peanuts and brittle

Why do they always have to mix two things that are successful on their own together? Two things that to the untrained person would seem odd?1

I like my life. I love my friends. Like everyone else in the world I kind of wish that things were a little different in some aspects of my life, but other than that I am ok.2

Ok until the phone call that I got from my mother today. I do not know if it is the noose in the form of divorce hanging over her head that makes her want to try and "hook" he up with any random single guy she finds, but I am finding it increasingly difficult to tell her no. For being single for two years does not seem that big of a deal to me, to my mother I am either a lesbian, or the saddest person she has ever met. She looks at me not longer as her daughter, but as the cow that no one else wanted to buy. All of the other cows have been sold, and eventhough I am completely content grazing in the pasture of life waiting for someone to come to me, she is not happy. So she has made it her misson in life to try and find me someone. Not a good someone, nice someone, or even a stable someone, just someone.3

So she calls me this morning to ask me what I was doing this friday (Thank goodness for my friends and project improv). She never calls unless she needs money, advice, or has found another "perfect guy" for me. 4

"This one is different honey. He has a good head on his shoulders, no criminal record, and he has a steady job. He is 25 yrs old and has never been married"5

Sounds ok so far, so I ask:6

"what does he do?"7

After a long pause she clears her throat and says: 8

"Well you have to keep an open mind about things honey."9

"Mom......What does he do??"10

"Honey...."11

"Mom....."12

"He's in seminary school."13

A tiny laugh tries to escape my throat, but I keep it contained:14

"I don't think we would have anything in common. Thank you mom, but I don't think so."15

That was it? I was thinking she could do better than that. The first one she tried to "hook" me up with was a rapper. He had no job, no car, no vision of any sort of future for himself, but he was an artist. 16

Wow, thanks mom. 17

I am starting to eat peanut butter sandwiches.18

No jelly, just peanut butter.19

I am trying to appreciate the peanut butter for what it is and how it shines all by itself. Without the need of a jelly.
