What Happened?! (Quintet)

Amber walked toward the hall the clerk was talking about. Her heart was beginning to beat faster as the anticipation of seeing Joscelin grew.  2

She heard babies crying and happened to look up at sign that said "NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT". She couldn't help but stop to look at all the babies hooked up to machines. She was looking at this one baby, tubes coming out of his nose and wires all over him. She wondered what it would feel like to be that helpless. 3

Finally, she started on her way again. She did just as the clerk told her, down the hall and to the right. Then she remembered the clerk hadn't mentioned a room number.4

"CRAP!" Amber said out loud, "...the stupid clerk didn't tell me a room number."5

Amber just kept walking until she gave up. She figured she would find it, but she never did. She stopped a nearby nurse and asked if she knew where he was, hoping she would.6

"Umm... excuse me. Do you know where a Joscelin Forte is?" 7

"Actually," she said, " he is one of MY patients. Here, let me show you where his room is."8

"Whoa, wasn't expecting that one. Thanks!"9

They walked up the hall just a little more and went into a room. Amber wasn't expecting what she saw. 10

She walked in the room and said hey to his mom that was in there with him. She didn't know he would look that bad. She could image how much pain he was in.11

His face was all bruised up and his leg was elevated. He was wrapped in white and blue gauze on his chest, and had a blue cast on the elevated leg. He also had one of his arms in a cast and a bandage wrapped around his head. Amber didn't know he had head injuries or broken ribs, which she assumed by those places being bandaged, when his mom called and didn't really expect to see it when she walked in the room.   12

"Joscelin?" Amber said, as if she couldn't believe it was him.13
