Trouble in the Schoolyard

today I saw him and he saw me1

begins this school yard history of tales2

two unlike peoples as Hippolyta and the Prince of Wales3

Yet their we stood waiting4

The wait did not last long5

Raging wars of boy-girl attacks danced around the two of us unceasingly6

We had tried to calm the violence many times before7

But we were not strong enough to quench the flames that bore in our friends’ heart8

We stood there waiting knowing what to do, but unsure if we would risk it9

It would mean our sides salvations10

Sacrificing or mutual interest to please the greater public11

In hopes that one day things would be different12

He took the first step, 13

I took the second14

And for the last together15

We crossed into our respective lines and never looked back16

So now we are enemies once more17

Boy ‘gainst Girl18

Red ‘gainst Blue19

The never ending cycle for power20

The days will go by as normal21

Dirty glance and furtive looks22

Continue to pass over rows of desks23

Until we can vent our frustrations during dodgeball24

The bodies fall, dragged to the sidelines25

Until at last we stand alone26

Facing the dilemma of whose side to take27

Rouge balls strike us both and we scowl as we’re banished to the bench28

Maybe later when the dust has cleared29

And the orange rubber is gone30

We will find each other31

Outside the battlefield32

He and I33

Will let go of our ties and be allies again34

And nurture the torn bond35

Between we as two leaders36

But until then we steal37

Quick smiles and borrowed pencils38

And together hope for the future39

A day when friendship can cross the lines of gender and bloom.40
