Goddess of the Lily

Once there was a Goddess who strolled through the Garden in the early morning dew.  Upon tiring she rested herself on the Great Rock under the Old Oak in the center of the Garden to ponder the existence of love.  For you see, Goddess had a great capacity to give and to receive love, but she had no one with whom to share her heart, her Love.1

As silence rolled through the garden and Goddess searched the depths of her soul for meaning and purpose, unbeknownst to her, a lone Lily was watching this rare beauty from behind the rock.  As Goddess remained deep in thought and the Garden slowly came to life in the early morning hours, Lily remained concealed in her hiding place, undetected; unnoticed.  2

You see, Lily had been trampled many times before.  Her delicate bloom had been harshly plucked and destroyed so often that she learned to stay hidden in the shadows, never revealing her true beauty; her Love.  There had been a time when Lily would cast her petals to the sun for all to see and show her glory, but after suffering disease and cruelty from passersby and the harsh elements, Lily finally learned to hold her soft, delicate petals close and wrap her leaves around her stem as a protection from further harm. 3

Eventually, Lily just stayed hidden behind the rock, out of view from anyone strolling in the Garden, until Goddess.  Lily watched Goddess intently from her hiding place, knowing better than to reveal her presence.  But as Goddess continued to stay and sit quietly, curiosity got the better of Lily, so she peeked ever so slightly from her hiding place.4

What Lily saw as she slowly tipped her pale petals around the edge of the Great Rock moved her with great compassion.  There were tears on the face of Goddess.  How could such beauty be in such pain?  What could possibly hurt such a delicate creature so much that would cause her to want to be alone in this Garden and not be around others? Why would she not want to display her beauty?  Lily could not understand why Goddess was here, but mostly, could not understand why she was suffering alone.  Lily hurt to see the tears fall from this creature of such beauty and grace.  5

Lily had already experienced such pain in her time, dare she try again? Dare she attempt to reach out and console this vision of loveliness?  Lily withdrew into her shadow of safety to ponder her dilemma as Goddess wept bitter tears.  Then almost without another thought, Lily found herself straining to lean forward and gently stroke the hand of Goddess.  Feather light her petals were upon the skin of this amazing beauty, Lily wasn’t even sure that she had touched her, and yet, Goddess jumped as if stabbed completely through with a dagger.6

Lily shrank back into her shadow, expecting the worst.  She knew what was next, as it had happened so many times before.  A cruel word of ridicule for the misshapen Lily, or a foot to trample what was perceived by the one there as a weed, or even worse, to be plucked from her beautiful home only to have her delicate bloom perish in a glass of murky water.  She worked so hard to offer each bloom for the Garden. Oh how it hurt to have them plucked.7

But, as Lily waited, and waited, and held her petals with her delicate leaves, nothing happened.  No smacks, no cruel words, no painful plucking.  Slowly, Lily unfurled herself from her leaves and lifted her petals to see what Goddess was doing.  There was no way to prepare Lily for this encounter of her precious, pain-filled lifetime.  Goddess was smiling at her through her tear-stained eyes.  OH! Dare she hope? Dare she dream? Lily slowly raised her petals a little higher, an offering of friendship, yet not too high that she could quickly retrieve them if a cruel hand began to come her way.  But, there was no cruelness in the face of Goddess.  Only Love shone from this Beautiful One.8

Lily raised her petals more and once again gently stroked the tender flesh of the hand of Goddess.  Goddess’s eyes sparkled as new tears formed, but the smile that accompanied them were obvious to Lily, that they were tears of joy.  Lily strained for all she was worth to reach this creature of loveliness, but could reach no further, and finally sank back in despair.  She knew it, it was too good to be true.  Lily felt hopelessness wash over her once again as she withdrew back into the shadows to be alone and leave Goddess to her thoughts.9

Just as Lily hung her head, she felt a gentle stroke on her petals.  What a wondrous sensation!  She had never felt such a fantastic feeling before and when she looked, Goddess had turned her body so she could reach Lily and sit next to her.  Goddess reached down and lovingly stroked Lily’s petals and leaves, cooing to her that she was the loveliest of all the flowers in the garden.  Not because of her beauty alone, but because of her gentleness and Love.  Now it was Lily’s turn to weep with joy at this display of love and affection.  She had never known kindness before.10

As the two new friends sat together in the Garden, there at the Great Rock, they loved on each other; Goddess stroking Lily’s petals and Lily, gently brushing against the legs of Goddess.  Goddess marveled at the silkiness of Lily’s lush petals as she lovingly stroked each one in turn.  Goddess became almost intoxicated with Lily’s fragrance as she sat and inhaled deeply of her delicate friend.11

Lily flourished under the gentle and graceful fingers of Goddess, enjoying each tender caress on her pale petals that had been hidden away from the rest of the Garden for so long.  She was even a bit self-conscious to have such a vision of beauty as Goddess touching her, as some of her petals had grown back deformed from the years of abuse and neglect.  She was not the most beautiful flower in the Garden, but Oh! How she loved Goddess.12

As the hours passed, these two spoke not a word, as how could a Goddess and a Lily exchange words? But theirs was a Friendship that bonded instantly and they knew that words were not necessary.  They seemed to know what the other was in need of.  Goddess had someone to Love and Lily, she had someone to love her.  Each had their deepest needs fulfilled that day as they sat, loving each other, healing each other, fulfilling each other.13

And as twilight approached, Goddess softly bade Lily farewell, promising that she would return on the morning’s dawn, and somehow, Lily knew this was a Goddess she could believe in.  And for the first time in their lives, they both slept peacefully, knowing there was someone in the world that cared deeply and called them Friend.14

    Exquisite!

Lily, I am so touched by the gentle sweet beauty of your story, such a loveliness in their friendship, a comfort and a "knowing" without words, each saw the beauty in one another, Lily had so much compassion for the Goddess and the Goddess saw such strength and beauty in the gentle flower.... just an amazing story, really my sweet friend, excellent! All the best, Annie

What a beautiful story, Lil...you've done well, my Friend...I agree with the other comments; I can easily see this as a fairy tale worthy of sitting beside The Brothers Grimm, Mother Goose, & Hans Christian Anderson stories...Your Friend must be overcome with tears at the thought of your feeling so deeply, let alone at the thought of your writing of it in such a graceful & loving manner...Brava, O Delicate One...
