Why So Scared of The Dark?

Almost every species in the Universe has an irrational fear of the dark; but they're wrong, because it's not irrational. You see the reason why your afraid to go outside when its so dark you can't see your hand in front of your face, is because of me. Me, the one hides in the corner of your closet, me the one who stands in the room that the light don't work in, me the one who stands in the shadows of the forest. I have been in existence since nearly the beginning of time, and as time changed as did I. Currently I hide among humans, I speak and act like them, but I am not like them, no I am different, I am different. What am I? I am not sure what I am, but I have been called by different names through out the centuries. I have been called things such as vampire and chupacabra, but I am far more deadly than what humans have written about me, because those who call me vampire and chupacabra have merely caught glimpses of me, and those who have seen me fully haven't lived to say what I am. 11

As times changed, so did my hunting style. Instead of creeping through the dark following and stalking, as I did thousands of years ago when man barely crept up from the sea. I now hunt quite differently. This hunting is quite different, and is much more fun.22

I'm in a bar ordering my tenth drink; I can't get drunk; when a potential meal walks in. A gorgeous brunette walks in, all the human men stared at her as if she were an angel, two other girls walked in with her, but none nearly as beautiful as the brunette, my mouth watered at the the thought of her blood in my mouth. She sat down three stools from me. Almost immediately after sitting down a drunk man who had been here for two hours walked up to her nearly falling. "Hey there, hows about I buy you nather drank?"33

"No, I'm fine" she said. 44

"Come on now, just one more drank." Said the drunk man, just a bit more aggressively. He then grabbed her arm and said,"Just one drink."55

Perfect, I thought. I walked up to the man, pulled him away from the girl and said,"Come now, she said no, and she means it, so just leave her alone."66

"You don't tell me what to do,"He yelled. He then swung at me and missed. 77

I pushed him slightly and he went down, humans and their alcohol. I looked at the lovely brunette,"I apologize for what this man has done. He's drunk, he doesn't know what he's doing."88

"Don't worry I've gotten used to it." Said the brunette.99

"I'm sure you have." I then turned and started towards the door. 1010

"Wait, how'd you like to buy me a drink." She said in teasing voice.1111

"It'd be my pleasure." I then walked back and told the bartender to get the most expensive drink. After half an hour we'd have a couple drinks, and I offered her a ride home. She said sure and left her friends behind. 1212

She told me were she lived and we sped off in my black Mercedes. When we got to her house she invited me in.1313

"Hmm, now I'm not sure."1414

"Come on, it'll be fun." She begged.1515

"All right." I slipped out of the car and opened the door for her. 1616

"Such a gentleman." She said laughing.1717

"I am." I hugged her from behind and kissed her neck. She turned around and started kissing me passionately. The taste of her lips made me more anxious to start feeding. She held me close and I felt my change start to occur. I hugged her not for lust, but so she couldn't get away. My skin got hard and change to the color blue. I felt the four red spines pop out from my back. My eyes turned to the color of the night. My mouth filled with teeth as sharp as knives, and I kissed her one last time. The kiss of death. My tongue licked her and split into three and drew every ounce of blood into me. I pulled away when there was nothing left for me to drink. I looked at her and even though she was now dead she was so beautiful. 1818

So if you wonder why you fear the dark, why your dogs bark at the shadows when clearly nothings there. You now know that the reason is me, the creature of the night.

That was wonderful. It was really well written. Only one thing though is in paragragh 8 i was wondering if you tried to say 'humans and their alcohol' because 'humans are their alcohol' sounded a bit off to me. and your right, people are randomly afraid of the dark. Good job =]

That was awesome! I really like what you did with the quote. Kinda creepy, actually - reminded me a little of Stephen King, though it was shorter than his work, but same sort of story. That's not a bad thing, he's one of my favorite authors! Great job, thanks for entering me contest!

    girls in bars

Something that bothered me about the story was how the main character met the girl in a bar. Now i have been to a million pubs and bars and i have never, ever seen or heard a man go up to a girl he doesn't already know and offer to buy her a drink. It just doesn't happen. Women are to cowardly and suspicious to meet men in this way. Women 'meet up' in bars with men they meet in other situations (normally work).
If the Vampire character hangs out in bars by himself hoping to meet women victims then he'd be dead from lack of blood within a week. As he has no group with him women will treat him with immense suspicion and he'd be lucky to get even a polite conversation out of someone before the inevitable boyfriend (trust me, there is always a boyfriend) tells him to sod off.
In conclusion, the story does not ring true at all. This situation doesn't and couldn't happen in 2008 anywhere in the world.
The poor Vampire will drink alone, then go home alone, the end.

i used to think that anything could happen

but bitter experience has told me that life is extremely predictable. If i ever met a girl in a bar i would look for the cameras immediately as it would be an obvious set up.
