Diffident

I've had many nicknames over the years, some flattering some not so much. This one may not seem to be but it is the best single word to ever describe me. I'm far from self confident and am fairly shy. (it may seem on SW I'm not but in real life I am) I reserve myself to only when action is truly needed. As an engineer it seemed it help me fit in perfectly with other geeks of similar attitudes. I actually believe it's good to be a bit diffident as it means I'm not forcing my will onto others nor am I being too proud. I am only me.

You should be confident about yourself, but not to the point of bragging. From your explination I wouldn't say that you are diffident exactly, just shy or... well kind of normal. Everyone tries to take shelter in something because everyone is afraid and everyone thinks that someone is better than themselves. GReat descriptive word
