Forever yours: part 20

“I need to speak to Dr. Reiner immediately.” Someone was demanding on the phone to the hospital receptionist.1

“Wait a second sir.” The girl said as she transferred the call to someone else.2

As soon as a male voice said hello the person on the other end of the phone said in a rush “Dr. Reiner, I need to know what’s happening right now to Victor. What’s happening to him? God, he’s in pain.” The person talking on the other end seemed to be in tears.3

“Tyler? Am I speaking to Tyler Demyan?” The man asked.4

There was a long pause before the voice replied in confusion “Who are you? I wanted to talk to Dr. Reiner”5

“So, Dr. Leyla was right after all. What was required was just a little push to make you come to us begging. Dr. Reiner passed away two days ago. You might want to stop the death count Tyler.” The voice said sagaciously. 6

“What have you done to Victor?” Ty’s voice rose. “Stop it now.”7

“Calm down Tyler. It’s just a low dose of morphine. It wouldn’t become seriously lethal in less than an hour. He might be in a coma in thirty minutes though, assuming he had remained calm from when we left him. You might want to hand yourself in to us if you want him alive.” The voice said smugly. 8

“You lying bastard. He is already in a coma. I know it. I feel it. Who ever the hell you are, you ought to know that your only chance of ever getting me back is dependant on Victor’s coming out of this alive.” Ty said coldly.9

“Hm. He won’t die. We’ve got the best doctors here.” The voice replied.10

“I also saw what you did with my vaccine on the newspaper. I want them back. I assume you have the injections I gave to Dr. Reiner as well.” Ty said.11

“Are we at the stage of making demands?” He asked.12

“I will hand myself only if you agree to certain things regarding the safety of Victor.” Ty said.13

“Fine. We’ll give all the injections and we’ll make sure Victor doesn’t die. When are you handing yourself in?” The man asked.14

“I’ll see you in the hospital in three hours if Victor’s condition improves.” Ty said.15

“Asking for Victor’s condition to improve is a bit of a stretch now. We can assure his condition would be stable but no more.” The man said.16

“By stable you better make sure his chances of survival are more than 50% or I am not coming.” Ty said with false brevity.17

“You’ll not come, is it? Boy, I can hear how desperate you are to see him right now. So let’s cut on the demands shall we? You are really in no position to demand but because we don’t really want Victor Fitzhugh’s death on our hands we’d be happy to ensure his condition remains stable until you hand yourself in.” The voice said.18

Ty looked at the phone wide eyed as the man on the other end of the phone hung up. For a while he just sat there, stunned. He had no idea how Victor was right now but he could feel the weakening of his mind’s link with Victor, every passing minute. He wanted to dash into the hospital. But he knew better. The moment he goes inside the hospital they would stop treating Victor and capture him. There was nothing scarier for him than getting captured by them again. He had been having bad nightmares for months about their testing. He had always prayed that what he was seeing was not his future. But, he was starting to think it was his future now. 20

Then there was his little baby. He looked at Evan lying in his crib, his eyes following the stars in the wind chime Ty had put on the roof of the crib. As soon as Ty neared the crib and the baby noticed him, he started gurgling and waving his hands enthusiastically at him. Ty smiled and pulled the baby up into his arms. He looked at him, trying to memorise his cherubic little face with the huge blue eyes, the little red lips and the soft, whitish blonde hair that stood up on end. He looked so much like Victor that it was heart wrenching to even look at him, knowing he might never see him again.21

But he knew what he had to do to ensure the baby’s safety. He loathed imagining his little baby in the hands of scientists who would see him as nothing more than a test subject. He started putting warmer clothes on him, all the while looking at his face wondering if he would ever know how much he loved him. He didn’t waste time as he hailed a cab and gave the address to which he was going to the driver.22

It was more than an hour’s ride to the mansion. Ty looked at the big mansion with dread as he got out of the cab and introduced himself to the guard behind the gates. The guard looked at him warily and then at the little baby tucked in among blankets, before he opened the gate for him. It was very cold outside and there was a slight drizzle. The guard took him inside the house and handed him over to the butler who took him into the study of Evelyn David Fitzhugh. 23

He remembered the first time he had come to the house, three years ago with Victor. He had been standing outside this same study when Victor had told his grandmother that he was gay and that he had been dating Ty for seven years. Ty still remembered how disastrous the meeting went. Evelyn Fitzhugh had insulted him and called him a “gold digger” when she hadn’t even met him. 24

That had been the night his grandmother disowned him. Ty remembered how hurt he had felt as Victor’s grandmother berated on and on about what a low life she thought he was. He had felt such relief when Victor had stood up to his grandmother and defended him. Even now he felt like Victor would come in any moment looking furious and drag him out of there saying “They don’t deserve to even be in your presence, let’s go Ty.”25
