The Deals We Made (Chapter 3)

“My dad won’t be back till next Friday,” He said as he picked up the key from under the welcome mat and unlocked the door. “Me and you needa talk about some stuff without any interruptions. So we’re gonna be chillen here for a little while.” We walked inside and he went into the kitchen. I stayed in the living room and sat on the leather couch.2

“Well how long is a little while?” I asked. I couldn’t stay too long, my parents would go crazy. He didn’t answer my question until he came back to the living room. He sat in the black reclining chair by window with a soda.  3

“I dunno...maybe a few days.” He said. Was he crazy? My parents would kill us both.4

“I can’t, Mike. My parents won-” 5

“I don’t care about them right now. Call them and tell them you’re stayen at one of your friend’s houses. You’re staying here, we got shit to take care of.” The way he said that scared me. I didn’t know how to respond to that, so I didn’t say anything.6

“Did you hear me?” he asked.7

"Yeah...I heard ya...” I replied. I was getting nervous, and he was getting angry.8

“Are you getting smart with me?” He shot me a threatening look.9

“No...I’m not....I didn’t mean it like that.” I stammered.10

“Yeah, okay, whatever.” That wasn’t like him, to just let it go like that. I shrugged it off as well, not wanting him to get angrier. We sat there and watch television for a little while, although I didn’t really pay attention. I sat there, thinking about what I was going to tell my parents. I wondered what was so important that he needed me to be here for a few days. I also wanted to know why he hadn’t started talking about it yet. About a half hour into a movie, Mike simply turned the tv off.11

“Call your parents.” He said, staring at the blank television. 12

“And tell them what?” I asked, still unsure if he really wanted me here a few days.13

“I told you already! What are you, stupid?” he yelled. “Tell them you’ll be at your friends house a few days to think things through!” Without saying a word to him, I  got up and walked to the kitchen to grab the phone. I dialed the number and it just kept ringing until I got my answering machine.14

“Hello, You’ve reached the Napals. We’re not home right now, so leave a message and we’ll call you back! Beeeeeeeeeep.”15

“Hey Ma, it’s me. I’m staying over my friend Lisa’s for the weekend. Don’t flip, I just needed to get outa the house for a bit. I’ll try to call you later. Love ya. Bye.” I hung up and walked back to the living room and sat down on the couch again. 16

Mike was still sitting in his chair, not saying a word. I didn’t know if I should say anything, so I just sat there quietly, looking around the room observing things. There was a beautiful painting on the wall of a girl riding a white horse with a gorgeous mane. The girl had the biggest smile and looked like she was having the time of her life. Like at that point in time, her life was perfect. Which made me wish mine was at least a little better than what it was. We remained silent for at least 5 minutes before Mike broke the silence.17

“I’m goin to get another soda, I’ll be right back.” he said. From the kitchen he stated “So me and Willie were talking before everything else happened,”  When he came back into the living room he glared at me for a brief moment. He sat down with this look of death on his face. I could see the anger in his eyes. “So...where were you last Saturday night?”18
