Don't Answer The Door - Ch. 29

"We can't stand here and stare at two already dead bodies, and wait for my father to die as well!" Nina screamed at Alex and Eva.2

Alex's eyes snapped open and he stared at Nina. His cheeks turned a bright red.3

"You're right. I'm sorry!" He screamed in his own defence.4

Eva shook her head, and shook out the thoughts as well. She ran to the trunk and slammed it shut. 5

"Forget it, for now." She said, as she ran to the side of the car.6

Eva got in and waited for Alex and Nina to get in as well. For a while, they didn't. Alex looked at Nina and he noticed the way she was looking at him. It was a look he never saw before, from anyone. It was mixed with different types of emotions, sorrow, sadness, hope, and even a glimpse of happiness, but was all covered with an expression of dreadfulness.7

"Nina?" He asked, curious what she was thinking.8

"Alex.." She said. There was a long pause, then she said, "Can you drive?" 9

He stared at her, knowing she had something else to say, but he didn't want to pressure her into anything. He hesitantly said yes. Alex walked towards Nina and took her by the arm and led her to the door of the back seat, opening it for her and helping her in. He slammed it shut and got into the front seat. 10

Alex sat there for a while, unaware of what he was going to do as it suddenly hit him. He then punched the steering wheel in anger and frustration.11

"Shit!" He screamed.12

Eva jumped in her seat.13

"What's wrong?" She asked, hopelessness filled the tone of her voice.14

"The damn tire, Eva! The fuckin' tire's flat damn it. Don't you remember?" He screamed, not at Eva, but at the fact they forgot about it for a few minutes.15

"Damn it!" Nina screamed from the back. 16

Nina, Eva, and Alex sat in the car with Jon in the back seat slowly dying. His only hope is to get to the hospital in time, and they didn't know whether or not they would be able to do that. They all sat there and thought hard for a solution, when suddenly the quiet air was pierced with a high pitched ringing sound.17

Eva and Alex looked at each other in confusion.18

"You have a cell phone?!" Alex screamed, as he turned in his seat and glared at Nina.19

"It's not mine!" She shouted from the back.20

"Then who's it for?!" Alex asked.21

"Who the hell cares? There's a cell phone in this car, and we have a dying man, just fucking answer it damn it! Jesus fucking Christ!" Eva screamed louder then both of them, straining to be heard. 22

Alex and Nina ignored Eva as they stared at each other. Alex turned back in his seat and stared ahead. The phone continued to ring and Eva's frustration began to rise. She leaned to the side, and looked for the phone. 23

"Where the hell is it?" She asked herself.24

"Ah-ha!" She found it and was extremely happy.25

"Hello?" She asked, hope filling her voice now.26

Alex and Nina stared at Eva as she answered the phone. They noticed as her expression changed from happy to a mix of shock and horror. 27

"Eva, what is it?" Alex asked her, as the phone fell from her hand.28

Alex heard the sound of a high pitched laughing, and insane laughter coming from the phone. He picked it up and screamed into the phone.29

"Hello?! Who is this?!"30

"Ah.. Alex.." The voice on the other end said slowly.31

"Who is this?! We need your help! We have a dying man here, and we're stranded!" He screamed into the phone.32

"Isn't that a shame? His blood is on your hands now. Ha Ha Ha Ha!" 33

Alex heard the sound of a huge explosion coming from the phone.34

"What was that?" He asked the man on the other end. 35

"It was your last chance to save your poor Jon. I just blew up the hospital, my dear dear nephew. Now, there is no point in trying to fix your car. Oh, By the way, I hope you liked the two gifts I left you in the trunk of the car." He said.36

There was a dead silence on both ends of the phone.37

"CAGE?!" Alex screamed in rage.38

"Ah.. you're intelligent, my boy. You're welcome." 39

"I didn't say thank you..." Alex said into the phone, confused.40

"The two dead men, they're the ones who shot Jon. Don't say I didn't do anything for you, Alex." 41

Cage hung up his phone, and Alex was left with a long beep coming from the other end. He stared blankly at the window on Eva's side of the car, and he stared blankly at the sun. 42

"Alex? What's the matter?" Nina asked from the back.43

"Nina, I'm sorry..." He said as he looked at her, tears engulfing his eyes. 44

"You're sorry? You're sorry?! For what?!" Nina screamed in fear.45

"Jon.. He's.. He won't make it, Nina."46

"What? Why not?!" She screamed, bursting into tears.47

"Cage, he just blew up the town's hospital Nina. That's his way of bringing more pain to us, and to everyone else. There's no way we can save him now, Nina. I'm sorry." 48

The air began to be filled with wailing, screaming and sobs as Nina held her father and cried on his shoulder. 49

"No!" She screamed.50

She couldn't stop crying. She rocked back and forth with her dying father in her arms. She looked into his eyes that were just slightly apart, not open, yet not quite closed. Nina kissed her fathers cheeks and forehead over and over.51

"Oh, Dad! Dad! Don't leave me alone!" She screamed through sobs. 52

Nina heard a small short gasp. The gasp came from her father.53

"Dad!" She screamed as she stared at him in confusion.54

She saw him open his eyes a bit more, and his lips parted. 55

"Don't..cry, Nina..." He said, through short gasps, and he pressured himself to continue. "I'll be fine.." He said.56

He found his daughters hand and squeezed it tightly, as Nina kissed his forehead once again. She cried softly as she saw her father close his eyes, and she couldn't feel his heart beat anymore. She wiped her tears away, but more continued to come. 57

"Goodbye father..." She said, as she sat still, her dead father laying limp in her arms. 58

Eva closed her eyes after witnessing the heart-wrenching moment. She too wiped the tears that fell from her own eyes. She wanted to tell Nina that she was sorry for her loss, but she knew it would sound corny. Eva also knew that it was not the right time, Nina still needed time to grieve. 59

Alex took Eva's hand and held it tightly as he quietly began to speak to her.60

"Eva, Town is not too far away. It'll be just over an hour walk. I'm heading there to get a few things, I'll be back as soon as I can. Take care of Nina."61

"Wait!" Eva said to Alex, but he was already out of the car. 62

Eva jumped out of the car and ran to him. 63

"Don't take too long, please, please don't." She said, as she hugged him tightly, and placed a single kiss on his lips. 64

Eva stood there watching her boyfriend walk away from her, not knowing when he'll be back, and why exactly he was leaving. 65
