She sat there, guilt weighing her down into the plush chair. She sipped her mocha frappuchino, hoping it would lighten her spirit, clear her mind, but knowing all the while that it would only make her heavier, slower, sadder. Sitting there, in her usual dimly lit corner of the Starbucks café, she placed her overpriced, overcalorienated beverage down on the small cherry table beside her. The cup plunked down harder that she’d meant for it to, punctuating her sigh of annoyed helplessness. Her newly purchased sweat suit felt tighter, more uncomfortable, than in had felt in the Sears dressing room where she’d first tried it on, telling herself that this time would be different. Yes, this time she would march right up to that gym. She would push past those once so intimidating double doors in a whoosh of defiant confidence. She would stomp onto that treadmill, press the on button and then… In all honesty she hadn’t even gotten past the front door, as the mere thought of all those fit onlookers staring her down with disdainful eyes had frightened her away, back into the Starbucks café, where she could escape their judgement, where she could hide from everyone, everyone but herself.

This is so simple and yet you describe it with such fierce feeling. I like that you show the little challenge, and you take a realistic stance. She doesn't win, she has to learn, but she can't. Very realistic and I like it a lot. Very good descriptions and you really had me going on this one. Amazing for such a short piece. Good luck, thanks for entering, and I'm sorry it's taken me so long to comment. (:
