Prologue:1
"Hey, Amanda! Guess where I'm going tomorrow!" Stacie yelled across the house. Amanda, still in bed, rolled over and looked at her clock. Ten in the morning! How could she come over so early? "Hey, wake up sleepy head. We have to go shopping." Stacie now said from the doorway. That got Amanda up-anything shopping was always good for her; even if it was at ten. She got up from bed and went to her desk to find her hairbrush. As she was brushing her hair out of its many tangles, she asked Stacie, "So. Where ARE you going tomorrow?"Stacie giggled. "You know how I like Defon, right? Well, he kind of asked me out..." Amanda shrieked with delight."Shut up! Do you want to wake up your dad?" Amanda looked at Stacie, and admitted that she was right. If she woke her father, she would get in huge trouble. He works at night, so he sleeps during the day-and he needs every ounce of sleep he could get. Amanda's dad was such a grouch if he hadn't had at least ten hours.2
Stacie, after seeing Amanda shake her head, continued. "It's not really a date, date-but he did invite me to go somewhere with him. He also said you could come, too." Amanda walked over to Stacie and said, "Oh really?", as she was pushing her out the door. Stacie went out, and the door closed; Amanda still in her room. As she got dressed, Stacie told her all about the event through the door. She was finishing up as the door opened. "Auditions? You know I get really nervous." Amanda said, now fully dressed. Stacie pushed her way back into the room and flopped on her best friend's bed. "Please. For me??!!! And you totally have to get over your self-esteem issues. Who cares if you are a little over weight? You are beautiful!" Amanda was about to protest that, well, she was ugly, Stacie cut her off. "Don't you dare say it! If you do, I'll steal your favorite shoes for a week." Amanda stayed quiet, and thought how much easier it would be if she were Stacie.3
Stacie was as thin as a skinny twig. She was about five feet seven, with flowing long blonde hair. Her eyes were a beautiful color of brown, and her face had not one imperfection about it. Stacie never had a problem changing in front of people. But she was a very nice, caring, and loyal friend. She always was late for gym, waiting for Amanda to change in a bathroom stall, and even if Amanda told her to get to class, she waited for her anyway. And it was a good thing they always had gym last period, because Amanda never took a shower. She was scared to death to take a shower with other people-even if they were only girls. But those girls and herself had one difference. Amanda was fat. She was one hundred pounds overweight, and she had stretch marks everywhere. Her breasts, her stomache, her thighs. How could she let everyone see her like that? Now, she would be pretty if she was a bit skinnier. She had wonderful brown hair, and a shade of green eyes no one had ever seen before in a person. She was a little shorter than Stacie, and had a few problem spots on her face that got acne when it was that time of the month, but other than that, her skin was perfect. But right now, when Amanda looked in a mirror, all she ever saw was ugliness. Even Stacie couldn't change her thinking.4
Amanda looked at Stacie, and then replied, "Fine. I'll go with you, but just to make sure Defon doesn't try anything." Stacie grinned and hugged Amanda. "Okay. Let's go shopping now!"5
