Yet another random part of my story

So, what do you think made us like this? Katie thought as she lounged around ‘their’ room, I mean, not everyone can talk telepathically, right?
Right. April replied, We have a new kind of gene in us. That’s why that man kidnapped us, to study. Apparently we’re 90% human…
What! Only 90%! Katie interrupted, but we’re both 100% human! I can see that with my own two eyes!
That’s not what they say. This gene is also making us 10% avian as well. That’s why we can talk telepathically, and it’s also probably why we can hear stuff that’s really far away.
You mean that’s why I can sometimes see things in detail at the other side of the lab? Katie remarked silently, like, you know those ‘top secret’ test results the other day? Well, let’s just say…
What? Come on, tell me! What are they going to do to us? What were our results? April tensed as she though this, are they going to put us on extra training or something? I hate having to run for hours just so they can measure my heart rate.
At that both girls fell silent, well at least in their minds. April got up off her white bed, and joined Katie as they strolled around ‘their’ perfectly white beds. The disinfectant smell sent shivers down her spine, and for the first time, she noticed the tiny glass circle hidden in the ceiling.
“Sugar.” April’s first words in hours surprised the guard patrolling the hallway. She beckoned Katie over, then pointed at the little glass sphere, “They’ve been watching us the whole time. Probably listening in on all our conversations.” Well, at least the one’s we’ve had out loud.
For the sake of it, Katie said, “I wonder when our next test is going to be. I mean, we haven’t had one in, like, hours.” At least if they had more tests, she might be able to gain some more info.
Like about what was happening to April.
A few minutes later, a buzzer went off and he came to collect them. Well, at least April. He took almost no notice of Katie.
“I only come if Katie comes too.” She said, standing her ground, “From now on, we will not be separated. Understood?”
It’s like her voice was made of ice, Katie thought, and was rewarded by a grin from her new friend.
“Whatever.” He replied, “As long as you come, I don’t care what happens to her.”

Author notes

I don't know where I'm going to put this scene in the story, but at least I know it's near the end. I hope you liked it!
