Jaded: Chapter 8

1

But the excitement is evanescent. Silence. All that is heard on the long way home is silence. Everyone remains in complete disbelief that Jade would harm herself like this. Jade looks out her window at the pink blossoms swathing the greenish-brown branches on the trees beside the long road. Her sister stirs slowly in her seat. Then, there is more silence. Tired of it, Jade sits up to begin friendly conversation with her sister.2

"So, how has the school been without me? I bet they totally missed me," Jade announces sarcastically.3

"Yea," says Laura as she rolls her eyes. Though she loves her sister, the familiar eye roll is never forgotten.4

"Jade, darling? Please put up your window. You are making me unpleasantly chilly," remarks Jade's father.5

"Yes, sir."6

As Jade presses the button on the car door, she sees, in the distance, her home. She realizes how much she has missed the place, but at the same time she doesn't want to go back. As the bright red minivan pulls into the driveway, a murmur is heard from her mother, and then the car comes to a sudden halt at the foot of the garage.7

Suddenly, Laura reports "I'm going upstairs," and she runs through the unlocked from door to the staircase and is lost in a blur.8

Jade adds, "I think I'll join her."9

Upstairs, the two sit on their beds, magazines in hand, while pretending to not look at each other, though they catch each others' glances several times.10

Finally, Laura breaks in. "I'm sorry, okay? I didn't want you to do this."11

Jade, feeling a bit guilty, answers, "No, it wasn't you. It was..." Jade breaks off as she tries to think of what she could tell her sister. "School. Yea, it was that." She says this not only to clear her sister's conscious, but somehow hers, too.12

"Oh, okay. I guess I'll go then." Laura skips out of the room while whistling a joyous tune.13

After a few more minutes of pretend reading, Jade asks herself in a quiet whisper, "Why did I do it?"14

......15

"I'm fine! God! Will you let me leave if I promise not to do this again?" Jade screams belligerently at Dr. Randolph, the psychologist her parents sent her to.16

"I'm sorry you feel this way, but anger will not solve your problem. Now, take a deep breath and tell me why you hurt yourself," Dr. Randolph answers unperturbedly.17

Finally, Jade gives up and decides to cooperate. "It's because I'm tired of who I am and I hate being second to everyone else and I'm frustrated with school..." She breaks off and understands how crazy this guy must be. "...and I DON'T want to talk about it!" Jade says with sudden confidence.18

"And how does that make you feel?" comes Dr. Randolph pursuing curiosity.19

"Like I want to strangle you!" Jade says, only half jokingly. She picks herself up off the couch and turns towards the door. "Goodbye!" she says abruptly before exiting. Jade walks down the hallway and then turns her head back to see that she has left the door open. After several backward steps, she grasps the knob and jerks the door closed with apparent force.
