No Name...

Okay, so I don't know what to name the thing...but I do know that if I were to name it, no one would come...I have to write an essay for school, now don't go running off now, but I need some people to read it and tell me what they think, truthfully...there is no conclusion yet, just a begining and a body...but that doesn't really matter at the point....and one more thing, our teacher wouldn't let us use first or second person, so don't comment on the repeated 'one,' 'someone,' or 'students,' please....1

Topic:  The Importance of Literacy2

By: Morgana Donovan3

There are many reasons why literacy is important to everyone and not just students.  One reason being that there would be no way a person could graduate from high school without some skill in literacy.  Another reason would be that it would not be easy for one to get a job if they did not know how to read or write.  This would be because most jobs today require one to have at least a high school diploma.  Lastly, without literacy, one would miss out on some of the best aspects of life.  In other words, not having a skill as important as literacy can make one’s life dull, by not letting them experience some of the better aspects of life.  Many people love to read and write, and yet there are those few people who would consider this a complete waste of their time.4

Literacy is important to so many people, and it is most important in students while they are still in high school.  There are many reasons why this is so, and one being the fact that a student would need the literacy skills of reading and writing in-order to pass their English class.  Within in that point, would be another point that not only would one need to be able to read and write coherently in English, but they would also need to be able to speak properly, which would be another part of literacy.  Like said before, there are many reasons why literacy is so important during high school, a second reason would be the fact that it would be hard to complete one’s other classes.  For some students, they not only take the required classes of Geometry, Economics, and other such classes, but some also have to take Speech and other electives.  In speech, a person would need to know how to talk properly, write intelligibly, and read with understanding, and this would not be attainable without literacy.  Lastly, there is another reason why literacy is so important in high school.  The reason being that in order to graduate from high school, one must past ‘finals’ that tests a person on their different skills.  If a person could not read, then the person would have no chance of even coming close to passing that class.  In many classes, one also has to know how to write in order to form or complete a good essay.  So, to show the point, one could not possibly graduate from high school without being somewhat literate.5

Literacy, among other things, is important to obtaining a job also.  One reason that this is true is because many jobs require that a person is able to speak literally, or coherently.  This may because one would have to speak to their customers, or for the reason that they may have to speak to their co-workers.  Another reason may be that in many jobs, one would not be able to speak face-to-face with their co-workers.  When and if this were to happen, a person might have to write a letter to pass on information.  Within that letter, the words should not only be legible but also literate, and this would not be attainable if the writer had no skill in literacy.  A third reason would be that many jobs today require one to be able to read.  Now, it may be similar to having to write a co-worker a letter, seeing that one would not be able obtain the information someone has sent them if they could not read.  So, it can be truthfully proven that literacy is extremely important in obtaining a job.6

Many people would disagree, and yet there are many people who agree with this next statement:  without some form of literacy, one would miss out on some of the best aspects of life.  Now, going along with the belief that it is true, it is greatly important to not only oneself, but their children in the future to be literate.  A child begins to learn from their parents at an early age, and because of this, a parent needs to be able to read, to write, and to speak properly so that that child can learn at a faster rate.  Also, when a child grows older, they may need help with their homework out of school, and the most likely person they will turn to is their parents, and a parent would need to be literate in order to help their child.  Again, literacy is important to enrich one’s life, and another reason would be because it would be extremely hard for a person to obtain a good job with no literacy.  If a person had no truly stable income from a good job, they would not be able to purchase the things they would want or need.  Such things may be a car, or groceries.  Lastly, one would miss out on being able to read, in which many people love doing.  Reading is considered to many people, a wonderful pass time; and if one is incapable of reading, they are missing out on such an extraordinary thing.  So, like many people would agree, literacy is very important in life.7
