy waved in the air momentarily before being swept up in a slight zephyr. More enchanted words were uttered to stir the atmosphere of the mountain. The zephyr picked up and its speed increased steadily from a slight breeze to a vortex.5

The guardian widened her eyes. She had underestimated this man. His power was greater than hers. "Impossible." Her voice was so foreign to there air that it seemed to come from an unknown source. The woman struggled against her bonds. She had a split time before time as she knew it would be thrown to chaos. She had to kill him. The guardian focused in on his frame and began to chant the forbidden words. "Melahkanamen atu atu. Melahkanamen atu atu. Melahkan-" 6

Her words were cut short as the mountain became and epicenter. Boulders and shards fell from the top of the mountain rolling to the Iceland valley below. A deep fissure crept out of the valley and burst to light. Slowly beast and sprites crawled from the frozen depths below. the quake continued carving out a systematic prism that had been shut below many years ago. As the shaking of the earth quieted the pillars rose from their deep sleep into the dark air. The Maze had risen again. 8

"You can't do this! This is against all of our laws! You'll lose your badge if you continue!"9

"Does it look like I care witch! I have lost everything that I hold dear. But this..." The ex-guardian spread his hands at his handiwork. 10

As the woman had been making her plan, the magician had been completing his. The ice floor had sufficiently broken up. Electric green streams flowed into the air releasing demigods from their long slumber. Demons romped at their new found free, howling at the high star in the sky. The guardian shuddered. She was too late. It had begun.11

The man turned back to her. "And now. I can sit back with you and wait for the guilds to attempt to fix this."12

The guardian didn't answer. She simply prayed that the towers had been alarmed as soon as the seal had been broken. At that moment sentries and warriors flooded into the field to control the flux of unruly sprites. Clanging of metal to flesh and claws to skin floated up to the top. The dark man leaned against the side and relax.13

"Why?" 14

He turned to the guardian. "because the time has come Ephtha."15

"How do you know my name? Why have you done this? Do you realize what you have done?"16

"I have done nothing more or less than full filled the final prophecy for the end of days. It is time for the earth to run with free beast. I shall lead them, for I am their savior."17

"You will be stopped!" Ephtha shook with fury struggled against her bonds. If she could just get her right hand free!18

The man tossed his head back and laugh. Gurgling and coughs assaulted to sordid air like pest. He calmed himself and advance on the guardian. "And who,pray tell, will stop me? You and your incompetent comrades?"19


"You've forgotten about the last bit of the seer's words. With the breaking of the seal come three who will walk into the Maze and destroy you and the Demon Beast, once and for all."20

"I remember no such thing." the man furrowed his brow slightly worried. "But that is no consequence. Let these three come. I will flay them from their limbs."21

Ephtha bit her lip and said another silent prayer. Please Elder Ryan. Send your best warriors. War has come again."
