The's barn's got horses and hay. I'm glad for the hay 'cause it's a cold night being in the fall. I hear something...1
"Becky, get up and be quiet," I whisper.2
"What is . . .," I muffle her mouth on accoundt that she's got a big mouth. Got that from her pa. I hear an old couple bickering and light falls through the crack in the barn doors.3
"Miriam, I told you to put that feed up. Them horses'll be eating 'til Kingdom Come." An old man's voice cracks.4
"Oh, shut up chester. You want me to do too much. I wish you'd do it yerself instead of twiddlin' yer thumbs and drinkin' rum."5
Me and Becky hide ourselves behind a stack of hay.6
"Over there, man, there it is. Untouched."7
"Over where? I ain't seein' it."8
"By those haystacks."9
I wonder what they'll do if they find us. Maybe they'll hang us or feed us to the horses. My hands are still over Becky's mouth when...hiccup! Great. Thanks a lot Becky.10
"What was that?" said the woman.11
"I ain't heard nothing!"12
"You hard a' hearin'?"13
HICCUP!14
"Sounds like a cricket."15
"Sounds like a coon."16
"Alright. I'll go check it out."17
