Within the wavering abyss, a lone candle, barely flickering, sat on a table before him among numerous cardboard boxes, their puzzle pieces scattered on the floor. His face could not be seen - if he had one, it could not have been said. Reaching down past his chair, he plucked up a piece and brought it into the candle's glow.1
