Anton wasn’t in the mood. “Look I can do without the attitude for today. I just came down from Costa del Sol. I thought you may be there.” Jay rubbed his forehead, feeling weary of all this shit. “Look this is a beautiful country so I took it upon myself to have a bigger look around it.” Anton didn’t look convinced. “I would say you were trying to give me the slip.” Jay tutted, “well I wasn’t going to but, eh, I ran out of reasons why I shouldn’t.” Anton chose to ignore his obnoxiousness. “Listen have you traced the files? Have you gotten any clues?” Jay nodded. “They’re definitely in Spain. I can tell by the number. They were from the same bank so it’s obvious. Look they’re smart. They keep their databases hidden so I couldn’t hack into that to trace any further. I guess they learned their lesson from before.” Jay breathed. It wasn’t easy having to sit up night after night trying to search every database possible to find certain links. “Then a friend faxed me through the bank and company documents of the other companies so I tried that. I’ve made this list.....see if you recognise any of the names.”711
Jay paused to rub his wary eyes. He had truly enough of this shit but he knew it wouldn’t be the end of it. “Anyway, I just traced the signal of the computer. It’s Spain all right, except for the last one. I couldn’t trace the last one.” Anton looked at the list, he recognised them all. The boy was right, they were all in Spain. “I know all of these places. I knew all of these places because I’ve been there myself. So well, you’ve just wasted your time,” he mentioned casually as if hoping to get off the hook. “And you didn’t think to mention a fucking thing!” Jay snapped irritably. He had truly had enough of this shit, he just wanted to be done with it and move on. 722
Anton looked particularly guilty. “It must have slipped my mind, listen, call this number. I want you to come and stay with me for a while. Tell your girlfriend you have to leave her. Don’t call her, just text her. I don’t think she would appreciate being infected with the sound of your voice knowing you won’t physically be there.” This really riled Jay intensely. “Man, one thing you’ve got to learn not to do is tell me how to live my life,” he snapped. “I mean who the fuck are you anyway, I love my girlfriend all right, she’s everything to me and if I want to call her I’m gonna fucking call her OK, later.” Jay said ‘later’ rather tersely. Yet, thinking back on it once he hung up, he realised he probably had a point. The reason Jay hadn’t told Adi half the things he probably should of was to protect her, but also, inwardly, he knew it was also due to a fear of rejection on her part. 733
During a near night swim in August, Jay and Adi were swimming in the sparkling-blue ocean off the rocky hilltops of Costa del Sol where Jay had rented an apartment for a time. Whilst frolicking happily in the water a stranger swam up to them asking how they were. “Fine thanks,” Jay muttered before ushering Adi off through the waves. Adi basked in his embrace while frolicking around happily. The sun set magnificently beyond the caved-in beach beneath the sharp rocks. Jay and Adi found it the most magical site. 744
Yet, he kept following them, and when Jay and Adi returned to the back of the apartment, Adi was forced against the wall with a gun to her head. Jay didn’t freak. He was more streetwise than that. “What do you think you’re doing?” he asked forcefully. “We know what you’re doing here, in Spain.” Adi whimpered softly. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.” Jay, however, being more streetwise was objective to any denial or word said about the whole situation they were in. “Adi, babe just keep quiet, will you?” he said firmly, eyeing the gun-loaded bully. Jay was pretending to be rational, calm and collected but he was determined it would work in his favour. “Look, just put the gun down,” he said forcefully, gesturing downwards for effect. The gun was lowered a little. 755
Suddenly a less than even tempered Jay kicked the stranger in his crotch then groin, causing him to drop the gun whilst doubling up in pain. He winced excessively. Jay promptly led Adi through to the apartment. ‘God that shook me up, she said as Jay locked the door behind them. “Are you OK?” he asked worriedly. “Yes, I’m fine....I will be. I wonder what Kat would make of it.” Jay got out vodka from the fridge for them both. “She doesn’t have to know does she? She’d freak.” Adi sighed. “Jay how long is this all going to last.” Adi asked, feeling fed up with the hiding. She wanted to go back to do something a bit more intellectual. Yet, she had fun over the past weeks helping Jay and Kat film and produce the footage of Spain. Jay looked sympathetic as he drew her near to him, holding both vodkas. “We’ll go back home soon, I promise,” he soothed, drawing her near her. 766
The fond embrace was abruptly ended when a gun shot was fired. “Shit,” Jay swore. Adi screamed, they both ran for the stairwell and descended it rapidly. “Fuck he’s after us again,” Jay gasped, fiddling with his phone as the pair hid behind the wall, next to the door exiting the building. “OK,” Jay took a breath in, After three I’ll smash this door open and we make a run for it, OK?” Adi nodded. “OK.” 777
“One, two, three.” Jay, as he said he would, kicked the door down and the two made a run for it. The bullets from the gun smashed the windows, Jay and Adi ran for their lives round a back alley. They stayed there for a few seconds, suddenly Jay saw a car stopping off the alley. Its passenger window came down, it was Kat. “Guys, hop in!” she yelled. Jay and Adi raced towards the car and hopped in. A dark looking person was driving the car. “Hey cous, who’s the guy?” Jay queried. Kat didn’t get too answer the question as two bullets shot through the back window of the car. The vehicle swerved round the corner and took off with vertigo towards and along the appearing highway. “Man, that was lucky,” Jay breathed. Adi had to agree. 788

It was late October. Rain began pouring down the terrace, drenching the stylish, expensive pool-lounges. Kat wished she could go to Australia right now. It was gorgeous and warm there. All the sun you could possibly get. Looking at the window she mused on what Dan would have thought had they gone together. It was weird but she missed him more than ever now she was with Nairo. Not that she didn’t love him but it was wondering what could have been. Adi suddenly stormed in. “Jay, where’s Jay?” she asked. Kat, putting down her magazine, gave her a note her cousin gave her just moments ago. “He said he’d gone out to see Al.” Kat shook her head, confirming the lie. “He wanted me to give you this note so he would minimise the distress. Adi opened it. 8010

There are things that I can’t really explain to you nor does any specific detail really matter. I just have to go for a while to a person who has offered to help me and I will be staying with them. I have met this person before, twice. I don’t know how this would lead me, or whether I’ve taken a risk far too great but it’s one I’ve decided I’m willing to take. I won’t be coming back to your sister’s for a while, several weeks even. I’m truly sorry of the pain this separation will cause and I want you to know it’s causing me pain too. I promise though, on my life, that I will return to you and then we will make plans about our future together. Please bear with me on this.... I love you more than anything. Take good care of yourself. 8212

PS: Don’t call me. I will call you, though it won’t be for several days or even weeks.....we have to just resort to texting for communication instead otherwise Big Brother (who else?) will possibly intercept my calls to you and discover where you are. That is a risk however I am not willing to take. 8414
Tears from Adi’s face trickled onto the piece of paper. “I can’t believe it,” she whispered. Kat came over to comfort her. “He’s gone,” Adi whimpered in complete disbelief. The villa’s large living area seemed all the more empty. Yet, for some reason it seemed less empty when Kat held her affectionately. “What did he say to you?” she asked, looking up at her best friend. Kat was silent for a moment. “He basically just said he had to go, had a carry bag with him, gave me the note and left,” Kat explained. Ádi wasn’t buying it. “Well why did he have to go? Did he mention anything to you about that?”she asked desperately, wondering back to her and Jay’s bedroom down in the cellar.8515
She liked the fact it was there, it was spacious, comfortable and private and they could lock people out completely. Adi wandered, as she found no messages from checking her phone, if this is what Jay was doing: locking himself away from everyone. 8616

Adi had been a wreck since Jay had gone. Every night after her shift she would sit on the beach, wondering where the time went, how it came to this. How could Jay do this to her? Did he love her? Did she mean anything to him? Even Costa del Sol’s buzzing by-the-sea nightlife couldn’t seem to ignite her burnt out spirit. She knew only one thing would help her to settle this once and for all......asking Jay to come back. As she stood at the end of her bed, leaning on the side of it she fiddled with her phone. She thought of texting him to come back, she thought of ignoring his request not to on the note and calling him, asking, begging for him to return. 8818

This was all she sent in the text. She didn’t feel the need to write anything else. Adi thought that if she did, he would just get sick and tired of hearing the same old things over again. She just missed him like crazy. Lara noticed this at breakfast this morning before she and Kat set off for their shift. “Hey Adi, what’s up. I thought you enjoyed working there.” Adi shrugged. “I’m missing Jay I guess.” Lara understood. He had been gone for nearly two months. It was about time Adi got back to London. “Hey Adi, have you heard from Rite yet?” Adi shook her head, trying to lift her shattered head off the table. Kat, luckily was in on what happened and decided to tell Adi’s sister the truth. 9222
“OK, well Adi kind of got the third degree from another friend saying that Rite’s gone AWOL and both she and her need to be back by January 4th in order to sign off on the contract agreement otherwise they’d both be sued by the bastard and will be subpoenaed by the court.” Adi began to break down in tears. If only Dewson hadn’t sold the thing off, he would have to deal with him, which seemed now a irresistible option. Kat put a comforting hand on her friend’s back. “It’s OK baby he’ll be back, I promise.” Adi shook her head, “you don’t know that,” she replied softly. Lara decided it was her turn to speak. “Listen sis I know I’ve had my doubts about him in the past but he really seemed to take a shine to you and for what it’s worth I really believe he’ll come back. I don’t think he would go off back to LA without you.” These words encouraged Adi but she still wasn’t any happier.9323
Usually Adi didn’t resort to heavy drinking when depressed but she was now. Depressed and confused. She hated feeling confused more than feeling down. In fact if anything got her down in particular it was feeling confused. She rummaged through the wooden oak cabinet to try and find the strongest vodka. Kat, luckily caught her at it whilst walking past. “Adi what are you doing? Do you think drinking yourself stupid is going to bring Jay back?” Adi gave her an shrug of indifference before downing a swig of vodka from the bottle. “Quite frankly Kat I don’t really care either way to be honest. I’m going back to London. I’m finishing with him. There is no way in hell that if he really cared for me that much he’d put me through this hell.” These words alarmed Kat somewhat. “Oh no you are not breaking my cousin’s heart and if you do you’ll have me to deal with OK same goes for him if he doesn’t fucking return.” “What’s the point in waiting around hey if he doesn’t? I’m going back to London and he can fuck off back to LA for all I care.” Adi said spitefully. Glugging back more drink she got up and walked back to the bedroom she and Jay had been sharing. She began packing her bags when Kat charged in, ready to hash it out. Adi didn’t mind that. “You do not want to be doing this, I swear if you break his heart I will seriously kill you,” she warned her. Kat wasn’t going to put up with either of them being stupid. Adi, all the same, stopped right in her tracks at the harshness of it all. 9424
“He’s breaking mine! He’s doing my head in being away like this. My bed’s just so cold at night and every day I miss him more. I can’t bear what he’s doing to me!” Kat breathed. “I know,” she admitted softly. “I know, look let’s just go to work today, perhaps try your best to forget about it for now and I promise I will do something. I don’t know what exactly.....” Adi couldn’t help but interrupt. “What exactly do you plan to do? Call Damien. Babe I’ve called him back and talked about it. He told me I had to come back, I said I had to wait ‘till Jay gets back to my sisters and he then said he’d try and get a hold of Rite again and see if she can......” Adi had to interrupt again. 9525
“Hey look I’ve got a text from Damien he said that sorry to alarm me and that he saw Rite back at my apartment and now what’s left for me to do is sign off. Oh well fuck it, it’s not ‘till January 4th anyway.” Kat rolled her eyes. “Precisely my point, now let’s get off to work.....oh shit you can’t go like that. I’ll call, tell you’ve been throwing up or something.” Adi was thankful for Kat’s suggestion. She didn’t much feel like going to work that day. In fact every day had been a drama. It was like she was missing a part of herself and she didn’t know whether it would return. She found herself so desperately lonely for Jay. “You know, I have to give you 10 Euros if he comes back and we end making love,” Adi called out to Kat, collapsing on the sofa. 9626
“Deal,” Kat replied. “And if he doesn’t, then you have to give me 10 Euros.” 9727
“Ooh, I like a good wager,” Adi said half-heartedly. Lying back on the couch as she played with her phone, thinking of dialling him. She felt like going for the whisky instead, perhaps it would be more soothing yet she resisted. She knew she had to reach a limit before she could go too far. Yet contemplating on how much she didn’t care anyway what happened. Adi flipped open the bottle. She poured herself some vodka into a glass and sipped it down her feeling her head fuzz before laying back, staring into space. 9828

Adi leant against a hard wall, trying to re-catch her breath. The thing was she kept touching her stomach. She was pregnant. She wasn’t sure if she had told Jay this yet. He was missing anyway and she needed to find him desperately. However as she looked for Jay she found it hopeless. She turned around wandering which direction she could go. She then heard a grunt of pain, as if someone had been whacked severely. She followed the noise until she saw the horror. The horror the dream really brought out. It was Jay lying in a blooded heap after clearly taking beating after beating. “Oh my god!” she felt herself cry. “NOOOOO!” She rushed to Jay, who was unconscious. “Wake up, Jay please get up,” she began to sob. “Oh god no!”she whispered, barely managing to sound out the words. He was clearly out. She tried to feel his pulse, she could barely make one out.10030
She called the Ambulance. “Come on, come on,” she hissed under her breath. As she sat there the rain began to pour down on her. She took off her jacket and put it over Jay’s body to keep it warm. She thought he might stand a better chance. “Baby don’t leave me, please don’t leave me,” she began sobbing all the more feeling the wet and cold of the rain drops pouring down on her. Adi heard the ambulance siren wailed as it neared the location surrounded by modern office buildings. However, Jay began to stir. “Jay,” Adi spoke as his eyes fluttered. Yet they fluttered for nearly a second as the last strength he had in him made him all the more weak. Adi realised the light leaving Jay’s eyes as they shut, his body and soul doing the same. His now heartbroken widow let out an intense scream of sheer pain, of great despair, of overwhelming sorrow only to wake up to realise it was just a dream and she was back in her sister’s villa with Jay nowhere in sight. 1
