Poppy Red

Poppy red to get across
The message written on the cross.
That those lying here are long dead.
The earth their final resting bed.1

That these brave, courageous souls
Gave up their lives,
Death by guns or gas or knives
Their bright flames burnt to coals.2

No one weeps at their graves
The men who so bravely fought
To save
The freedom now bought
With their lives.3

They are far from home
In a land and all alone.
Strangers tread upon the soil
Of men who should in royal
Colors be bedecked.4

They should wear crowns upon their heads
And us mortals should bow down
Upon the fields of red
Now changed to fields of brown.5

Poppy red to get across
The message written on the cross.
That those lying here are long dead.
The earth their final resting bed.6

I love the sing-song-y rhyme you had here.. it seems so simple, and yet, the "simple" words have a much deeper meaning.

Initially, I thought it was about Christianity, but your poem makes it clear that it may also be about the crosses atop the resting places of the dearly departed.

Your words helped me conjure ideas in my mind, a calm one though, not the usual melancholy I'd feel when I think of death or the dying.

Anyway, thank you for the read
