"So things are going okay, today?" Walter asked.1
"Yes, but I'm afraid Mrs. Boyd has been making more progress than I have this week." Dr. Cain answered. Walter's glance drifted toward the tiny girl sitting on edge of the bed, a food tray in front of her.2
"Well, that's fantastic, her medication has helped?..."3
"She has been drowsy, but no reactions." Dr. Cain with a hint of satisfaction in his voice.4
Katrina stared at the group, waiting for of them to end their conversation. Walter nodded with agreement to Dr. Cain and the fear subsided then. Breaking from her momentary trance, Katrina looked down at her plate. Lying next to the bowl was a bread knife. A sudden burst of energy filled Katrina's body and she took the knife in her right hand. 5
"Would you like a little time alone with her?" Mrs. Boyd's spirited voice chirped happily.6
"Of course, it's hard having her away from home," Walter answered, flashing a sparkling smile. "I just want what's best for her, as does her mother." The woman that had remained silent most of the visit, smiled faintly and adjusted her sunglasses.7
As Mrs. Boyd approached the food tray, Katrina slipped the knife into her sleeve and sat with her arms crossed. She gave Katrina a warm smile and picked up the tray.8
"Actually Mrs. Boyd, let me help you with that..." Walter said moving to take the tray, "Who knows, maybe I can get her to eat." 9
"Alright, that sounds fine." Walter took the bowl of soup from the tray and Mrs. Boyd left the room.10
As the door locked behind Dr. Cain, silence remained. Katrina watched her mother with a mixture of undying love and hatred. The sunglasses hid her tired, bloodshot eyes and from the way she walked toward the couch opposite the bed, she was perhaps still intoxicated. 11
Walter walked casually toward Katrina, still carrying the bowl of soup. A darkness came about him and Katrina sensed that he felt threatened. 12
"What have you done to yourself, Baby Kat? You know this isn't healthy...you're going to eat something," He said sweetly, then in a dark whisper, "You best do as your told, because I don't want to have to make you."13
"I've already eaten..." Katrina replied, starting down at the floor.14
"What was that?" He questioned, a hint of anger in his voice. 15
Katrina could feel the cold, harsh blade against her arm but replied, "I have already eaten, sir." A faint twitch in his left leg made Katrina make eye contact. His eyes burned into hers as he leaned close.16
