It had been a weekly ritual, two couples getting together every Saturday evening for dinner and drinks. They had met on vacation a few years previous and had become fast friends. Finding out that they lived in the same city made it possible for them to continue seeing each other. 1
Tonight, since one of the couples had just celebrated their thirty-fifth wedding anniversary, they were getting together for a special barbecue. 2

She walked into the kitchen from the back yard, pausing to wave at the man and woman sitting at the table on the far side of the patio. 4
“Do you need any help?” she asked the man standing at the counter. 5
He looked up at her with a smile. “Almost done.” 6
She watched as he went back to preparing the drinks. “I love you.” 7
“I love you, too,” he whispered back. He took a small bottle off the counter and poured the contents into two of the four tall glasses on the counter. “Pour the Mai-Tai’s into those two,” he nodded at the glasses. “We’ll have Pina Colada’s.” 8
“Good idea,” she said. “I don’t want to mix them up.” 9
“Neither do I.” He turned from the counter and looked into his love’s eyes. “Are you positive this is what you want?” 10
“More than anything.” She stuck a decorative straw in the Mai-Tai’s. “Are you sure this is going to work, my love?” 11
He nodded with a smile. “Once the medication takes effect and they fall asleep, we drive their bodies out to the cliffs and toss them both off. The tide will pull the bodies away, and we can be together forever.” He smiled at her. “Like we were meant to be.” 12
“Ever since I met you on that cruise, I knew I wanted to be with you,” she said. “It’s too hard to just have you once a week, and then have to pretend that you’re nothing more than a friend when I see you with your wife.” 13
“You go first,” he said in a quiet voice. “I’ll be right out.” 14
She hugged him as they laughed with giddy anticipation, and then she grabbed the tray of drinks and walked out of the kitchen to go sit on the patio with her husband and her best friend. 15
