I'm not going to bore you with a sob story, but growing up was hard for me. My dad was ill and this caused him to be moody and short-tempered. 1
I can't tell you how often I was told off for the slightest of things, but the punishments were sometimes extreme, whilst others hardly anything. He had a brain tumour, causing his moods and making him angry one moment, then sad, then even happy. 2
As an eight year old, things like that affect you without even realising it. Don't get me wrong, I love my dad and always will, he wasn't a nasty person at all, just ill.3
So I began to read. Reading was my only true escape from reality. It could transport me to magical worlds, or even out of space. I remember reading The Hobbit. That was my first long book that I ever read, and I still love it to this day. After The Hobbit came the LOTR trilogy..so yes as a nine year old I read them. Admittedly it was hard going and I may have skipped alot! I've since read it throughly many times!4
J R R Tolkien has a wonderful talent of making everything seem so real, I was drawn into Middle Earth.5
When I was roughly fourteen, my love of writing began. We had been practising writing stories alot in year eight at school and I began to try my hand at it.6
I love writing and the feeling it gives me. Acomplishment. Something to be proud of, something for others to enjoy.7
My first big novel is now finished. It needs alot of editing and proof-reading however as I began it six years ago. It's about a wolf pack in Canada and a gift that one of them has. 8
So yes...from talking animals to dragons, werewolves, vampires and a few depressing poems...that's what you can find on my profile!!9
Reading and Writing are my ESCAPE from reality.

This is all true and close to my heart.

Thought I'd stop by...
As I read this nice and candid piece, something rung my little chime as I passed your mention of Tolkien's The Hobbit. Very important. When I worked at NBC network news in New York, a brilliant producer of mine named Frank Georg told me one evening that Tolkien, in The Hobbit "said it all!" Not having read the book at that time, of course I had no idea as to what Frank meant, but some years later, curious as to just what that may have been, I picked up the book and read it carefully. I wonder if YOU gleaned Tolkien's wise message?
Well, Shimmer, in case you have not, let me tell you what it was: When Gandalf was about to leave the little group as THEY were about to wend their way through the dark forest, he imparts some advice. And this advice should stand everyone in good stead as they make it through this life. The "advice" is:
KEEP YOUR SPIRITS UP...STICK TO THE PATH...HOPE FOR THE BEST...and with a little bit of luck, Smaug, (The Dragon) won't be waiting to bite you in the behind when you emerge!
(I paraphrase...but pretty much, that was it!) It took me a few years to get to it...but I thought, if you missed it...I might impart it to you now!
Best,
GA

Well done
You have taken the tough times and the emotions and channeled them into your writing ability - and you have done it well. You have come through these experiences well and you appear to be a well balanced and caring person. You may have issues to work through but then so do we all. You are a very strong person with a great talent for writing, keep it up.
PS I know where you are coming from re brain tumours and I know how tough it was for you. I now take inspiration from you and am dead proud to be listed amongst your friends

I understand about the ill father and the brain tumor my step dad had a brain tumor removed and went through 3 months of radiation treatment 5 days a week then died of pneumonia 5 days after his last radiation treatment. His lungs just collapsed. We hospitalized him with lower lobe pneumonia then not even a day later when to the whole lung... then both lungs. Within 3 days he was put on the vent. Not even a day later he was dead. So yeah that I do understand.
And I can understand how writing can be an escape. It can also be a release for feeling a lot of different emotions.
thanks for sharing this with us and thanks for entering it into my contest.
It is very well written and flows extremely well. You did a good job.

It's a horrible thing to go through, and I wouldnt wish it on anyone. It's nice to know however that other people have gone through the same thing and that I'm not alone!
